Big game for the lad tomorrow.

In most people's eye's he came in as 'back-up/competition' for 'our no.1 target'...but it seem's he's has done well in training/pre-seaon and so Wilder has placed his trust in him to partner O'Connell for the opener at Bolton....we still need to get another CB in but the next few games may well decide whether this player is a back-up for Wilson or a replacement.

It's a gamble for sure, hope the lad does well and we get a result.

UTB!

He's got a bit of potential, but how much we still don't know
Would like to see a more experienced keeper as a mentor like figure to young George
Any suggestions?

Has he placed trust in him or has he been forced to because we haven't managed to get a No1 CB in?

Of course Wilder will trust him , he wouldn't have brought him to the Lane if he didn't .

Will he be definitely be starting though ? Wrights an old head and a no nonsense leader . Maybe he could be viewed as a safer bet tomorrow when we know we'll be under the cosh . O'conor allegedly thrives on that kind of CB partner too .

Either way , we are miles stronger as a defensive unit than we were last season .

He's a lot to prove in my eyes. I've only seen him twice but I'm slightly concerned about him.
Obviously I really really want proving wrong.

What've people seen in him during pre-season that's so concerning? Admittedly I only attended a couple of games but he didn't do anything wrong? If anything he looked rather solid paired with O'Connell.
My only concern was his distribution - but to be fair, if the ball is in row z the opposition aren't scoring.

I like centre halves that find row Z ,Ferdinand type centre backs can fuck off for me ,give me Allardyce/Morgan types anyday.
Totally agree, especially at our level.

The amount of time poor tip-tappy football at the back got us in trouble last season, which in turn then gets the crowd on edge and the atmosphere suffers.

Lets just have the mentality they we aint letting the opposition score and let the attackers do their job.

Semple signed a pro contract the other day - maybe Wilder sees Wilson as number 1 now in the hope that Semple can force his way into the first team squad before the window closes, and if he can't then we can sign someone else. Either way it is frustrating not having the last defender in place already

And John Stones going price is £50m. Makes you wonder

We've had fuck about football at the lane and it's got us nowhere . At least you can't go wrong with back to basics .

It's not Wilson who I am bothered about , it's Long , but perhaps being too critical of the fella .

Dont think it is, worryingly Long seems to have as much confidence in himself as we do at the moment.

We really need an experienced head in there.

Strange one was Wilson. Doesn't look good enough on paper, and I was underwhelmed when he signed but I'll wait to see him before casting any judgements.

I hope Wilder's signed him with the intention of him being back up, bit of a gamble if not but at least he'll have time to bring another in if he realises that he's not quite up to it.

He was signed as back up initially, there's a reason for that. No matter how good he might have looked in pre season, we shouldn't be gambling on him as first choice in such an important position.

We need a centre half we can be fully confident in, especially as our full backs aren't the best defensively - certainly the one on the side where any new centre half would be playing. Then there's Long who inspires no confidence, and he looks increasingly unlikely to be replaced.

Out of our back five only O'Connell gives me any confidence defensively, that's not enough. And I'd also rather him have a more proven, consistent and reliable partner.

Have to admit he's my biggest concern tomorrow too. I'm basing that purely on the horror show he had at the lane last season and the views from the Oldham fans too. The good thing is that he knows he's got to show something as it's no secret we are still in the hunt for a centre half

Warnock to Shaun Murphy at half time after the centre half had attempted to bring the ball under control in our box : "Just f***** head it and f***** kick it". (from "Made in Sheffield")
Became a constant joke with Kozzy doing his best Warnock impression.

What's he look like on grass though?

It's the ones who we all feel will fuck it up , will pull all stops out. Wilson will be sound as a pound.

Weak link Long and Basham.

Let's hope Basham post match interview is 100% better that last seasons first game at Gillingham.

Let's hope Long takes a hat , puts his contact lenses in , puts his boots on the right feet , gloves on the right hands , clean towel . Head and shoulders , we may be ok.

Can see Wilson and Long having their every move scrutinised by the negatives. Just get behind them and encourage them because that's what CW will be doing. Theres a player in him(Wilson) maybe CW has said to him the shirts his at the moment. A ploy to encourage confidence. We all know confidence is key to a players performances so let's not be knocking our own players confidence.

that's what I have said! Whats the problem? hes been solid in the pre season games I have watched. Did nothing wrong against Grimsby or Derby. Time will tell of course, but he deserves his chance. The new full back is my worry defensively. Was given a torrid time against Tom ince at times. Most of there joy came down his side. Anyhow, it will all come out in the wash in the next few weeks!

Fucking hell . Didn't realise Wilson and Long had been reading the posts on forum.

It's not being negative , it's been practical and honest . ALL players will get 100% backing on the day , everyday .

Last season we had players with no bollocks . Some players are still in that team . Let's hope with confidence they have grown some.

Let's wait and see . General Cromwell will be appointed any day .

Semple has been playing for the 21s and behind closed doors at Barnsley at right sided centre back, although he is a lefty.

I really think his time is next season hence looking at year long loans for the 4th centre back.

As good as Semple will be...... CWs words, I think he will be pushed to captain the u23s and maybe on the bench for the first team for experience.

remember he is still only 17 years old. I tell you all this though, if he was given his chance he would not let us down.

IMO Centre halves should be big and intimidating ,dirty bastards at times. I share the view of Charlie Williams ,who made it quite plain " The ball might go past me, no problems. The man might go past me, no problems BUT
the man and the ball passing me No fucking chance"
