Player Suggestion Jimmy Dunne

I’m not arsed about this one. Playing at his ceiling now. Doesn’t look like he has the technical ability or the agility to make it at the level above.

Nothing wrong with that particularly. In the grand scheme of things the level that championship footballers play at is absolutely insane compared to 99.9% of people who enjoy football.

He would have been a good fit and I’d have been ok with signing him for this season, but if we’re going to put people on 3/4 year contracts and are aiming to get promoted we have to sign people with an eye on the level above too and I personally done see Dunne up there.

If staying at QPR is his best option that kind of backs up that opinion as well.

I think he'd be a good signing, but not necessarily a starter in either position; which I believe would be problematic for him.

Never enthused with him so not bothered really. I expect the likes of JJK will also be disregarded with Wilder gone.

We'll need to make clear top 2 level signings to justify passing up the likes of Dunne, Darling and Kenny on free transfers

I thought the same
Solid Champ player. He’d have done a job. At 27 or older, it didn’t smack of someone who would be making the step up to PL level did it? Felt like gets us up then ends up as a back up player or back on loan at QPR a year later.

He’s probably best staying at QPR. He’s valued there. Continues to live in London.

It hasn’t enhanced any promotion rivals either.

It would have been an ok alternative to Seriki but not a very imaginative one.

I’d hope we could do better than him and JJ Kenny to be quite honest.

I might be completely wrong on him but based on what I’ve seen and what I’ve read he seems the prototypical Wilder signing. He might help us get promoted but he’ll not offer much after that. It’s the exact reason why I’m not entirely unhappy we may be revising our transfer strategy.

I don’t think Dunne, Darling or Kenny were ever really ‘progressive’ signings. Might have been decent at this level but squad filler if we went up.

Not sure they would ever help us progress as they were relatively high floor low celing championship players at best given ages etc.

Safe and steady targets, but feels like we are aiming for a more high variance recruitment approach now. Like Brentford did with Maupay/ Toney etc etc,

Throw enough darts at young players with potential and if a couple hit you’ve got a 40m player on your hands. No chance that happens for many of our reported targets

I'd certainly have taken him. We're already lacking in central defence and you'd think that Ahmedhodzic will inevitably depart. Dunne could've covered both RB and CB slots. He's also such a threat from set-pieces, something we've lacked for some time now.

Basically this. These sorts of players are fine on one year deals if we are in a "promote now" window and simultaneously have some sort of longer term plan for the position (can be a lot longer term for my money, if it is a case of we have someone that is probably ready in two years, then year 1 is Dunne and year 2 is a loan, that is fine), but otherwise I totally agree with you

Aye
Not so long back a similar proposition was mooted about Robinson (re JOC’s ‘absence’ ) although I acknowledge Dunne appears to have demonstrated a greater competence asa (2nd tier) full back that JR did/ has despite initially that being deemed his primary position!

The recurring) view that the likes of Dunne, Darling, Kenny are adequate+ for a promotion push but lacking once (if) elevated, so ‘avoid’ presents significant challenges.
We are unlikely to sign (m)any that are top flight ‘ready’ unless we have massive resources.
Players in this (niche) bracket will be in high demand & we will be competing with (‘established’) Premier clubs &/or those just promoted.
We will (likely) be competing with clubs that can offer more money & immediate’ presence in / with the ‘elite’. (ref Tanganga)
There is also ‘competition’ from overseas - ref Burnley needing 2 new centre backs ‘despite’ promotion’,
Even if we can identify & secure the best talent with capacity & capability to perform from ‘lower’ leagues there is little guarantee. For every Delap there is a Clarke & Szmodics (using just 1 club as a (partial) example) Equally Tanganga is unproven at the next level albeit @ a purported £1.5m very much worth taking that punt.
I’ll be intrigued to see whether the ‘foreign market worthwhile in this context - Will Mayenda &/or Isidor ‘do the business’ next season? - (highly) doubtful
A more pragmatic approach may be necessary- signings that afford high(er) probability of elevation who, if subsequently not up to the task can be flogged (for profit?!?) given their enhanced status as promotion winner with associated ‘nous’. Even if they ‘fail Tanganga, Mayenda etc will be ‘worth’ more than their initial fee
Not ‘researched’ him but Neil Redfern springs to mind?
In a slightly different way Ransdale is (likely) another if current rumours are accurate
