Legend is perhaps overstating the case. For me, he belongs in the category of players we signed and everybody said 'Who? Why?', but the player surprised everyone by becoming a key player for us. They have in common having the best years of their careers with us; not necessarily the most talented players, but they made the most of their ability. Jake Wright is beginning to fit these criteria, Bob Booker and John Flynn (signed from Workington reserves) are 2 that come to mind. Other nominations please.

For some reason I had it in my mind he was mid 30s, so very pleasantly surprised to learn he's only recently turned 31.

He will be in the squad next season but I think Wilder will probably replace him as first choice.

If young Blades wrote to Booker saying he was their favourite he used to call at their house, meet their parents and give them some memorabilia. So legend has it he once sat down with a family of Blades for a Sunday dinner after they wrote to him. He turned out at innumerable club functions, supporters group's dinners, local football teams and would literally drop anything to do the fans or the club a favour. He sat with the away fans on numerous occasions and even turned out when Blades fans organised the Fulham Monty drinking session on a boat on the Thames near on 10 years after he finished playing.

Jake Wright is a good player and I'm sure he's a nice enough chap, but Booker was a genuine Blades Legend and a Terrace Hero. If you're still absolutely certain then fair enough, but I'll stick with Ooh Aah Bob Bukah.

I remember there were grumbles when a fee was paid for Flynn; he might have been spotted in a pre-season friendly or something of the sort. Went on to play in the top division. Another case was Bill Dearden, who was signed for next-to-nothing, having been a so-so winger with Oldham. He had a good career with us as a centre-forward, with an unbelievable level of commitment.

Craig Short from our last promotion season, although he was much better known and played at a far higher level to Wright of course. I thought he was way over the hill and too slow when he came in aged 37, but proved me wrong and was a vital part of that promotion team.

Jeff King for me in that 4th Division season. Thought it was a daft signing at the time, but he made the difference!

Jake Wright is a great player, he is smart enough to know when he is beat (Jed Wallace on Tuesday) but smart enough to just stop him at all costs. Whether he plays next season I am unsure.

CW is ruthless in his recruitment as we have seen before, and it has worked to great effect. I know people say we should replace so and so, but CW will be looking to improve every position ignoring this years performances. We wi

Me too, it didn't look like an immediate goal scoring opportunity but could quite easily have progressed into one.

I think it would have been incredibly harsh to send him off given how far wide the incident occurred and that we had a defender (O’Connell?) in the middle. I would say it was a very good booking to take for the team though.

He ain't no Paul McGrath who was a league above if we are being sensible .

I think most would acknowledge he’s some way behind McGrath in terms of ability but they simply appreciate what they have in common. Excellent reading of the game allowing them to play the sweeper role very effectively between 2 more mobile defenders.

I admire Jake Wright hugely like everyone else. In fact I would strike a medal for him. What? They will? Oh, I won't bother then.

I'm going to swim against the tide though and predict that Tufty will replace him for the Championship, at least as a 'first choice'.

Possibly but then he wasn’t supposed to be first choice this season. Hasn’t stopped him playing around 30 games without tasting defeat. Even if Wilder has plans for him not to be first choice next season, don’t be surprised if he gets a chance at some point and takes it.

I know it's a redundant question as it stands but i'd love to know why Jake hasn't played more games for us? He's been immense this season and made all our other defenders play a lot better when he's on the pitch, whether it be Desso or dirt.

Interesting bit in Chris's latest interview (from about 9.30 onwards) about how you just can't tell how a player will perform at a higher level - "the proof's in the pudding" & all that, they've got to prove themselves.

Says he's got great expectations for certain players (both ones he's brought in & ones he inherited), but there'll be surprises like Jake Wright was this season as well.

Cites Bournemouth as an inspiring example of having once-Third Division players, like Simon Francis and Harry Arter, now playing with very high standards in the Premier League.

This will sound absolutely ******* crazy but I'd love to see him in an England shirt (hypothetically and imaginatively) and see how he would do. Generally totally unfazed.

The thing that i love about Jake Wright snr is he does everything simple, doesnt rush anything and is so calm and collected. You would have thought he was an ex England captain with how he plays. I have no fear when the ball goes back and i see its going towards his area, its either going simple to another player or row z. Pure class.
