Now the only member of our team to never taste defeat. He's the key at the back, without him we look clueless.

He's a leader thats for sure and as i said on one of the EEL threads the other day, after Moore, he's the next name on the team sheet if he's fit and available

When you're losing your best players are always those that don't play. It's like back under Clough when Collins was a world beater until last season when he was another crap regular.

JW made a difference when he came in and is a decent experienced stopper but Bobby Moore, he isn't. Yes I'd put him back in (at Basham's expense) but part of last night's problem was EEL having an off day. It happens.

Solid and dependable, always feel far more assured with him around.

EEL is solid, not always dependable.

O'Connell is poor, I've seen enough now.

Basham? simply awful, very much the Dean Hammond of the equation.

In Jake Wright's case i'd disagree. Collins was fecking awful and you can't compare the two players or scenarios. Wright doesn't have to be a Bobby Moore, but when he played he seemed to command the back 3. Perhaps the other three aren't able to lead in the same way as him, so its a communication issue, but he did seem to read the game well.

I can't talk about last night, but the two games i saw Wright play against Chesterfield and Shrewsbury he looked to be very assured at the back.

I agree with the above but also add that it was a good game for EEL to have a below par game last night (except for the lost 3 points) under the scrutiny of Paul Lambert. That might improve our chance of keeping him here we he is loved.

Very much disagree on O'Connell if I'm honest, I think he's a better player than EEL. Certainly a better ball player.

from ready the programme and when they ask the questions to team mates about who will make a manager etc , the other guys always seem to mention Jake Wright as he talks with great passion about football and always offering advice etc

He is key to us this season with 2 young CB next to him ( reminds me a little of Craig Short from the promotion season to the PL -ok he didnt play a great deal but was very important in terms of influence and always remember the defence seemed very assured with him in there )
hopefully Wright will play allot more of this season

The defence plays better when Wright is part of it because he's the best leader, organiser and communicator in there. It's no coincidence that EEL had an 'off' night.

Said on another thread that we need to have JOC on the left, JW in the middle and EEL on the right (of the 3).

DIsagree about O'Connell. Thought he was comfortably our best defender last night and very unlucky to have a goal chalked off.

Could he play in the championship? I don't know but I tell you what - Oxford must have some bloody good defenders if he wasn't going to be first choice. The bloke is absolutely immense at what he does and as yet still hasn't tasted defeat as a Sheffield United player. Long may that continue.
To answer my question, yes - yes he could. Keep him injury free and he'll cut it in the championship for me. Still undefeated, let's not mess about with different systems when Wright in the middle of a 3 means we don't lose.

We asked for it, we finally got it and we were proved right. What a signing he's turned into.
