You have to admire what Brentford are doing though, £28,000,000 + for Watkins. Wow. Villa might be mugs, but a £ is a £ wherever it comes from. Even after paying Exeter £4m+ it's a tidy profit. And they seem to keep doing it every season.

It’d be a lot easier to admire them if they weren’t quite so pleased with themselves.

I was just saying this to the mrs - she looked interested honest! My only thought is that Brewster is similar type ish and we wanted him more.

Easy to look good against that shower, although I was impressed.

Think wilder had him at Northampton and obviously did not consider him to either not be good enough or the right type for us.
As we all know hell of a Jump from championship To premiership

May as well start the annual Lets sign this Brentford player early this year.

Agreed though he does look good

Great to see him take the piss out of the pig players goal celebration (Paterson?)

Wow. So you thought you’d be a smug git “told you so” and dig out a quote from almost 2 years ago. If he had been championship material back then he would have been snapped up well before this summer. The lads started the season well. Glad it’s satisfied your ego

tbh i was shut down not once but numerous times for suggesting that he could be a half decent player eventually, granted a little harsh to quote a 2yr old post, but don’t make bold predictions and then sling names about when they turn out to be wrong

It was an opinion like everyone else has and is entitled to on here. 99% of which aren’t dragged up 2 years later in a condescending nature. I haven’t been “proven” wrong. A lot can happen in two years.

West Ham have joined Chelsea and a host of other clubs in the race for Brentford's 25-year-old English striker Ivan Toney, who will cost £35m. (Sun) (from the BBC SPorts website today)

And on Wikipedia, when he moved to Brentford.

"...On 31 August 2020, Toney completed a medical and signed for Championship club Brentford on a five-year deal. The fee was reported to be in the region of £5 million and around £10 million with add-ons, Peterborough's record transfer fee...."

To think we could have signed him for £6m or whatever it was is sickening. I know that's hindsight, but I was surprised we didn't go for him because Wilder knew him from his Northampton days, but maybe there was something Wilder wasn't keen on from knowing him well.

It looks like one that's got away right now for sure!

At this point clubs like us might as well just move for whoever Brentford are being linked with. Its staggering how much they get right with their recruitment.

Watkins - sold for £30M
Benrahma - sold for £20M
Maupay - sold for £20M
Konsa - sold for £11M

Made £81M on those four players alone, and they're constantly reinvesting in more high potential talent as they have done with Toney. They have by far the best recruitment setup in the EFL and its something we should delve into and look to emulate.

They also have no academy which allows them to fund their recruitment setup. We've been below par for so many years now. The lack of a European network in this day and age is disappointing

Brentford's scouting costs them a fortune but it pays for itself. Unfortunately it's a proprietary system and it's owned by Matthew Benham. Benrahma was £25m rising to £30m (when the £5m loan fee is included) btw and you can include £13.5m for Chris Mepham too. They're also hot on the Danish market with Benham owning FC Midtjylland.

Watkins: £1.8m in (plus 20% sell on), £28m rising to £33m out
Maupay: £1.8m in, £20m out
Konsa: £2.5m in, £12m out
Benrahma: £1.5m in, £30m out
Mepham: £nil in, £13.5m out

It's unreal. Toney and Mbeumo next cabs off the rank.

I’ll be interested to see what he does post Brentford I’m a bit cautious of anointing him the next big thing just because of where he’s had success during his career. Showed a lot of promise at a young age like DCL went to the prem failed and dropped back down. Has only had real goal scoring success in an ultra attacking Peterborough side and an ultra attacking Brentford side. He’s unlikely to land in that kind of situation in the prem unless he’s playing for a top side. I’m not saying he can’t make it because maybe he’s a late bloomer and really developed as a player but I think looking purely at production in that Brentford system might give a false impression of what he actually is as a player.

Incredible set-up. If they go up, it will be interesting to see how they go about business in the Prem.

With the same approach I'd suspect and they'd probably be fine; I'd definitely back them to finish above the unflushable floaters - Brighton/Burnley/Palace/Newcastle. They've also nudged up the amounts they're spending on players: from £2m for Maupay/Watkins to £6m for Mbeumo to £10m (potentially) for Toney.

I wanted him last year instead of Brewster, much less of a risk and we could have got that midfielder and defender in also.

I kind of hope Brentford don't go up as I think they'd establish themselves comfortably up there quite quickly.

Off the field they seem to have everything very well setup. Add in that they're located in West London & you could see a billionaire wanting to throw some money at it if they reached the Prem.

Said on this very thread that 6/7m they paid for Toney and spending th rest on a midfielder or defender was the

That’s basically what I said this summer

buying Toney and spending the difference to the Brewster spend on a midfielder or centreback would have been a far better use of resources last summer
