It was 60 years ago today …

[Newbury Blade]

April 11, 1966: my late cousin Patrick and I got the bus from Attercliffe Common for my first visit to Bramall Lane. We lost 1-0 to Blackpool. Alan Ball, soon to become a World Cup winner, was playing for the visitors.
I can’t remember much about the game tbh but standing on the Kop under the floodlights was a magical experience, incredibly exciting for an innocent 12 year old, and I was hooked for life. Now here I am, six decades later, on the train from Newbury to Bramall Lane.
I wonder if anyone else here was at that game?

Blades 0 Blackpool 1 (Ball)

In the 1970s my dad told me that the first ever football match I went to was Blades v Blackpool, I asked him what the score was. He paused for a bit before saying "4-1 to United", I could tell he was using guesswork! He then said "You cheered when Blackpool scored!". He had already told me during the 1970 World Cup that he took me to watch Switzerland v Spain at S6 in the 1966 World Cup (I dont have any recollection of going to that match as I was only 4 years old at the time). In the late 1970s my dad told me that he took me to Reserves matches...
