Just thought some of you might be interested in this piece on former Blade John "Jackie" Smith who played for Sheffield United briefly in 1910. He joined the club on the back of scoring 32 goals in 35 games for Hull which had made him Europe's top scorer that season. He scored 7 in 12 for United but was unlucky to find himself moved on soon after joining the club. He headed to strugglers Nottingham Forest, where he was relegated from the First Division and became disillusioned with the game, heading to Nelson FC, York City and Heckmondwike in a rapid fall from grace. He was enlisted during WWI where he was killed in battle in 1916 at the age of 29.
