It depends on if they're here to beef up the squad or seen as starters.
In any case, we have so many positions to fill we were always going to have to bring in a bunch of players of this profile.

It might well be that the takeover is hitting a snag and unlikely to compete quickly enough for us to do anything significant in this window, so we have to wheel & deal with minimal budget.

Yes, and would be unlikely to be competing at the top of the table. PA can't afford to bankroll a promotion push. We'd need to rebuild and it would probably take a few transfer windows and some player sales. Let's hope the takeover issues are resolved in the next few weeks.

We're also in need of squad players. If he does sign then he can cover a number of positions. The squad is drastically thin, I'd imagine any budget that we do have to sign players for a fee will be spent on improving the starting 11.

Let’s have a bit of perspective here. Am I excited about Shakleton signing? No, do I recognise that we have to build a SQUAD of players that includes people who will not be in the first 11? Yes. Is Shackleton a better option than any of the players we’ve released without offering a contract to? Again, yes.
Not every bit of news has to be met with ‘the sky is falling’ type negativity.
Shackleton will serve a purpose, will snap into the tackle, will run all day and show some commitment and heart - something you all saw was lacking in the squad last season.
Now chill the fuck out.
