Blackmanfeel is/will be doable, but Chelsea,Man Utd, Man City etc inflate wages so much for the kids that im sure we are out of the market on wages alone, If there was no knock on then fair enough im sure we would take the plunge but bring him in on £20k pw and how long before the rest of the starting 11 are knocking on Wilders door asking for similar wages, and they would perfectly be within their right.

He has 3 years of a four year contract left so the only solution appears to be getting him back on loan for a year with an option to buy at the end of it. Loans seems to be the way we are going this transfer window and that suggests whilst CW has a decent sized budget we are not going down the route of high permanent fees and long contracts until the ownership battle is settled.

Perhaps if we can't afford Blackman, we should ask about Dom Bess; anyone who saw his diving catch at Headingley today will know what I mean...

we have to get a quality keeper. push the boat out.. it is the most important position on the pitch

Despite my commitment to the goalkeepers union, I am not sure I quite agree with that. I think Klopp got it seriously wrong by relying on Karius and Mignolet, but I am not sure that spending the money they paid for Salah on a top goalkeeper instead would have led to them having a better season. But I would like to see us with Blackman in goal next season...

i'm with Clough senior on this when he was justifying the amount spent on Peter Shilton (and i wasn't a goalkeeper). 'a top keeper will save you more goals than a top striker will score'

I don't really see the down side of just getting him on loan again.

Me neither. In fact, I think it's to our advantage in the short term to do this. I suspect we have a limited budget with which we are going to have to do a lot. We need a quality centre half, and at least one, if not two strikers. That's going to cost a lot of dosh. Chelsea want £2.5M for Blackman - I'll be honest, I don't think he's worth that. I think he's definitely improved a lot, I think he's superb in the air, I think he's still very suspect in terms of his positioning and getting down for low shots. Anyhow, if we were to loan him that would give us money that we could put towards one of the two strikers at least - and that's more important to me. We have a competent goalkeeper as back-up in Moore. I'd rather not see us blow a chunk of the striker budget on Blackman and leave us scrapping around the lower leagues looking for a striker.

Is it too much of a stretch to imagine that JB would take a drop in wages for first team football ??? Say £15k a week?

It’s still £780k before tax etc.

The downside is the same with any player you take on loan. If he has another good season with us then his value could increase to a point where he'd be out of our price range.

He'd have to be pretty amazing to up it from £2.5m.
If he was good enough to get us promoted and extra million or so wouldn't be a massive problem.

Simon is a decent championship keeper but jamal has premiership written all over him

wouldn't be a surprise if all 3 promoted teams take a look at JB - Cardiff & Fulham probably - Wolves perhaps - but all 3 will need backup of some sort.

If that’s the case - and you’re in his position, do you go for more money and not playing or back yourself to be number one here and earn that move / a promotion with us?

Harry Maguire did just this when he signed for Hull - didn't we offer £5K per week, Hull signed him on £15K, but hardly played.

In the end it worked out fabulously for Harry - but Bruce hardly played him in 3 years - preferred his boy apparently

I reckon most would take the cash and trust their ability to get in the team. The old phrase is a "bird in the hand" and there's no guarantee we will challenge next season for promotion. If we get 4 or 5 decent signings in, get Coutts back playing and don't lose JOC/Fleck & Brooks then we have a half decent chance but I am sure JB at the moment is hedging his bets.

Re: his salary. 22k a week is roughly the going rate for a half decent Championship player nowadays.

If we don’t find a way to start paying those kind of salaries within our means then we’ll find ourselves back in League One before too long. Might seem ridiculous to some but that’s what Championship players cost now.

Is it really? Where have you got that from?

‘Within our means’. Have you seen how much money each Championship team is apparently losing. It doesn’t look like any of them are paying wages within their means.

I wonder how much a fully decent championship player is on? £44k a week I assume?

It’s annoying. I only got £15 a week when I played for Cole Brothers - and they made me work 9-5.30 5 days a week for that and No pre-season!

Good footballer -aye!

Pity t’ lad feels a need to scribble on himself though, thinking he’s being trendy when in fact he’s just following the herd, which he doesn’t need to do as it’s his football that sets him apart, not the ink, applied indelibly to his skin, that people will remember him for.

We obviously won't have a fortune to spend so it's about getting the biggest squad improvements for the least outlay.
Let's say we bring in a decent striker who hits a bit of form - you could reasonably expect 12-15 goals from him, maybe more?
Is Blackman 12-15 goals "better" than Moore over a season? I wouldn't say so.
Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see Jamal back next season. Hopefully his potential wage won't be an issue.

I had thought that JB might be a target for Palace, as Roy & Lewington watched him at brentford match, but they've just signed getafe's keeper on a free and with Speroni & Hennessy still on the books (although out of contract in the summer) I doubt JB would go there as 3rd choice.

as far as keepers go it is about the points they save (so yeah i’m contradicting what i posted earlier)
moore is also a decent keeper but i reckon jamal is worth 6 points extra a season.. whether that justifies his crazy wages is ultimately up to tufty

Then if we want to operate within our means as all clubs “should” we have to find other ways or we will struggle to compete long term. I can’t comment on whether any clubs are working within their means as I don’t see their accounts.

I am however quite confident of the ball park salary for Championship players now and it’s easily in that region. It stands to reason when you consider what we were paying players in the Warnock era (circa promotion season). Football’s economy has seen significant rates of inflation since then.
