On current form, how is he worth in today’s market then?

I ❤️ Him.

I'd guess around £30m if he keeps this season up.

Fairly certain people were talking about £40m if Leicester wanted to replace Maguire with Dunk or Tarkowski.

I think you'd be looking at 70-100m.

He's essentially outperforming Virgil Van Dyke in the Stats and out of the two, he's clearly looked far better than Harry Maguire.

That sounds silly money, but it really isn't.

Amazing isn't it!
As much as we love Egan, there no way a club would spend £70 million on him at this stage of his career.
If the footballing god's smile on us and we sneak into Europe and he has a good season next year then.... Maybe so?
Now we could easily demand £35-40 million. But who would we replace him with? He's too important to us.

None of that takes into account his work in the opposition half.

Twice the player of old Dutchie and £70m would be giving him away.

I saw Egan's first game for us, a night match away to Walsall. He was drafted in as an emergency recruit and did well. He headed everything. I don't know what happened after that, but he went back to wherever it was we'd got him from (was it Sunderland?) and I the next time I heard his name was when I saw a clip of Wilder on transfer deadline day and the initials "JE" were on his flip-chart. I don't know what he'd been doing in-between, quietly getting on with his business I suppose. I know we signed him from Brentford and I remember reading, probably on here courtesy of the magnificent Roygb...(whatever he calls his sen)...that the general consensus amongst their fans was that he would get his body and head in the way of things, but wouldn't be a great miss. It sounded like we'd signed a pit prop.

In his first few matches he didn't look anything special. He came with a hefty price tag as well (£4M for a bloody defender? ARR MUCH?). He was making £2M for Brayford look like good value!

But gradually he's emerged as the central linchpin of the team. To me, he always seems to look a bit awkward. He's got a sort of hesitant, stuttering run, a crab-like gait, and I was convinced that he'd get absolutely mullered in the Premiership by faster, more technical players. But he isn't. And the reason for that is, his footballing brain. He positions himself so well and reads the game so well that despite not being particularly pacey, he just doesn't seem to get himself or the team into trouble. In fact, he regularly gets us out of it. And he corrals that back line with some authority.

There's another thread, talking about the need to eat humble pie about McBurnie - which I strongly disagree with. But in this lad's case I can honestly say, he's a far better player than I gave him credit for initially and I'll gladly have a big slice of that humble pie in his case.

Simply superb! Well done that man.

I was also there that night as we lost 3-2. He partnered Matt Hill who also went on to prosper with us albeit not to the same level.

What a signing he’s been and hopefully our long time captain.

Just read Spurs are fancying Diop and have been quoted £50m.

What price John Egan at that rate?

Diop is playing Walking Football compared to Egan's intensity.

£20-30 Id guess as our players aren’t rated by those who have that kind of money.
For me it’s great they no one is going to be looking to pick off our players as they’re not young enough to be real top level prospects nor are they exciting enough signings to be making when they’re in their mid 20s and above. Our only concern would be if someone was out of contract and one of the smaller teams in the league can offer the wages.
Therefore we have a really strong and stable base to build on going forward without the worry of it being picked apart by the big boys. Perfect position from which to build an consistent Premier League team.

One day they will learn that defenders are primarily supposed to defend.

Brentford allowed Egan's move to us because he was limited in possession.

That's because our players only run around a lot and work hard. Amazing where low talent, basic football and hard graft can get you.

Being ultra critical, he's not as good on the ball as O'Connell or even Bash, however he's been brilliant in that role of being the lynch pin of the team. He's just a brilliant defender and seemingly a rare breed these days that enjoys the art of defending. It's noticable in a couple of games such as Everton and now Brighton, that even when we haven't played that well, Egan has been colossal and we've won both those games, kept clean sheets and Deano has only had a couple of genuine saves to make. I really don't care if other teams aren't looking at him. To us he's priceless.

I’ve mentioned this before but I think it’s the system that suits the players perfectly and is making them look better than their normal standard.

If he Egan, O’Connell or Fleck move to another PL they’ll be underwhelming at their new clubs and wouldn’t be surprised if their careers stall.
Where as I really think that who ever Wilder and Co pinpoint as replacements suited to out system will fit in and impress very quickly.

Also we don’t rely on a single player.....we could sell any individual player and we’ll bring in a replacement who will be as good if not better.

What's the stage of his career got to do with it? Wank-Bissaka was £50m and he's done fuck all

I was going to say the same and I actually thinknegan would be the easiest to replace of the three as any centre back worth his salt wpukf love to play in our back 5

Totally agree...Egan plays the normal orthodox centre half postion......very commanding...good at headers but loads of defenders can play that position.
Where as O’Connell plays a hybrid centre half.....good on the ball....occasional overlapping left wingback position....so his crossing needs to be good too.

Basham is probably the hardest to replace because he‘s a centra half that covers right back helping Baldock....but also regularly roams into midfield and even out on the right wing. Bash plays 3 positions every game and he has unbelievable stamina to get up and down the field.
Doubt many defenders in the game could get anywhere near to doing Bashams job.
His role is Taylor made to fit Bashams strengths of versatility, intelligence and stamina.

I’m telling you now (like Duffy) if Bashsm moves to another club he’ll almost instantly revert to being a bang average Championship/ league 1 player again.

Totally agree with Sheffsteel, if he goes he goes (doubt that he will mind, why would you)? But no one individual is bigger than wilders team. If he left for say 35m I'd trust wilder to bring someone in from a lower division for about 5 m to replace and we move on. By the way I'm not being anti Egan … I think he's a cracking player, but honestly Everton FFS
