I think the Phipps message on stability is valid. It IS about giving the man in charge time to build his team.

I think that the very instability caused by so much transfer activity in January (which most of us welcomed) has contributed to the difficulty we have had since. So I think managers should be mindful of not just the length their tenure but of the players' aswell.

I think that, for a team game, there is too much focus on the one man - I would like to see more influential senior players, who could reorganise their team during play, instead of just before and during halftime which is the only real chance the manager gets. But we seem to have a personality cult of dictatorial managers like chess grandmasters who - the media implies - move their players around like pawns - though I accept, I'm not an insider and I don't know how much power really is devolved to the playing staff.

I think that Danny Wilson's sacking seemed very unfair and Blackwell's was badly timed too.

I do think there is validity of a flexibility of staff without sacking managers. For instance when results get stale, a team of managers could re-adjust with one who may be more 'motivational ' assuming temporary charge say in the run in for promotion e.g. Wilson and Morgan could have swapped temporarily at the time of the run-in.

I think the wrong Milliband was Labour leader.

....just thoughts.....

I think the players are very flexible in their systems; we often change at some point in a half, without waiting for a break. Though I think this must come from the management. Decisions like when should Murphy switch wings probably come from the player and the manager at different times.

There was also an occasion where DAvies and Done were taking it in turns to play wide left and up front, they seemed to be working that our for themselves. (From very brief evidence they seem to have a good, but unconventional, mutual understanding. I meant to post on this after Thursday.)

I do think we lack natural leaders on the pitch; someone to rally the troops if we go behind say. I have seen Davies and Doyle do this - but it's not clear and obvious leadership.

Part of it is that modern coaching and management emphasises personal responsibility (hence all the talk of "decision-making") and intrinsic motivation. This is absolutely welcome, but at some point it helps to have someone either pull you round or give you a kick up the arse - extrinsic motivation.

Says the man who has a UKIP voting record.

Thanks Fatty, just the obvious point that American footballers' roles are very inflexible aren't they?

I think they have completely different defensive and offensive teams who swap in mass substitutions don't they? and I think this is why they can plan out such well choreographed moves like the one you illustrate - this and the stop start nature of the game. The very lack of ball skills in the game is illustrated by the way they will recruit 100m runners into the teams solely because of their speed and not their skills.

I agree with you about a lack of novelty in free-kick varieties - for instance quickly taken shots, possibly NOT from the place where the foul happened (further back) but these variations test the rules of the game and count on trying to catch the ref out. (Leeds were a bit narky like this last time they won the league (with Cantona weren't they?) Best example I can think of for us was Saunders improvised throw in off the back of the goalie - Cruyff's one two penalty with Jesper Olsen springs to mind, but of course we are talking about one of the greatest geniuses ever to play the game. Though we tried the famous 'Willie Carr' chip then volley free-kicks between Woodward and Currie I seem to remember....?

Imo it's another top class interview.

Finally the CH question gets asked - and not really answered! (Response is basically: "My policy is not to comment on transfers." Which is fair enough: the journalists should be asking the right question to the right person, they got it half right so far.)

All in all though: "Let's focus on the play-offs." I agree. A great man to have at the club.

What is a centre-half ??? We haven't got one of those ...... do we need one ?
Naah .... why bother; they're almost as over-rated as those bloody striker things and we went half a season without one of those !

Why not concentrate our efforts on small, lightweight, nimble centre-midfield players that look good on photo-shoots in the new kit .....
Surely we could get a few more of those in during the summer ??
UTB & FTP

Cotterrill on the right flank and Evans in the middle will suit me tonight. Wembley here we come.

The only time it ever worked. They must have tried that same routine a dozen times before it actually achieved something. :)
