How everybody can write off 2 quality midfielders after a very limited number of minutes apiece is beyond belief.

We could give them both a chance to get up to speed in the next few games and then make judgement.

I think the worry is Rothwell. He has been given a contract and has shown nothing at all so far. He also comes with bad reviews from Rangers having not been able to nail down a place in what is generally a lower standard than the Championship. Given CW's stubbornness we could end up with Wilder trying to prove a point by playing him in front of better options.
Phillips is only a loan and I thought he looked useful but is unlikely to be here next season.
Hopefully Rothwell does kick on with this magical 'pre season'. Wilder has already pointed to Rothwell's achievements but they are in the past and age is not on his side.

Having just turned 31, and avoided any noteworthy injuries, I wonder what his excuse is if his legs have gone?

He shouldn't be written off yet though because he's clearly going to be badly lacking match fitness

His fitness levels are miles off , he hardly got any game time in Scotland & it shows . He shouldn’t be anywhere near the team or bench in his current state , a poor Jan signing as he’s gonna contribute fuck all between now & May .
He looked a good player with Blackburn & Leeds but we’ll only know what version of him we’ll get after a preseason .
No way should this lad be getting anymore game time or a place on the bench for that matter in front of Soumare & Arblaster
The good old pre season myth strikes again

lets see what happens in august with rothwell i applauded his signing but have to admit hes been poor when hes come on but hes better than hes been showing us so i havent given up on him

💯

Preseason is around 5-6 weeks

He signed 9 weeks ago

Why is he not upto speed having been given a personal preseason plan

Either we’re shit at conditioning or he’s fucked, or both

Uninspiring midfielder...to go along with our uninspiring plodding midfield.....and this totally uninspiring season from start to nearly the finish.
He was much better 2nd half, but him and Jairo aren't the most mobile

I know it is usually with us finishing on 2nd May, and the season not starting until 2nd week of August in the EFL, let’s get the players back early mid June rather than start of July and have proper strength and conditioning

There's some great dark comedy to be had reading back to the posts in January from the "I know ball" crew telling us how great Rothwell is.
You have too laugh but he's probably worse than any signing Selles made.
I guarantee he will not be included in the list the Wilder fan boys keep listing of Great Wilder signings on a budget.

On a serious note do we still go and actually watch players play before signing them, even if it's only in the Reserves, B team or U21 or whatever they are called now ?
Because if we do i would seriously like to know what the person who went to watch him play actually saw.

Probably watched the highlights reel from us at Elland Road in 2024

Of course we do. He absolutely dominated the match against Clyde reserves.

He isn’t a bad attacking midfielder who can thread decent balls through to the strikers who make runs in the channel. He’s like a more accurate version of Hamer without the shooting skills. He isn’t a true central midfielder and certainly not a CDM. So he just adds more old, expensive competition for a position we already have two of our better players in. Sheer stupidity to sign him

He's never going to be a full time starter who plays full 90s. Even in his 20s he wasn't. But if you can get 2k minutes of average Championship play, he's a reasonable squad player

MOM today after a rusty first 20 minutes or so he was excellent
I certainly did expect it

Rothwell was MOTM today helped by Hull’s tactics of letting him have all the space and time in the world to pick his passes, rather like Norwood you have press him and not give him time on the ball.

I think Wilder sees him as next season’s Norwood / Coutts player let’s hope he still has the legs for it cos 18 months back he was one of the best players at this level.

This. Hull should have pushed on and exposed our midfield. They allowed Rothwell to shine.
