It seems ages ago....

Feeling in a reflective mood, my mind turned to this very memorable away game at Southend, Jan 2017. One of my favourite games in recent years.

The journey south to the end with my young son Tom (13) we parked up near the Crooked Billet, and feasted on cockles, winkles, Welks (a bit chewy) and various other seafood delights from the stall opposite the pub. A few pints of ale later and a cab to the ground my guts were feeling a bit tender.....

The game and atmosphere in an old school ground was memorable.

We played very well, in a cracking game, Caruthers from memory came on and looked so classy. Billy was there, and Baldock scored a cracker. The third goal by Lavery was sublime.

After the game we went into town and had an Italian meal, at a modest family owned restaurant. Lovely. It was a fab day out.

You know, we still talk about his away day from time to time.

Happy days for sure.

How much slimmer do the PL versions of JOC & Fleck look compared to that video?

What I remember is before that game Southend had been in top form and their Manager Phil ”dipped in ronseal“ Brown was talking up them chasing the top two spots down.

We Put down a marker that day that this team was not the bottle jobs we’d seen before in Blades shirts

I remember Phil Thompson was covering our game on Soccer Saturday and was extremely complimentary about our performance when he was summarising after the match eith Jeff Stelling

One of my best friends is a Shrimper and I went to both SUFC v SUFC matches that year, and both times I sat with the 'other' SUFC fans. It wasn't pleasant when we were 3-0 down after 15 minutes at Bramall Lane but the away game was a quality day out.

Thanks for posting this, I went with my three sons and it was a great away day. The fish and chips on the way home tasted amazing! The memories from the Wilder years are incredible, surpassing the Bassett days and I never thought that would happen. Thanks again.
