Jack Robinson’s long throw

Can we throw (aha) that in the bin?

It causes no problem whatsoever to the opposition yet we seem insistent on it. Completely pointless. I’d rather we just recycle possession.

Thoughts?
Its terrible. I like the idea of having a long throw specialist that can hit a 50pence piece in the penalty area, but the accuracy of these throws and the movement of our players seems to make this about as much use as a Norwood corner.

Get the ball in to their box by any means necessary for me. I've heard Goode has trebuchets for arms

It’s horses for courses - if it’s far enough forward to get the centre backs up or we have a tall centre forward on the pitch, it’s a great option, but not when you’ve only got Billy and Brewster etc to aim for.

I think that's the issue rather than the tactic itself, we've got a team of dwarves where the only hope with the long throw is getting to the second ball because we've got no hope in hell of getting to the first one at the moment.

Who's that Centre Forward who had a great long throw but by dint of his position never got to use it? Was it Jon Parkin?

Whoever it was, I seem to remember using it in the final moments of a key match, for Preston I think.

The whole emphasis under Hecky has changed- we now get the ball in at earliest possible moment, the long throw is part of this ploy. Its much better than previous, its irrelevant that its not pinpoint accurate- thats impossible anyway.- the tactic is v good keep doing it.

I get excited by a long throw for us & nervous against. But you’re right they rarely turn into anything, unless Verrips is in goal

Ain't arf some nonsense on this subject; the long throw is definitely a threat. Let's face it - Stoke City survived more than 1 season in the Prem being very dependent on that tactic. It might have helped us occasionally had it been used.

Just in case some fans missed it - Jack's long throw resulted in the corner that Norwood delivered to get us the 2nd goal that wrapped the game up.

Try to keep up folks!

Charlie Goode took long throws for Northampton I believe. What a waste of his height that is.

Lets try to get Norwood into every post .

I was best man at my mates wedding the other day - i told lots of jokes that went over everyones head and were pointless

If we put Goode in there instead of Robinson with Goode either LCB or Egan there, notwithstanding Davies is the most natural fit, does Robinson then become an option at LWB?

It would seem harsh to drop him entirely after 2 decent games but we know he's only one game away from a Wolves horror show.

So suppose we don't waste time to get to our best XI and Davies or Goode come in for him, would he be an option at LWB? It's not as if Stevens' impact hasn't lessened. It's not as if Norrington-Davies has fully convinced, defensively or offensively. It's not like Osborn's height isn't a weakness defensively.

On the theme that Wilder often brought players in and played them not in their favoured position, he's another one. Add him to Freeman (no 10 or winger, not LCM), C Robinson (wide forward not CF), McBurnie (not a target man historically), Berge (not a box to box midfielder).

Robinson has played around 250 matches and almost exactly 2/3 of those have been at left back. He's a left back. In fact around 40% of his career centre back appearances have come with us.

He's not small so won't get caught out in terms of height for a wing back like Osborn would. He's less exposed at LWB than LCB. He can be creative i.e Jebbo's Everton goal. You'd also retain his long throw and he's potentially useful from set pieces e.g. his goal vs Luton.

Just a thought that seldom gets mentioned. Maybe he could be even better in his actual primary position?

I don't mind it occasionally, just not at every opportunity.
It did cough up a golden chance for Billy against Derby
