Is Wilders reputation in danger?

As a top flight manager, there is now a huge question mark over his ability. The best managers learn from their mistakes and are willing to change and he has shown the complete opposite. Refusing to deviate from a system and formation which he used in league 1. Mocking fans who suggest changing it despite losing 23 of the last 28 games. A record I doubt any other manager in the world would have gotten away with.

I suspect next season he starts only slightly up in the credit stakes.

Absolute bullshit

This doesn't apply to you obviously, I'm talking about Sheffield United supporters, not some joyless fucking cretin who materialises like a herpes flare-up when times are rough to spout toxic, doom-laden garbage then slithers back under their stone when things pick up again.

Not to mention names though, perish the thought....

Hi Stegosaurus here,

If, as I expect, we struggle next season. It could be the end of Wilder as manager.

I can't understand people saying they didn't like Bassett's style of football. I thought the idea that Bassett was just a hoof merchant was a myth put out my the lazy football media based on his Wimbledon days but clearly some Blades agree.

Personally, when your team scores 120 goals in all competitions in one season (wasn't it the highest in Europe?), and your front two get 30 goals EACH in that season, employing a style involving overlapping fullbacks and wingers feeding a devastating front two I have to say it was the most attacking and exciting football that no-one had an answer for (apart from one bizarre stat: We only lost 5 games, Southend and Chesterfield both did the double over us, and both got relegated as we went up!)

Post Bassett, Howard Kendall briefly had us playing like Brazil, Spackman's brief flirtation produced some real magic and we did have spells with Wilson and Clough but in general CWAK's football has been great to watch, with a particular favourite being the way we absolutely ripped the piss out of Man Utd for most of the game at BDTBL last season, but Holy Crap have the wheels come off. We're turning up each game rolling out the same old garbage and it's truly depressing.

Chris would restore his reputation in a heartbeat by having a right bloody go at teams for what's left of the season, smiling a lot more, chucking a couple of kids in from time to time and trying to enjoy the thought of building something for next season. Despite what he claimed, he's in danger of going out the back door. Come on Chris, give your head a shake and get this thing going in the right direction again. We want to love you, but we love the Blades more

Bullshit:
Some made up, manufactured, untrue, crap.

Sheffield United are shit, they are a penny pinching, shit organisation that prepares to fail before it's kicked a ball and has failed repeatedly over a hundred years whilst other similar sized clubs have achieved at least something.

They are the facts

You blame our fans and try to make out that they are worse than any others, when you obviously know fuck all about the fans of other clubs.

That is bullshit

If you think any other of the 91 clubs fans would be happy to watch a football team so fucking clueless that their only tactic is to sit deep and launch a long hoof into the other half of the field for 90 minutes then you also know fuck all about human nature as well.

The fact that you're happy with it, and a Sheffield United fan speaks volumes.

I'm glad to be one of those that demands better, shame I'm in the minority, if there were a lot more like me and less gullible clapping seals our club would be forced to give us better.

We lost 12 games - including 6 of the 8 against the relegated teams. As well as the doubles you mention we lost away at Aldershot and Gillingham.

I agree with you re Bassett's football. Much more to it than the media thought, and exciting to boot when things were going well. I accept there were poor periods, though.

Why would he change the system if he thinks the alternatives would be worse? Generally, you play three at the back because your defenders aren’t good enough to play in a two. I think Egan and JOC would probably be a decent pairing but that’s not been an option. Other than that, I’m not convinced.
After the World Cup, Southgate changed from a back three to a back four, so we could get more bodies in midfield but it didn’t really improve the results or performances.
The system worked last season, it worked when we beat Man U. It should only be changed if we have the players capable of playing in a new system. I’m not convinced we have. Nor is Wilder. If he changes the system and it makes us worse, he’ll lose any belief in him that the players still have. Then he’ll have to go.
You can say sticking with the system is stubborn but if he genuinely thinks that by changing it, we’d be worse, not better, then he’d be a fool to change it. And if he changed it because ‘the supporters wanted it’ then he’d be a very weak man.

Blah blah fucking blah.

I knew exactly what your reply was going to be, why? Because you've posted the exact same bollocks for years. Same old shtick.

As a say, when the going is good, you'll soon disappear like a fart in the breeze along with the other doom-mongering lowlifes that taint this club.

Youre no supporter, you never were, nor will you ever be. You don't "demand better", you want it to be worse for all time, so you can have the satisfaction of saying you were right. I've been around your kind my entire life they're ten-a penny round here, I know from whence I speak.

It's not necessary to inflict your malignant bullshit on everybody else just because you can't handle life.

The Wilder support is cult like in some people.

He did an amazing job for the period up to January last year. Then we've had 14 months of barely scoring a goal and watching the defensive solidity that he'd pushed as his trademark completely fall apart. Of course he should be questioned.

He deserves the summer to fix the mess he's created and rebalance the squad for a 46 game slog. But he's not infallible and I think it's fair to say he's been given more leeway than any other manager would have got.

It's not 'cult-like' to suggest that somebody who dragged us out of a hole and put us on a consistent upward trajectory until recently, deserves a bit more faith and trust. He's certainly not infallible nor should he not be questioned, but I see plenty of 'supporters' lined up with knives sharpened, willing him to fail.
If he's had more leeway, it's because he earned it.

Sticking with a system where we've lost 23 of the last 28 games? Sure it's working. Can't be the system. Let's not try anything else. Ever. Despite how many games we lose? I agree, at the moment, it's tricky to look at changes, but we've been abject most of the season. It has been much less successful in terms of creating chances, or getting the wingbacks forward, general defending, scoring goals or retaining possession.

He deserves the opportunity to fix the mess that he's made. We play 3 midfielders and 2 forwards but we have more forwards than midfielders in the squad.

If we stick to the "best players from the Championship" mantra that CW re-emphasised this week I think we'll struggle to get it right.

Imagine 30,000 you's in BDBL

be like a snake pit

We could have stayed up that year with better finishing late in the season. Bassett gave up on Mendonca after a wretched performance in his first home game, which was a mistake as Agana came in but was never fully fit that season. There were a lot of new players and some of them weren’t very good.
Ironically, it probably helped in the long run though. Rebuilding in league two would have been much harder for Bassett. Presumably he accepted his error with Mendonca.

It has but changing it isn’t likely to improve us. Think through the options and then think about what we’d need to make the changes effective. We don’t have two central defenders who can play in a back four. We don’t have a striker who can play in the lone striker role so can you honestly say you think we’d be able to play a 433, a 442, a 4231 or a 541? With the players we have available? We all want to see better performances but changing the formation won’t necessarily lead to that without having the players capable of implementing a new system.

Total bollocks
Continue blaming the fans, if it helps.

If it makes you feel better, go for it. I'll slag the club off if they are to blame for something.

Our fans aren't to blame for anything, they don't expect much, but they do expect and deserve a Premier League footballer that can control and pass a football.
It's not much to ask, but still too much for us apparently

Yeah, this fanbase are precious, delicate little cherubs who shit roses. Not a toxic set of pearl-clutchers at all, no sirrree.

To be fair you can say the system doesn't work when it carried us from league 1 to the prem in record time. The problem is not the system the problem is not having adequate back up players to play the system properly and the complete lack of a creative attacking midfielder. Now we are back in the championship I hope we don't try to persist with a flat 3 in midfield

i just cant understand why a manager with progressive and innovative ideas has been so stubborn with tactics this season when its obviously not working i find it baffling

Not having a go or on the wind up, genuine question.

Why bother? Football fandom is a choice.

Sure there are ups and downs and we all get pissed off, (and I'm not advocating being a fair weather fan or stop being a blade). We all feel the highs and lows and that's part of being a fan, but on balance being a blade is a positive aspect of my life therefore i continue.

However, following something you believe to be inherently a "shit, penny pinching organisation" for its "failed hundred year history" and expecting change, then rage when it doesn't and argue on message boards just won't do you any good.

As i said, not a criticism or wind up. Genuine question.

Isn't this a contradiction? How can you be progressive and innovative, when simultaneously stubborn with your tactics? Surely you're one or the other? So by definition, Wilder has become the latter, after initially being successful as the former.

It's the ability to constantly improve that differentiates the great managers from the average ones, and Wilder is proving himself average like a George Burley, Phil Brown, Paul Jewell, Owen Coyle, Paul Lambert, David Wagner, etc. and outside of SUFC will be remembered as such. What a shame.

Sheffield United's Chris Wilder casts doubt on his Bramall Lane future

Chris Wilder has admitted he does not know if he will be at Sheffield United next season.

It’s the same formation but in no way is it the same mentality.

Look how we set up last season and compare it to this. This season we are so cautious the midfield sits so deep and invites pressure. We have no outlet to the strikers we either end up losing the ball on dangerous areas or smashing it long, total kick and rush football, it’s turgid bollocks

Last season we pressed high forced the opposition into mistakes and got the rewards for it. People can blame injuries all they like but for the majority of the season we’ve had a similar midfield and strike force to last season. We played on the front foot and didn’t fear anybody.

Other than the formation, this is not the same system in that got us from league 1 up into the Premier League. I understand the change to the flat three in the Premier League but the mentality has completely changed this season.

Somethings happened that’s triggered this change, we can speculate all day on what that might be but it’s affected us badly this season. I think not picking up more than a point before that really tough run of games at the start of the season really turned this from a relegation threatened season into an absolutely terrible season. The pressure was on I think to try and make a good start and I think for the first time ever Wilder has tried to play it safe and it has backfired.

It’s a lot of leeway given the shitshow of this season.

Are people for real? In the latest attempt to plug a sinking ship, against the current champions we fielded as our defence, a 20 year old who has 31 senior appearances, a 38 year old who's the oldest outfield player in the league and a player, who prior to this season had never played higher than League 1.

Off the top of my head, during this season, John Fleck has literally suffered a broken back, Sander Berge has torn the ligament away from the bone. Lunny just about turns up half the time, Oli Norwood, a player who chose to retire from International duty, has single headedly gifted half a dozen goals to the opo this year. You think all this through choice and in CWAK's master plan? Get a grip.

It's the perfect storm of a season. What could go wrong has. Transfer's not hitting the ground running, Injuries to SEVERAL key players, utter loss of form for others, not enough quality squad depth due to our rapid rise, no fans, Covid infections. What more does it take for people to see it's an absolute freak of a season. Once again, get a grip.

Depends if he's jumped ship to join another club. It'll all come out eventually I think the board didn't want to spend the cash on the training ground and gave him the push
