Blues and Soul magazine had interviewed people from New York who travelled to the Casino, which was pretty rare in those days, I think that is where that story started. It happened in the 90's in Sheffield with Gatecrasher, when young people from New York were flying into Manchester to spend a weekend in Sheffield to attend the club.

Well I was going to major soul venues from 1973 and still am. I've never heard of the New Uorkers flying in and have never heard the story before nor know anyone on the scene who has, even being an avid reader of B&S at the time.

Richard Searling, a friend of mine was THE DJ throughout the Casinos life had this to say about the supposed award

"ST : Did Wigan Casino deserve its title of "Billboard's Best Disco in the World" in 1978?

RS : I m sure it did. However I think it's extremely odd that we did not celebrate or publicise such an important international accolade at the time. Neither, to the best of my knowledge, has any official paperwork or trophy ever been produced. As I was a resident DJ at the venue at the time, working for RCA and playing Billboard Hot Disco releases at the like of Angels in Burnley, I m sure I would not have missed it. In fact I would have been shouting from the rooftops about it.........go figure"

Being there every week for eight years I'm sure he'd know better than either of us.

Same with the 100,000 members, maybe, the vast majority never went. I had mates with membership cards who never even went to Samantha's a ten minute walk for us. It was just fashionable at the time.

For many it was a short period in time based on youth club experiences, progressing to nighters. Lots of the "returnees" these days fall into that category whose timeline as far as listening to records is relatively short and can be seen in many of the playlists. Good luck to them all though, it's better than playing bingo. But the soul scene has progressed since 1977/78 when after years of top quality sounds, pop dancers became the norm. Real soul came back 79ish and many of those there because it was fashionable drifted away. the current oldies scene is generally nostalgia, far removed from the original ethos.

I realise that we have swerved off the "John Brayford" topic, so apologies to anyone before anyone complains!

I think there is bound to be an element of Nostalgia for anything that was popular all those years ago. I went to Samantha's occasionally, when they would let me in (depending on the doormen), and just loved soul, motown, stax, along with most other musical genre's.

Yes, OT, apologies :)

There are still vibrant venues with playlists that differ from the Northern Soul Top 100. Many only want to hear stuff only from their time on the scene. I still want to- and still do - hear something "new" and then look to see if I can afford a copy.

The last time I went to the Green Room on Devonshire Green on a Sunday afternoon, I only recognized about a dozen songs, they played alot of very obscure stuff I had never heard, made a real change. I think the same lads run the Woodseats WMC venue.

Yeah, mmmm, I'm sure it was brilliant (even I went) but does anyone know owt abaht The Beard? Is he staying (please) or is he going?

Well, when i say "boys", i think the youngest i've seen at events is touching
Not sure a Scooter could carry me to be honest!

But my late father and late uncle did build the Scooter shop near BDTBL

They get mom, dad, 2 kids and a goat on one in India you know. (and the in-laws in the sidecar).

Touching what?

My mid life crisis saw me joining here rather than squeezing into a Parka with a Keep The Faith badge emblazoned on it and riding around as if I was there in the mid sixties and claiming to have had a Vespa back then even though I was 8 years old.

"Touching what" - I posted "scooter boys" then i was about to post that the youngest I had seen on a scooter at events was touching 45 - but then i realised that posting "boys" and "touching" in the same sentence on here, would get terribly mis-interpreted so i thought i had deleted it without posting. looks like i messed up.

I wasn't going to reply but realise I'm already tainted with GCHQ for replying anyway.... Thanks.

45? That is the younger end then. The ones I know are all at least ten years older than that.

Twisted Wheel man myself . Love the music , always have .

Coloured guy , Graham Edgybarmio ( didn't like being called black ) taught me to dance . Shades , Mojo , Ark , also good .

Bradford - let's hope the fella stops . Brings a smile that bloke does even when not top form.

I have actually. Now you mention it :D

Seriously though, I was at the lights in Wigan between the retail park (next to DW) and a police station. Each "sight" that went past in my 2 or 3 minutes stopped was worse than the previous.
I went in burger king and this huge woman dressed head to toe in pink with flesh drooping out of any slight crack in clothing like water escaping through gaps in the wall walks in with 4 kids. 2 of which had no shoes on and there feet looked like they'd been used to clean a chimney.. Anyway, I'm sat down trying to enjoy my whopper when the two kids with no shoes decide to have a race around the restaurant. They must've done 20 laps. Then, the decided to stand at the end of my table to watch me eat. Most off putting.

Maybe if she stopped spending £25 on burger king, she may be able to afford some trainers for her kids.
You see sights like that up and down the land. I was with my Mum in B&M Bargains on Haymarket last year (and yes i'm well aware of the types of clientele such businesses attract, especially in such attractive locations, but my Mum can't resist a bargain) when a delightful woman shouted to her daughter "...nah then Paz (I can only assume the daughter's name was Paris, which tells you all you need to know), get thisen ere or i'll smash th' 'eard in", or many years ago in Oxford when I had an argument in the queue with a woman in the Game shop, whose son had bought three games on a "Buy 2, get 1 free" deal. She was trying to return two and keep the "free" one for nothing.

Too early for me. Remember Edgybarmo, got a bit of a twat as he got older though. We were saying the other day what had happened to him. You'll know Mopsy then, he's still around.

Brayford has a touch of quality. Hope he stays.

I did that in the Nat West off the Moor once. Withdrew cash on the credit card then used it to make the minimum payment on the same card.

Edgybarmu (not sure how it's spelt tbh), originated from Heeley I think? Went to Ann's Road school. Did turn out to be a bit of an arse as he got older if my memory serves me right.
