Player Suggestion Jimmy Dunne

The system has lost all the qualities it was first built upon.

Keeper with sky high confidence in Hendo.
Classy, combative and hugely consistent wing backs in Baldock and Stevens.
An organised back three, wholly on one another's wavelength in Bash, Egan and JOC.
Good possession in Norwood and Berge, with outlets in the attacking wing backs.
Energy in midfield in Fleck and dare I say it, Lunny.
Strikers able to take one of a small number of chances we may get, in Didz, Sharp and Moose. Although, Archer, BBD and McBurnie haven't been too bad in that sense.
So what does/can he do?
Try and build that again, almost from scratch. Or try something new?
The backbone is going to be Gribic, Robbo, Blaster/Brooks, Osula/McBurnie. Is that even a strong enough platform to try the 3 at the back style rebuild?

i think we have to ditch the 3 centre backs now were going in to the championship play with a back 4 and go 433 or 4312 think hamer could do well in a free role behind the 2 strikers and if we do could be egan/worrall and robbo/ trusty for the 2 centre back spots

Very difficult to experiment/train players to get used to 4 at the back in the Premier League, a bit more manageable in the Championship I would imagine. The only modern formation with three at the back imo would be 343 like Wolves play or Luton (I think) with wingers around a central striker and two mobile/creative/defensive midfielders (I suppose that could be Hamer, Davies or Arblaster). We'd still need wingers (Brooks plays left wing for the U21s I think and maybe RW could be a loan signing) and possibly LWB depending on RND's injury.

I'd still much prefer us to play 4 at the back as it's much more flexible and gives the option to fall back to 352 if necessary (like Brentford do). Either way, we'll need new CBs, but with 4 at the back you can concentrate on the 'traditional' type, not the specialist who can bomb forward like JOC and Bash. I'd had a look at the Championship CBs whose contracts are nearing their end (this year or next) and also come across Jimmy Dunne as well as Jake Cooper, Paddy McNair and Nathan Wood of Swansea (the latter at 21 yo could be a decent 'one for the future').

I put together some stats (a few weeks ago now mind) to see how they compared to the (at the time) best rated Championship defenders in the league so far (Greaves, Ampadu and Vestergaard) and how they compared to the defenders we currently have on the books last season in the Championship:

You can see the current best rated defenders all have over 90% pass completion (possibly why they are rated the highest) with lower tackling (tho the stats for Greaves look impressive!) while for our defenders last season that was a big weakness. Last season our major strength in defence was the basics like tackling, heading and intercepting. Looks like Jimmy Dunne and Jake Cooper could be good Egan-like additions, while McNair and Wood a bit more calm and composed on the ball.

Worth highlighting again this post from earlier in the thread:

I’ve met Jimmy through work with a charity fairly recently.
Very down to earth, hard working and genuine guy. Went out of his way to support what we are doing and we collectively didn’t think for one second think he was just doing it for media clout.

Perfect type of personality for Sheffield United.

Now we appear to at least be losing one CB in Trusty, we should definitely be in for Dunne

I don't think Trusty needs replacing with a left footer because we have Robinson and RND, and Gilchrist could also go on the left of a 3

Dunne would leave us well covered for a back 3 and also able to cope if Anel leaves - in which case we'd have no permanent RCB option. Souttar's only on loan too so we could do with adding more permanent defenders

RCB: Dunne, Anel/Gilchrist
CB: Souttar, Gilchrist/Anel
LCB: Robinson, RND

He's exactly what you'd want your centre half to be

Robinson, Gilchrist and RND are also ideal in this regard

Aggression and leadership are basically essential. One of the biggest reasons we were such an embarrassment last season was our absolute lack of that, embodied perfectly by Trusty

I've said this recently but I'll say it again. There's no evidence that Wilder is going to return to a three anytime soon and we're been linked with wingers which doesn't suggest they we're going to return to 3 at the back at the minute. Might be wrong of course though fella.

Give it time

Wingers can easily be incorporated in a 3-4-3 as well

That's true but we've never played 343 under Wilder. All preseason it's been 4 at the back with wide players further forward. I say wide players rather than wingers because Hamer isn't a winger or wide player but my guess is Wilder has played him there to fit everyone in like O'Hare and Brooks but also proving a point to the g
board that we need a winger. Might be wrong but Wilder is very savvy.

It's time to sign him

You've advocated for it for a long time. I can't say he's a player I know much about, but an old QPR supporting colleague rates him very highly.
He's out of contract in the Summer, so it's the right time for somebody to low-ball QPR.

Isn't Dunne right footed? You'd imagine Wilder would be looking at left sided centre backs so Anel can return to rcb?

Scored yet again today...... or he had, they seem to have changed it to O.G

How we could have done with the odd goal from a CB today. We've not had a single one all season, despite our height

It's no coincidence that he's scored 3-4 already. He's aggressive, brave and attacks the ball well. That's more important than height alone

We have ZERO theast from set pieces
Have we scored direct from one yet.?
I can't even remember being close

Me neither. It's amazing. We were very good at set pieces under Hecky

It would help if we stopped pretending Hamer is a good set piece taker, and took him off them. Deliveries have been average at best

But the main reason must be strategic. Again, it's odd - there's no reason we shouldn't work on attacking set pieces a lot because it's not like we carve teams open from open play is it

We've done fuck all from the long throws either

We have to start maximising everything in the 2nd half of the season if we want any chance of top 2. That means strengthening in attack AND being better at set pieces for a start

He played very well at Bramall Lane and scored with a near post flicked header.

If we don't already have one we need to employ a set piece coach. The last 2 games we've had numerous opportunities to test the opposition and we have failed. Against Burnley Trafford was jittery under the high ball yet we never put a big man on him. Today fed up of seeing the ball chipped into Palmers gloves or onto Bartleys head. Agree Hamers delivery is poor. For all Souttars height we never found a way to use it to our advantage from set pieces. Dunne would be an ideal replacement. Wouldn't be surprised if the manager tries to get Worrall off Burnley as he's getting splinters in his arse sat on the bench. Unlikely they would sell to a promotion rival though.

The coaching staff certainly have questions to answer on this

Never scoring from set pieces simply isn't good enough, and it's too important to ignore

agree on hamer for me harrison burrows should be our free kick taker hes the best weve got imo

Peck takes a much better corner than Hamer does. The only game we have looked dangerous from set plays this season, was against Wrexham. Peck was putting it on Souttars head every time.

Burnley mixed their corners up against us because we defend them so well, why don't we?
Wilder used to be - back stick for JOC to nod back across goal, this year it's been - back stick for Souttar to nod back across goal.

FFS...... here he goes again

Yet another goal

Great trolling of his marker with the celebration too 😂

I don't see Dunne coming this window. I know he's out of contract in the summer but I reckon we'll go for a loan centre back and stick with Gilchrist/Seriki for right back.
