Clyde Best. 1970 something. Blades fans throwing bananas on the pitch and doing monkey chants. It was normal for the day. Funny even. After the match - "Bless this House" on TV. White man calls Black man a coon a wog and a choc ice. Black man calls white man a white honkey. Just normal back then, funny and acceptable.

It isn't now.

Times change but people don't necessarily.

Yeah but what you have described is "Love Thy Neighbour" isn't it?, "Bless This House" was a Sid James vehicle, where he played Sid Abbott, a father of two kids where he was bemused by the so called "permissive" society, and spent a lot of screen time saying "oh my gawd".

Failed a medical at hillsborough Saturday

Wasn't the medical on the Monday, that's when it was booked for according to my source..

I told a couple of Wendy mates, wasn't fussed cause I think he's too expensive, and his age made it a double whammy..

Edit, just seen this is an older post, last Monday 24th a player was booked for medical at swills and I was told jags, 2 others are booked this month, but no names as yet.. I get snippets that I pass on to my pal, don't usually need to post on here about them..

Ronald Koeman has just announced Jags as Everton's captain for next season. Doesn't seem too likely he'll be leaving.

I don't think the words "coon"and "wog" were used in the show either. Weren't they the bastion of lovable Cockney West Ham fan Alf Garnett?

The Major in Fawlty Towers also had a moment......

Yes the Major did that once, I saw that episode on a flight to the USA earlier this year.

And while we are on the subject of sitcoms that they won't repeat, about two years ago I was on Singapore airlines and they had two episodes of "Mind Your Language" on!

Mind your language, where the joke was really about foriegners racially abusing each other.

Capped for his country within the last year, finished last season in the Premier League strongly, confirmed as captain next season of a decent Premier League club, and there were some that didn't think he had anything to offer us because of some innocuous handball incident 10 years ago...

"Innocuous" ???!!!???

Anyway I can't remember anyone saying that he doesn't have anything to offer.

Don't play if easily offended!

Some, by no means all (scattered through the other 80-odd page Jagielka thread), and that's not to say I don't sympathise with the "too expensive" view of others that preferred looked elsewhere. Though not my view personally.

And yes innocuous, because I don't think he intended it, and still think he was fouled by the Wigan player nearest him (McCulloch if I recall).

But yet he's not good enough for us o_O

They was some reight shite spouted by some.

Don't think it was that he wasn't good enough....more the wages he would have cost were not right for united. Too expensive for what he would have brought us. In other words, if we were going to spend that sort of money in a player, it would have to be someone who would make differences to games and win you a game....in other words a striker.

A common misconception in the world of football. It's not just the goalscorer that wins the games. Yes, without the goals it's impossible to win the game but how many points (or games) did Simon Moore win us last season for example?

Yep....I know this.
and you are also talking about the end of the pitch where it makes a difference same as me.

One better player on goal makes a difference. One much better striker makes a difference.
One better defender amongst 4 or 5 doesn't make as big an impact.

That's why all the world record player sales are attacking players.

If we had the budget for 11 players on a salary like Jags would have commanded....then fine, crack on. But we didn't.
So I will say again, if you could afford to get one player in on the wages he would be paid, you wouldn't be spending it on an old Centre half. It would be a forward....all day long.

Quick ballot would solve it, but I reckon in those circumstances pretty much everyone would agree.

It may be a common misconception, but it is reflected in the price. Strikers pound for pound are a hell of a lot more expensive than defenders.
