He always came across as some one who liked to take a chance. Being paid every 3 months, living under constant threat of being sacked and helping set up false companies to avoid tax and foil FFP will be right up his street

Very few United players have gone to Wednesday as players. The last one I think was Imre Varadi and he left us 41 years ago. Unless we count Earl Barrett who was only with us on loan.

Varadi didn't go directly to Wednesday. He left us in 1979 and didn't sign for them until 1983.

Earl Barrett played for us and then for them straight after but as you say he was a loan player.

I read many years ago that the last United player to be transferred to Wednesday was winger Bernard Oxley, who moved there in 1934. That might still be the case as no one else springs to mind. A number have come the other way of course.

Have just looked in my Sheffield United Head to Head book. It lists all players that have played for both sides. Lesley is shown as being with us from1928 to 1934, then as being with Wednesday from 1933 to 1935. So. As you say it looks as though he went direct from us to them.

The only other player that I can see who (from the dates listed at either club) who seems to have gone directly from us to them is Billy Kellie, but that was even further back in time. Shown as being with us 1892-93 and with them 1893-94.

All the other players listed have a gap between being with us and being with them, which suggests the move was not a direct one.

In the whole history of the existence of both clubs it looks as though only two players have ever transferred directly from United to Wednesday.

Might be in a minority of one but he's the most overrated Blades players of the last 40 years. Pens and the odd free kick seduced the vast majority into believing he was actually worth the inflated £4m and even tipped some over into hero worship. We were easily pleased.

yeh, 22 goals in a season with the next highest scorer getting 4. What a waste of space.

I can't remember anybody hero worshipping him.

He was a Premier League striker when we signed him and he went back to the Premier League when we sold him.

He was too good for the Championship.

I can see Tuns25 point....I also think he was slightly over rated.
I watched Beattie closely in some matches and noticed that he expected every team mate to pass or cross to him everytime.
If anyone dared pass the ball to set anyone else up his body language was terrible.
Remember a particular game where Billy Sharp was out on the left wing.
I‘d love to get Sharps honest feedback on Beattie because when ever Sharp had the ball its was as though he was on the pitch to provide for Beattie.
I remember Sharp taking a shot at a tight angle forcing a good save from the keeper.
Beattie was in the box expecting a cross....so he was waving his arms around and giving Sharp daggers for daring to shoot.

My final memory of Beattie was the Stevenage game in the league which we needed to win. We were 0-2 down early in the game but we dominated the 2nd half
and deservedly pulled it back to 2-2. In the last minute needing a winner we had a corner...their defender headed it up into the air it fell to Beattie just outside the 6 yard box. He blasted it on the volley from close range but hit the keeper on the knee and ricocheted over the bar...bad luck but he should have scored.

Obviously Beattie was a very good striker (one of our best in recent times) and had a bit of swagger about him....however he didn’t come across as a team player.
Being a striker is also about being a partnership working together...unless your strike partner is there just to provide.
When Sharp played in the same team as Beattie our Billy only scored 4 goals from 29 matches in 2008 the season and 4 goals from 22 matches in the 2009 season.

Those seasons Beattie was playing the Keith Edwards role with Billy Sharp playing the Colin Morris provider role....the system was massively in Beatties favour.

Whilst I understand your reasoning for this - I do remember a game where a sharp shot was rolling in and beattie left it close to the line so that sharp could get his goal tally up and running, but the defender nipped in and cleared. I was actually fuming that he hadn't been selfish. So don't 100% buy the point about him not being a team player
 
I thought Beattie was very lazy when he first arrived. However, like the rest of the squad under Robson, he was really unfit and trying to get through the full 90.

The ONE (and absolutely ONLY) good thing Hoofmaster Blackwell did was get the squad fit enough to last 90 minutes and actually be able to turn the talent they had into performances. Beattie was the main beneficiary from this and, once fit, showed what a good player he still was.
Sadly, failing to get back at the first attempt meant he was too expensive and had to go.

Not my point. Most overrated player given the gap between the high regard he was/is held in and actually how good he was.
 
Couldn’t agree less with those saying Beattie was overrated, he was excellent. Most clinical finisher I’ve seen at BL - excellent set piece taker too.
