CONFIRMED James Hanson leaves the club

The weird thing about gloating about Hanson’s downturn in fortune is that he was one of our players.
And he played an important role in helping us gain promotion.

Teams in league 1 were beginning to work us out, like in the Fleetwood, Bury and Shrewsbury matches. Defend deep in numbers and we really struggled to break down teams. We lacked physicality and Wilder had a problem

So what did he do. He brought in Hanson to rescue our season. Hanson was used as a very effective industrial battering ram. We lumped it into a crowded box and teams defending deep struggled.

Other clubs saw this and stopped using the tactics of parking the bus, defending deep in numbers.
This meant Hanson’s strength was no longer required.
Also let’s me honest Hanson was limited but always a 100% trier with a great attitude, so deserves respect.

Absolutely spot on SS played a vital role in the second half of the L1 campaign, gave us a target when sides sat deep ala Fleetwood and gave us a target of someone play through and bring in the midfield runners , something in the second half of last season we could have done with not necessarily James Hanson but something that Matt Smith at QPR can offer

SUFC O/S said:
James Hanson has left Bramall Lane by mutual consent, after both parties came to an agreement with regards to the remaining term of the player's contract.

The 30-year-old, who joined the Blades from Bradford City in January 2017, was instrumental during the second half of United's record-breaking title-winning Sky Bet League One campaign.

For the record, the striker made 15 appearances as a Blade, scoring once, on his debut against AFC Wimbledon, and spent the second half of last season on loan at Bury.

Hanson, who was made available for transfer by boss Chris Wilder at the end of last season, is the fourth player to leave this summer, following the departures of Chris Hussey, Louis Reed and Samir Carruthers.

He was a useful signing for the 6 months to get us out of League One but the cost of that was a two and a half year contract. Best for all parties if he moves on now.

Did us a job but the length of contract we gave him was a tad surprising as he was never going to feature much at the higher level.

GLTTL.

Obviously Wilder just wanted to get the target manniest target man he could get and James Hanson just screams 'League One target man'.

But we could and should have signed someone better.

As soon as we were promoted, it was inevitable he'd be surplus. He's miles away from Championship standard.

Ultimately, we will have spent far more money on him than we should have.

I can't actually believe he's only 30. Seems to have been around forever.

And in other hindsight news, the embryonic Met office are advising the Captain of the Titanic to be watchful for icebergs.

He helped get us up and although we may have paid him more than we had to, he earns my thanks for that.

For the avoidance of doubt and for DronnieBlade, he was not the major reason we went up. He played a part both up front and defending set pieces. Football is a team game and he was part of ours for a short while.

In absolute seriousness, GLTTL.

Can we move on now, or do we need pages more of abuse for the poor lad?

He was the final piece we needed to get our league one title over the line

Agreed - definitely contributed a lot. Remember reading that Alex Ferguson said his big regret after they lost the title to Leeds was not signing Mick Harford just so they'd have a big bugger up front to go long to and push people about. Big Hans did that job for us.

His contract ended in 2020 - see link - amazingly! So by my maths he was given a 3.5 year contract!

He did a good job though and I reckon he could have done a job off the bench last season to just rough the opposition up and hold the ball up but then Clayton came in. Good luck to him, hope he does well for them, always like AFC Wimbledon.

Did okay, was obviously a very limited striker. It's easy to make this argument when the season ended in success but while Clarke was out we didn't have anyone with any height to put up front. He had at least one match winning assist I can think of. We were in a tough position where we needed that kind of striker, in the JTW, and didn't have huge sums of money to do it with. So we bought a guy who had just enough to let us mix up the play.

Compare that to previous campaigns where we haven't signed a player or two to get us over the line and instead have gone into play-off finals without strikers, or play-offs semis without centre halves, or play-off campaigns where we shouldn't have been as low down as the play-offs anyway.

That's a fair comment, he was bought as an insurance policy and you don't spend a lot of money on a star forward for a "just in case" scenario.

However, as others have pointed out, the length of his contract was out of kilter with the reason for buying him but this was probably just another example of United using the limited resources at their disposal not very wisely. The last JTW is another example of this and I'm sure there are many more.

Mind boggling that we gave him a contract to 2020. Sums up the kind of ridiculous financial constraints Chris has to work within.

I'd imagine a longer contract on less money pw was more important and he may well have profited with his transfer/ signing on fee and any pay off. GLTLL

For me, Hanson actually provided us with 'unseen work' at a time we needed a 'Hanson'. The Fleetwood game at home was a clear indicator of a requirement for his services. Hanson's presence on the pitch also provided a psychological element, unseen.

GLTTL, cheers for the title winning season too.

Sounds like he got a good contract and made a bit of money off us, but he seemed like a good bloke so I'll let him off because of that and his work during the promotion season.

Thought he was alright to be honest compared to Lavery and Ched during the Walsall cup game but obviously not at the level we need now, like Lavery and Ched
