Jake Wright

I've said it before and I'll say it again - our defence always looks far more stable and cohesive when Jake Wright is on the pitch and our defensive performance today exemplified that point.

I've only seen the highlights but it was completely apparent that there was a total lack of understanding and leadership in the build up to two of their goals, particularly the second which I am convinced would not have been scored had he been playing.

I believe that, if we are to continue with three at the back there is only one line up which can manage this successfully and that is Bash, Jake and JOC and that any other combinations simply don't work.

Having said that, the loss of Coutts and both our right wing backs at the same time has clearly had a massive impact on our overall standard of performance and one which is a cause for concern.

Yep, i love seeing shit players play infront of better ones down to ‘physicality’ and then proceed to get bullied by the opposition. It’s my favourite.

Spot on, Stearman is so shit he made Fleck get outmuscled for the first, O’Connell lose the ball and Stevens miss the tackle for the second and ensured Clarke didn’t jump to head away the cross for the third.

On the first Stearman did get made to look a bit of a fanny with a header on half way. Play did then go on for a good 20 seconds after that but he wasn’t completely blameless as he ended up out of position as a result. Not scapegoating him but just pointing this out.

Give over. I’m assuming you were there? Gregory absolutely bullied him

Whilst none of the defenders painted themselves in glory he is the one who’s been put in for his ‘physicality’

He’s always the one to be dropped. It’s beyond a fucking joke.

CCV deserves dropping far more

Yet we keep’being told that Wright’s a ‘ leader on the pitch’, perhaps he offers more than CCV, esprit de corps.

Yes, charging out of defence to try to win a header near the half way line brought back memories of one of my, ahem, all time favourite centre halves, Mr. Killgallon , and I shuddered at the very thought.

I always remember Kilgallon trying a back pass and screwing it up and conceding a goal, then for the next season or so everything that came near him in the same area of the pitch got whacked into the stands. Watching CCV against Birmingham was similar, no chances taken!

I was. Imagine what Gregory would have done to Wright then? :D

Absolutely love Jake Wright, but he is dropped because: he can only play in the middle of the 3, he is slow, he isn't very tall or strong, he is the worst 'footballing' centre half out of the 5 and most importantly because Wilder thinks that in-form Stearman will be a better player than in-form Wright.
For Saturday though I fully expect Wright to come back in, he has the best recent form out of him, Stearman and CCV.

yep he’s crap.. interestingly we hardly ever lose when he plays
when i was a kid there was this other kid that never turned up for football practice yet always got in the team because he was a really good player .. we always lost when he played.. go figure

Who said he was crap? Who denied his fantastic win percentage?
It is possible to accept reality and still like him, try it sometime.

Stearman is lanky, tall but not particularly well built at all. I can’t say I’ve ever seen Wright get outmuscled to be quite honest.

Well I think we can categorically say Wright has been better for Sheffield United in his performances this year than Stearman has been.

In form Stearman hasn’t been around for about 3 years by the way.

How did you find time to watch United and Fulham/Wolves extensively at the same time? That’s impressive.
Don’t need to, neither of them wanting him is more than enough proof.

Stearman's transfer from Fulham to United "end[ed] a difficult couple of years at Craven Cottage where the former Leicester City and Wolves defender never quite fulfilled the brief of a dominant and physical centre back who was tasked with shoring up a rickety Fulham defence. Stearman arrived on transfer deadline in August 2015 and, despite making 30 league appearances in his first season with the club, failed to stem the alarming flow of goals conceded as the Whites drifted towards the drop zone."

Good character, nice guy, lots of experience at this level, but not seemingly a "dominant and physical centre back".

Most informative - thanks a lot.

' The worst footballing centre half out of the five' ?

Have you been watching the same Jake Wright as me ?

Obviously not - has made several brilliant match saving tackles and blocks the last few times he's played. Don't think he's too shabby bringing the ball out from the back too.

It was 'footballing' in quotation marks in my actual comment, by which I meant his ball control and passing. Tackling and blocking are nothing to do with that.

His ball control and passing are at least as good as the othe four imo.

Fair enough, I think the reason Wilder plays him in the middle is so he only has to play easy passes to JOC and Basham and can concentrate on his strengths - tackling, blocking and organising as you said.
