You have to admire what Brentford are doing though, £28,000,000 + for Watkins. Wow. Villa might be mugs, but a £ is a £ wherever it comes from. Even after paying Exeter £4m+ it's a tidy profit. And they seem to keep doing it every season.
Yep if you look up smug in the OED there’s a Brentford club crestIt’d be a lot easier to admire them if they weren’t quite so pleased with themselves.
Might have missed one ere gaffer !!!
UTB
Yep they've already doubled their money on him if they want to sell him at XmasLooks good doesnt he.
Just going through a purple patch. Over 160 league appearances already, mostly at league 1 level with a strike rate of 1 in 4. Think that’s his level. Not good enough for the championship never mind the top end of it
tbh i was shut down not once but numerous times for suggesting that he could be a half decent player eventually, granted a little harsh to quote a 2yr old post, but don’t make bold predictions and then sling names about when they turn out to be wrongWow. So you thought you’d be a smug git “told you so” and dig out a quote from almost 2 years ago. If he had been championship material back then he would have been snapped up well before this summer. Glad you satisfied your ego
It was an opinion like everyone else has and is entitled to on here. 99% of which aren’t dragged up 2 years later in a condescending nature. I haven’t been “proven” wrong. A lot can happen in two years.tbh i was shut down not once but numerous times for suggesting that he could be a half decent player eventually, granted a little harsh to quote a 2yr old post, but don’t make bold predictions and then sling names about when they turn out to be wrong
Because, according to SSGB, we offered lower wages than Brentford where SSGB thinks Toney is on >£35k per week.Any ideas why he did not come?
To think we could have signed him for £6m or whatever it was is sickening. I know that's hindsight, but I was surprised we didn't go for him because Wilder knew him from his Northampton days, but maybe there was something Wilder wasn't keen on from knowing him well.West Ham have joined Chelsea and a host of other clubs in the race for Brentford's 25-year-old English striker Ivan Toney, who will cost £35m. (Sun) (from the BBC SPorts website today)
And on Wikipedia, when he moved to Brentford.
"...On 31 August 2020, Toney completed a medical and signed for Championship club Brentford on a five-year deal. The fee was reported to be in the region of £5 million and around £10 million with add-ons, Peterborough's record transfer fee...."
At this point clubs like us might as well just move for whoever Brentford are being linked with. Its staggering how much they get right with their recruitment.West Ham have joined Chelsea and a host of other clubs in the race for Brentford's 25-year-old English striker Ivan Toney, who will cost £35m. Watkins - sold for £30M
Benrahma - sold for £20M
Maupay - sold for £20M
Konsa - sold for £11M
Made £81M on those four players alone, and they're constantly reinvesting in more high potential talent as they have done with Toney. They have by far the best recruitment setup in the EFL and its something we should delve into and look to emulate.
Brentford's scouting costs them a fortune but it pays for itself. Unfortunately it's a proprietary system and it's owned by Matthew Benham. Benrahma was £25m rising to £30m (when the £5m loan fee is included) btw and you can include £13.5m for Chris Mepham too. They're also hot on the Danish market with Benham owning FC Midtjylland. At this point clubs like us might as well just move for whoever Brentford are being linked with. I’ll be interested to see what he does post Brentford I’m a bit cautious of anointing him the next big thing just because of where he’s had success during his career. Showed a lot of promise at a young age like DCL went to the prem failed and dropped back down. Has only had real goal scoring success in an ultra attacking Peterborough side and an ultra attacking Brentford side. He’s unlikely to land in that kind of situation in the prem unless he’s playing for a top side. I’m not saying he can’t make it because maybe he’s a late bloomer and really developed as a player but I think looking purely at production in that Brentford system might give a false impression of what he actually is as a player. To think we could have signed him for £6m or whatever it was is sickening. It looks like one that's got away right now for sure!
Incredible set-up. If they go up, it will be interesting to see how they go about business in the Prem.Brentford's scouting costs them a fortune but it pays for itself. Watkins: £1.8m in (plus 20% sell on), £28m rising to £33m out
Maupay: £1.8m in, £20m out
Konsa: £2.5m in, £12m out
Benrahma: £1.5m in, £30m out
Mepham: £nil in, £13.5m out
It's unreal. Toney and Mbeumo next cabs off the rank.
With the same approach I'd suspect and they'd probably be fine; I'd definitely back them to finish above the unflushable floaters - Brighton/Burnley/Palace/Newcastle. They've also nudged up the amounts they're spending on players: from £2m for Maupay/Watkins to £6m for Mbeumo to £10m (potentially) for Toney.Incredible set-up. If they go up, it will be interesting to see how they go about business in the Prem.
I wanted him last year instead of Brewster, much less of a risk and we could have got that midfielder and defender in also.To think we could have signed him for £6m or whatever it was is sickening. I know that's hindsight, but I was surprised we didn't go for him because Wilder knew him from his Northampton days, but maybe there was something Wilder wasn't keen on from knowing him well.
