James McAtee

Prefer both in midfield over Norwood, McAtee carries the ball and commits defenders, ala a young Grealish, Norwood wants to play the glorious pass most of the time, then watch players ghost past him while he waves his arms around
Norwood has been fantastic for us for ages with maybe a 15 month rough spell when everyone else looked shit as well. 😟

Amazed people can't see it

How many goals did he score and how many chances did he create ?
Playing one twos with centre backs does not make you the best midfielder in the league but does do wonders for stats
As part of a CM pair his main role is not to score and create goals - so measuring his performance on those stats is flawed.

He performed excellently in his role, in my view, starting off attacking moves and breaking up play (many on here say he just points and lets people past him, unfair in my view).

Edit: form took a dip back end of the season and Doyle was excellent in his stead. That’s the same setup I’d want next year but in reverse (ie. Doyle back and starting with Norwood there if there’s a dip in Doyle’s form).

one of the main reasons for our promotion is because Doyle replaced Norwood

One of the main reasons for our promotion was Norwood being the best midfielder in the league for 2/3s of the season.
These two views are not mutually exclusive. I'd agree with both. Having both these players would be great

Come on mate. This post shows a considerable amount of ignorance on your part.

Not every player has to score and assist (even if he could have scored a few more, yes). The guy was running the games for us. He's rated pretty universally as a top top Championship midfielder and his promotion record backs that up.

Norwood was fantastic for a long time last season. When his form dipped it was great that Doyle stepped up.

P.S. Do you think Hecky is stupid?! Would a professional football manager be fooled by a player faking some stats?

Don’t think Hecky is stupid at all that is why he dropped him. Acknowledge that he made tackles and interceptions but my problem with him is that his first choice on receipt of the ball is to knock it backwards or sideways, he rarely moves him or the ball forward. Yes he offers something but we looked a much better ”team“ with Doyle in it as he moves the ball and him forward.

Norwood should definitely stay he still has a role to play and there’s no way we’re signing two holding midfielders which we’d need to if he left. But the other side of that coin is that there’s no way he should go into the season without any competition for his position.

norwood basham fleck and osborn are all players that cant be in the starting 11 but all 4 could be handy coming on for the last 15 if were trying to see a lead out till full time

I have always been a Norwood fan, he's a class footballer, but, as I said a few weeks ago the fans were getting restless with disappointing games from the team and wanted change, which doesn't mean they're right but, Sunderland away on a Tuesday night he brought in Doyle and Macatee from the start, best half an hour from us for ages and played well for the whole game, we didn't look back after this game, playing the two young lads from the start most games, if we were fortunate enough to have these two next season it's a no brainer from me they've had to start, and I'd have Norwood on the bench and Still be delighted to see him come on.

You say this despite the fact we were top two for two thirds of the season with Norwood in the team.
He was immense for us and quite rightly was in the championship team of the season.

Are there many examples of a club actually exercising the buy-back clause ? I am sure there must be, but I can't think of any.

Lukaku for his second spell at Chelsea maybe?

DS said on Blades Ramble, Doyle fee quoted was doable, however as always salary was a problem, and would he accept a relegation clause in the contract, say 40% wage drop????? Also stated we have a very good relationship with Man City group!!!!! Hence Girona friendly.

Hope we are working behind the scenes to bring Doyle back. All very quiet…
might not be a bad thing it being quiet with tommy doyle could be late in the window before we get him but still think he will end up at the lane again probably a loan if city do us another favour 🤞

I think Doyle was and still is the only realistic ones out of the two of them to comeback to us. I don't see where Doyle's path to first team football is at City and I think he does go down as a player they would just cash in on and put a buy back clause on.

McAtee if he looks good in pre-season for them then I think Pep keeps him around the first team.

Wolves now interested apparently...

I'd say our established loan and development history with the Manchester club stands us in good stead. Cant see Wolves being the club too keen on homegrown players, they will find some Portuguese or North African player through their dodgy agent connections.

Apparently Wolves interested.

Apologies, missed the other posts!

one of the main reasons for our promotion is because Doyle replaced Norwood
Norwood was dropped after the Luton game. Hecky freshened the midfield up and we did go on 4 straight wins run.

We were sitting 2nd after that Luton game though after 36 games, so saying Doyle replacing Norwood was the main reason is a bit disrespectful to Norwood.

Yep, our promotion last season was a masterclass in using a squad well, especially during the injury nightmares. Everyone played a part.

Turning point was Blackburn in the cup Doyle transformed the midfield that day and cemented his place from then on
