Not to be hyperbolic but we really do need to step up our recruitment drive....

By my reckoning we are already down to 3 first team defenders for 3 positions and if /when Lavery and ched leave we are down to 2 strikers.

We really need to make some headway on these deals in the next few weeks or so or risk an untenable situation next year. We can’t be fucking around on deadline day for key elements of the squad - we all saw how that ended up last time.

I assume the 3 you're thinking of is O'Connell, Stearman and Basham. I'd add that Leonard could also play in a back 3 and Wilder has played Lafferty on the left of the 3 a couple of times before, not that I'm advocating that

Unless his lord and saviour is planning on using the young 'uns this coming season? Do we think Slater or Norrington-Davies might be playing a part of our season or are good enough for the first team?

Chris has done a good job of managing the wage bill and clearly he is prepared to run with a very lean squad to get the maximum out of the budget.

To my recollection we are looking at being without the following:
G: Long (likely next week)
D: Hussey, Heneghan, Graham, Semple (likely Scotland), Norrington-Davies (loan mooted)
M: Reed, Carruthers, Thomas, Brooks, Gilmore (likely Tranmere), Slater (loan mooted)
F: Donaldson, Hansen, Evans (loan mooted)

I've not seen much on Lavery and Eastwood should be looking to get games for somebody. If he sends Ched out, I wonder if he would consider keeping Lavery around as an option. Seems pointless to recruit a 5th choice striker.

Either way, it's a fair amount of bodies either out or likely out with Henderson the main arrival.

Take the point but if we want to be successful I don’t think we can be playing a left back or centre mid in the back three for an extended period.

I’m sure Chris appreciates there is still LOTS of work to be done this pre season.

Personally I think Leonard will end up in the back 3 eventually, possibly for Basham

On the bright side if he's out for 6 weeks, he'll only miss the first couple of weeks of the season, could be worse.

To be fair, the way we are set up is far from conventional. For RCB and LCB, you need someone who is also capably going forward. You're not going to get that filling the team with defensive stoppers.

I’m not sure... has he had much experience in a back three compared to bash?

He was brought in to be an quick athletic box to box midfielder with a decent shot imo. We’ve yet to see much of that from him to be fair - so maybe his athleticism would aid him given our centrebacks like to get forward.

I don't know whether he's played there much before. I do think that Wilder sees him as back up for Basham though

Maybe Callum Sample will get a opportunity during pre season. Wilder spoke very highly of him last year before he got his injury.

Wilder has already said he’s sending them both on loan for the next part of their development, although that could change if we get really desperate.

Out for 6 weeks due to facial injury incurred against Stocksbridge

Surgery needed

I felt sure that all Shakey Jakies were defiantly told earlier this year (and perhaps last year too) that Wright would be gone by the time summer was over and that he wasn’t in Wilder’s plans, yet this news would seem to suggest that he’s considered an important member of the squad whose absence warrants hasty replacement. How odd...

Another one who needs to play games at an higher level than the 23s, a loan will be high on his list I’d have thought?

That would perhaps fix the left-sided CB cover, but we’re a bit short for the middle role (always Wright’s stronger position) in the event Stearman is unavailable. One option would be for Basham to move inside and Leonard to come in, but I’d be concerned about that having to be an option for more than a game or two – RCB is by far Basham’s most comfortable position.

Leonard is definitely a RCB. He’s defensively sound and just like Basham has played a lot in midfield which means he will be perfect for our attacking centre back role.

Norrington-Davies and Slater will be better than brooks, mark my words.

Agree with this..

I spoke too soon. Gone on loan to Queen of the South.

He is off to Scotland on loan Was recommended to Queen of the South by Chris Morgan according to their manager Gary Naismith. He has played against Livingston and Hearts and will get the game time he needs Great move by all parties

Scottish Championship. Not too bad a level to start with. I hope him and Sam Graham kick on this season.
I'm with you on that Callum was recommended to Gary Naismith the manager at Queens by Chris Morgan and I believe Trav was also happy that the boy would get the game time United see as next on that groups development

The only advantage of spending time in league1 (Div3) is that you get the chance to see players that may make the step up to the championship. The central defender that played very well in both games against us in our last season in 2016/17 was Partick Bauer of Charlton Athletic,in my opinion he is one that is worth consideration,25 year old,6'4" German and probably most importan, affordable.
