We all know if we've had a dog. The time comes when the humane thing to do is hold your dog for the last time as the vet gives it the injection to stop the pain

It's surely time to do the humane thing and put the League Cup to sleep.

Realistically what else can we possibly win? If we survive this season and continue to progress it remains our best chance of winning a trophy. The early rounds are always like this but put a run together. I am 62 and have never seen us win anything that would mean as much as winning this. I was there last night it was rubbish. Hands up on here, how many who think this competition should be scrapped would not attend the final if we got there?

Most teams don't even care about the FA Cup until their reserves stumble to a later round. Its shit younger brother means even less. All last night was taken as was an opportunity to try some lads out and put a few minutes under their belt. It's sad, but the league is so important that even when we were in League One were thinking "Best rest a few".

I couldn't be bothered to go last night because I knew what to expect. And I'm sort of stuck on saying fair enough. Which is why I don't care about it. You only have to look how many teams bow out to lower opposition to see our approach isn't uncommon.

We've come very close to reaching the final twice in the last 20 years and would have gone wild if we had.

The OP wouldn't be saying this if we'd won last night.
If we play Lincoln at home in the FA Cup the attendance will be similar, pretty sure the same thread wouldn't be started about the FA Cup. It's just an attempt at justifying us losing to Lincoln by the OP.

I did feel like a bit of a part timer by not going last night but I knew what to expect. Having this not included in the season ticket didn't help. I know it has always been thus!
Anyway, it went just as expected with a much depleted team playing with the sole intention of not getting injured. It would be sad to see this competition die but it always has been 3rd rate.

Needs a rethink.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Anglo-Scottish cup.
I'd like to see a group stage/knockout style domestic cup which had every team in england who didn't qualify for Europe down to the Championship (in essence the other PL12) + SPL participating.

Inject some proper prize money in, Europa qualification for winners, Europa Conference runner-up, and you could give teams outside the top 8 + SPL a really exciting cup to aim for, replacing the English + Scottish league cups.

I think having the first round or two included in your season ticket isn't a bad idea.

I’m from the age group where FA cup coverage used to start about 8AM with the players being interviewed while having breakfast, and continued until about 9PM when Eric Morecombe would be wheeled out to tell us all how Luton Town were going to win it next year.

Even in this watered down day and age, Just to stand in Wembley wearing a Blades shirt and sing Abide With Me would be enough, if we actually won the fucking thing it would probably finish me off all together.

Strangely, in all that time, the league cup has meant nothing to me, so I’m with the OP on this one, at the very least a format rethink.

I thought you were going to say take the whole club around the back of the shed and shoot it.
It would save a lot of pain over the rest of our lives to just get it over with tbf

It needs a rethink, but in theory it's a cup that doesn't necessarily always get won by the top teams. The fact that we don't take it seriously, or play like we're not taking it seriously is our fault. We're playing a lot less games this season than we did last and will be getting a break at Christmas, we should have a squad capable of beating Lincoln without needing penalties. It's our fault that we have an injured and small squad.

No still all for it. Games like the semi v spurs when we were in league one are worth years of drab campaigns

I get this, I’ve had many memorable league cup nights, but that’s from a fans point of view, from a club stats point of view, having our name on that cup would mean nothing to me. 🤷‍♂️. guess it stems from childhood memories.

Ask top world level managers who won it like pep and Jose etc if they rate it...

Absolutely nowt wrong with the league cup

What has their opinion got to do with it ?

The league cup makes the English pyramid 10x better
They like winning it too ends the nobody cares argument.

Is it the biggest? No of course not but it still holds some value imo

We involve all our four fit strikers, fail to score and call for the competition to be scrapped?

I don't think we can blame the competition for us putting on a lousy performance.

There is no interest in the cup until the later stages, or if a lower league side faces a top premier league side. If Lincoln got drawn to Bolton for example there would be no interest in the game at all!
It's a waste of money, time, resources ect just for a "top 6" team to eventually get a token trophy.
I've always had the opinion there should be only one cup and that is the FA cup where everyone is involved.

With the revamp of the CL from next season - 8 games instead of 6. I can see the European teams coming in later and later OR not at all. I suppose that would mean a team that hasnt made it into Europe would be guaranteed European footy the following season. I just cannot see the EFL binning it off completely.

I wouldn’t !
