No, but they are demanding somebody now, next on the list Adkins. At the time, that was Wallace.

I am demanding somebody now. I want someone (a) who is better than what we have and (b) is not a crock. Wallace fails this test.

Do you want us to sign somebody now?

If so, do you want that person to be fit?

is this good news??perhaps i've been unlucky with the timings but i've never actually seen him play

Ah, you're wanting signings WITH the gift of hindsight as well. For all we know, the next on the Adkins list might be just as much a crock as Wallace. John Ebrell signed with a slight ankle knock. At the time he signed there was no suggestion that Wallace couldn't get back to full fitness. Coady seemed out of reach so Clough went for Wallace. As it happened, a bit of patience might well have got Coady, but Clough didn't want wait and thought Wallace would 'do a job' for him. There's your managers dilemma, wait for the player you actually want or opt for change now and get someone not quite on the same level ability or fitness wise but available. Clough got it wrong. But still people are demanding sign someone now, sod waiting. As for me, I want us to sign the right players to get us up.

No one will argue with that, and that does seem to be the priority.

However, you would have thought that with the money men behind us, the Academy, and the experience within the Club, that after 5 years .....

We should not only be challenging for Promotion, but actually have beginnings of a Squad to perform and compete in the Championship

We dont have owt like, we are at the point where any player comming in is gonna be under huge pressure to perform

...but he was still 2nd or 3rd choice on the Clough list for that midfield position, crocked or not. Couldn't afford/can't wait for Coady so sign the next guy on the list, clough only did what plenty are screaming for Adkins to do now.

Can't afford him - move on
Crocked - move on

Get down that list and work the scouts.

This isn't in defence of Clough Ricky, but it was never an either or situation. At the time Liverpool was asking approximately £1.4 million for Coady, and I'm sure as much as Clough would have liked him to sign, at that price Clough just couldn't justify the outlay. So the benefit of hindsight comes into play, and we all know what roads that can lead us down. Signing Wallace must have seemed a more affordable option, and as Liverpool weren't budging in the evaluation of Coady Clough needed to bring players on board.

At the time I recall writing that I hope Clough plumps for quality over quantity. If we'd signed 6 or 7 quality players we'd have been in a good position to push on, but instead we went for a policy of signing jobsworths, with a few decent players thrown into that mix. One of Clough's last signings was Done, and he was one of that rare group who suggested that we might have a chance of moving forward. Trouble is we just never bought enough of the right type of player. There were struggling attempts to shore up our defence, McCarthy from Palace seemed the answer, but as it turned out McCarthy's finer moments were long behind him and eventually he left the club.

But back to Coady, a club prepared to gamble might have been prepared to take a chance at Liverpool's evaluation, but I recall that quite a few poster said 'no' at that price, and by then Clough had bought a midfield straight out of the Argos catalogue. We had triers instead of the one thing we (still) need. Players of obvious quality, those a cut above our existing squad, players who'll be equipped for what this division, and the division above, demands of us.

A few months later, Liverpool had dropped Coady's price to £400K, and Huddersfield nipped in and got themselves a good player.

I fully believe that the quoted price of £1.4M was an absolute crock, hence the fee Huddersfield eventually paid.

There's no hindsight with Wallace's injury history. He's not a man you build a team around. If he wAs the 2nd choice it was a bad choice.

Lee Williamson got injured and became a crock with us for 2 years. That was bad luck for the club. I have never blamed them for that. Wallace was a known problem - as was Ebrell.

You gamble on lesser ability, not fitness. Coutts is the same
.

I agree, but he WAS the compromise signing for Coady. As I said, there's your dilemma as a manager. Hang out for who you really want or compromise and get what's available.

You could be right Guesty, Liverpool may well have tried it on due to his performances with the Blades, but that was the price quoted. So from Clough's perspective, does he remain intent on Coady while other targets who are free then get snatched by the competition? Or, as he decided, there were players of far lesser valuation that could come in and do a job for him. Nothing complicated about it, you adopt a stance and hope for the rewards of that position.

I'm sorry for James Wallace as he has had an awful time, and seems like he was a good player, but not sure how much longer we can give him.

I have great sympathy with what you have put.

James Wallace is the most vital player for CM we have - no one else can play how he does.

If you are Catholic - go and pray !

The football gods are not happy with us and presumably require a sacrifice or two .......

Its these type of players that put the Clough management time at the lane in a bad light . We have players like Wallace and Coutts on good contracts ( no idea of there salaries ) , but the bottom line , this type of player, are actually preventing us moving forward.

1. They are always injured , carrying niggles , are unreliable and you cannot build a side around them.

2. The money it is costing us , is restricting us to purchase other players.

This is not the players fault at all , but you do wonder of the competance of the clubs management , bearing some are still on the payroll.

They are both known of being good footballers , but i am afraid as a asset they are in negative equity , and we will never see the best of them , which is sad and frustrating , as they are the players we desperately need and missing .

Perhaps the answer is that, since we have several players who are "injury prone" but have potential, we should retain the one with the best potential and bin the rest. So we take a calculated risk on the "potentially best of the bunch" rather than having a full treatment room .....
