fantastic statistic ! makes the exclusion of him even more completely baffling , did he have a slight injury ? cant imgine it was anything to do with his attitude , from what i have read about him the players all really admire him and he comes across incredibly proffessional and CW obviously felt he was worth a punt coming up a league ( and came in and performed better than anyone expected )

bit like Chris Luketti in the Prem, personally think he did very well for us even though didnt play until quite a bit into the season and never played in the Prem league before and was about 35 ??

lets hope Wright stays injury free and keeps the other back 2 in check and he can continue that record through til the end !
 
I bet he loves it....I know if I were him I would be letting all my team mates know that stat...in a banter way of course.

He's getting on a bit, but if he's fit enough to see out the season then he's the first name on the team sheet when picking that back line.
 
As a plain and simple defender, without all the other attributes included, he's the best since Harry. He reads the game so well, wins his personal battles and is such an accurate header of the ball.

He never has to slide in to tackle because he's always one step ahead of his attacker. I think as part of a pacy 3 he'll easily make it in the championship.

Best since Harry? That's because we haven't had any centre halves since Harry left!

Even then, Wright isn't as good as O'Connell. And O'Connell isn't as good as Harry.

I've always said Wright is the key man this season though, if we are to play 3-5-2, he's the ideal sweeper.
 
...given that stat, I do sometimes wonder whether he can take the number of games for a full season...we don't know what niggling injuries/fitness issues a lot of the players may be carrying...as Wilder recently stated with EEL.
 
Play a 3-5-2 and, for me, Wright has to be in the middle. His reading of the game works in two ways - it allows EEL/Basham/O'Connell to attack the ball while also keeping the communication open between the three of them so the positioning is a million times better. It's no surprise that we're far less organised at the back when he doesn't play. He'd struggle in a two as he'd have to cover more ground but then you can't really form a reliable centre half pairing from EEL, Basham and O'Connell either.

If Wright plays every game between now and the end of the season we'll be up by Easter.

I love JOC but as a defender he isn't as good as Wright. As a footballer, aerial threat and athlete yeah - but not as a defender.

Agree completely mate. Wright, although not that fast, is fast of thought, one of the key traits of several good players down the years. It's something to do with focus, concentration, and a general awareness that others seem to lack. Jimmy Case used to be the same. Apart from being a filthy bastard, Case was a good reader of the game, as witnessed once he went to Southampton. Of course at Liverpool he was a good player, but there he was surrounded by class players. At S'hampton it was a very different situation and he had to take control of their midfield and lead by example. They loved him and his ability to see spacial awareness, direct other players, and generally stiffen their defensive frailties, was key to them doing well. We're lucky Wright has become central to our performances this season, probably as vital a player as anyone else in the team. Maybe a poor comparison, but he does what Bobby Moore did for the Hammers and England. Not as eloquent of course, but he has the same 'football' intelligence and will help us towards promotion, that's a fact not an opinion.

If he exerts as much energy as he did against Wimbledon then he could play till he's forty. The cigar smoke will get him before his legs go.
 
Think we all agree, Jake Wright's a cracker of a player. Never mind his limitations, what he brings to the table is priceless and a testament to just how good this guy is. I know many have commented and said he'll not be part of this team next season, and that may be the case, but at the moment what value would anyone put on his commitment to the cause? I hope he remains here after his legs have gone and teaches the young 'uns those parts of the game you won't find in a coaching manual.
 
It's not as simple as the statistics suggest, as the 'We win when Runaround Done plays' nonsense demonstrates.

The big difference is that Jake is very very good at this level and well worth his place. Invaluable, in fact.

When we go up, however, Tufty will replace him with the Championship version of Jake Wright. No room for sentiment I'm afraid.

Yes, facts and stats are fine until they don't help with the tedious message you keep banging on about. At that point you have to tell the S2 hoofers, it 'isn't that simple'.

They will be so awed by the god that walks among us, they wouldn't dare criticise your undoubted wisdom.

Wright good, Done bad - it really is that simple eh?
 
It's what he can teach our younger players that matters too. All that experience can be passed on in a fraction of the time it takes to gain it the hard way. I'm sure our man Maguire has learned a lot from Dawson and co at a hull for instance.

Good man to have around the club, and another that would be a decent coach. Academy job in future perhaps??

I very much doubt he would be out because of attitude too. He’s Wilder’s man. Had him at Halifax. Took him to Oxford, then brought him here. CW trusts him. I suspect his omission was for 2 reasons.


1. The other 3 (JOC, EEL and Bash) all give us more going forward with the big lads a threat on set pieces and Bash able to play out from the back and join the midfield allowing us to seamlessly change formation. All of this helps us break teams down when they come and park the bus.


2. Those 3 expect to be regular starters and are more likely than JW to get the titty lip on if they don’t play. Wilder and Wright both talked about him not being expected to be a regular starter when he signed with talk of hoping he could force his way in and CW talking up what he can influence in the dressing room even if he’s not playing etc.

We’ve seen over the last 2 months that EEL is a significantly worse player when asked to play Wright’s sweeper role. I thought he looked improved Saturday when moved back into his preferred position before going off injured. Let the big lads go and attack everything. Let the sweeper sweep. Round pegs, round holes. Wright is the brains of our defence whereas EEL and JOC offer brawn in abundance.
 
I watched him last Saturday when a ball came over the top like when we screwed it and conceded against Fleetwood. Did he attack it and panic, did he fuck, he backed off and the whole problem evaporated.

That's wisdom not ability.

That's why (Football God's willing) he should start every game that he can walk for us, in The Championship and beyond.

Don't agree with your second point Dane, if any player gets the titty lip on with CW then I think they will be on the slippery slope to not being part of his future teams or plans. I don't think CW would take an ounce of notice if any of them started sulking.

I probably oversimplified. But, Basham is loved by all of our managers and by all accounts have a first rate attitude. But most of us probably wouldn't have him in our first 11 (by virtue of EEL, Wright and JOC being the back 3). Wilder might be reluctant to drop such a model professional who has expectations of being a regular when he could drop a player who is "just grateful to be here" for want of a better phrase. I also think he wants to send the message that if you apply yourself like Bash does, you will get games.
