Is Wilders reputation in danger?

Wilder & Porterfield identical?

Similar, although Porterfield never managed us in the top tier in his first 200 league games. He finished at United after 215 which would be the first league game of next season for Wilder.

Its not a job of losing it its a job of rebuilding it with his old mojo. The resignation in his demeanour and tone is stark compared to the rest of his seasons here.

And as with our previous owner I start to worry when the owner says he has barely enough money to run one club ,buys another one ?
It feels like flying with a pilot who's wearing his parachute...... 🤐

big first 6/7 games for chris next season hit the ground running and were on our way if we dont i fear the worst for him

His reputation is only in danger in the sense that he's managing a club whose fanbase is dominated by gobby, pitchfork wielding scumbags who will ALWAYS turn on their best eventually.

I wouldnt say he has been turned on, and if he has it is with some justification. Mourinho was turned on at OT, by the players and the fans - deservedly so some would say, bit harsh others given he was in the top 6 and had won cups.

Unfortunately the gods have conspired against us, loosing JoC, Hendo, fans, Covid have all contributed to our current plight

However non of the above sanctioned the purchase of some of our worse value for money buys ever in the close season
Neither did they abandon the 'we have earned the right to play these', & 'we will give anyone a go' attitude for one of 'look at the players they have' & 'we cant compete with their budgets'

CW quite rightly took the plaudits, lapped up the adulation at 'Chris the redeemer' pose on the town hall balcony and carried home the LMA awards

Richly deserved

however he has now preceded over the worse start to a EPL season ever, acknowledged relegation in Feb, will go down bottom, and has to a certain degree brought embarrassment onto our club - I can only thank the footballing gods for the shit storm in S6, imagine how bad it would be if they were in the top 6?!

Sadly for CW, you cant take the pats on the back when its good, then hold your hands up and say 'nowt to do wi me lads' when its shit, and its shit.

Of the 91 other clubs, non wouldnt have pulled the trigger by now, if not December!

He had credit in the bank, its now cashed in - level playing field in the Champ, start well or it may be time to move on, only question will be who blinks first

That’s right just ignore his interview yesterday where he states and I quote “we have all made mistakes including me”.
Why are people determined to just make things up to try and back up their argument? What a bizarre fan base we really have.

McGrath I don’t know where to start with that post. It’s unbelievable we actually have fans who think the way this idiot does.

He’s lying about what you fucking imbecile? Fuck off an lad support one of the top 4 premier league clubs because supporting a team like Sheffield United isn’t for you. Absolute bell end!

When you get your way, you're gonna absolutely love League One. It's amazing losing to the likes have Southend, you just love it.

Jeses wept.

It's as if these idiots have no memory, think the likes of Liverpool are mere walkovers and our squad of journeymen would have been brought up through the leagues by absolutely any fool.

Wilder will be managing Sheffield United next season. I hope you can cope
Spending £120m on a squad of journeymen ? and yes i am preparing for a trips to Stockport just as i did in 81 when the happy clappers welcomed Peters into the club and we'd plunged into div 4. At least he only had Haslam jokers and pennies to spend not more then the whole budget of the entire history of the club.

What you going to do next season?

Sit there and booo yourself senseless until Wilders gone?

I meant the totals

Wilder has undoubtedly done wonders for the club and his achievements will never be forgotten, but yes I think his reputation may be in danger as he is starting to accumulate some unwanted club records ie Worse start to a season, longest winless run, 1st ever defeat at Bramall Lane by a non league side (Barnet F A Cup and god forbid he doesn't equal the lowest points total in Premier league history this season.

Nice one

A fickle thing are the affections of football supporters.

It's certainly been a massive let down after the unexpected success of the previous season. Trouble is, there was never a better time for the club to invest in quality players, the type of player whose calibre, whilst not unquestioned, might have been worth investing in, an example being Cash or Watkins at Villa. I recall we were interested in the players, but our reluctance to pay relatively higher wages was always going to be our downfall. I mean, who'd go to a club that wouldn't offer a wage that was comparable with most mid-table Prem clubs? I appreciate that there has to be a line drawn that says we'll go so far but no further financially, but that begs the question, what was the point of getting to the Premiership if we weren't serious about competing?

So we were left with putting our manager out to dry. The resources offered by our board were, by Prem standards, miserly in comparison. Yes, we bought players at the £20 mil mark, one, Berge, a qualified class act when the mood seemed to take him, the other, Brewster, we seemed to get giddy at the fact that we were buying a Liverpool player. Whatever the reasons that support Brewster's purchase, so far I think it's reasonable to describe his impact as underwhelming. And that just about describes our season, one where very early on, it seemed fair to say we were going under, like a drowning man without the faintest hope of help being offered.

Perspective is needed, we are a club that has little or no aspiration, let alone ambition. It's always been the case, we seem to accept the role of being footballing versions of lambs to the slaughter. We have the barely wealthy owner, a Saudi whose wealth was never going to be enough to make our time in the Prem an exciting affair. Maybe next season we'll achieve promotion, maybe we won't, but I'll support the team no matter what. I just wish we had a better level of financial support to enable our manager to strengthen on terms that we could all recognise as worthy of a club who were serious about being a Prem club.

Don't hold your breath fellow Blades, there are no givens in football. Talk of walking the Championship is beyond misguided. Next season will be the time to strengthen with the addition of quality talent, sadly I've a feeling that hope will be squashed by our board as we add players who aren't even established first team players with their current clubs.
It's certainly been a massive let down after the unexpected success of the previous season.

here is the problem.

the question CW must answer is how do you go from been in contention for Europe, finishing 9th and playing some really good stuff, to been relegated by Feb, playing atrocious football, having spent over £100m in the last 12 months?

His job is to recognise it, and deal with it before it affects the team -

He knew Hendo was going, did he get his replacement right?
Always a concern around injury/suspension at the back, did he bring in good cover?
Lack of goals last season, did he strengthen the front line?
Need cover in the middle, did this work?
Positive front foot attitude 19/20, has he carried that on?

Answers
Ramsdale - NO
Robinson - NO
Brewster - NO
Berge - YES
Attitude - NO

you could even argue the drop off in form of Norwood & Fleck, add to the contract fiasco from Lundstram havent been managed correctly

This in no way detracts from what he has done previously, he will be forever loved for that, but in football, previous success doesnt bring you a life time of immunity

Chris Wilders reputation is not in danger because Chris Wilder will make sure everyone that wants to know understands;

1, how much his hands have been tied this season
2, how we can't compete on transfer fees
3, how we can't compete on wages
4, how he can't name a full bench
5, how crap VAR is
6, how unlucky we have been with injuries
7, how good we are in training
8, how we can't compete with world class stars

Now some of those points may indeed be true but he will leave out anything that could possibly attach responsibility to himself......so don't you worry, Chris Wilder will be fine and I would expect him to take over at Burnley if Dyche takes the Celtic job....
If Wilder gets offered the opportunity to leave this time around for a fairly decent job ie like your example Burnley he 100% takes it.

You can tell he’s not a fan of The Prince, he knows the bad run isn’t coming to an end this season

Er yes......unless you ignore the fact we were relegated first under Basset. :)
Who took over a team doomed at the end of January going down losing a play off against Bristol City then went and built a team in his own image

It’s not so black and white.

Take Warnock....he’s always been a total failure in the Premier League but it’s not damaged his chances of gaining a job
....and is always in demand at Championship level.

Regards Wilder he has a brilliant record in league 1 and 2.
In those two divisions his stock is still very very high....he can basically name his club.

At Championship level...he’s performed brilliantly but it was only 2 seasons.
Suspect he still has a good reputation and will have no problem finding jobs in the Championship.

Like Warnock....it’s in the PL where Wilder‘s reputation has been damaged.
Doubt any PL would be interested in Wilder now.....but there wasn’t that much interest last season either....so little has changed.
This. Unless it's with us, I doubt we'll see much of Chris Wilder at the top level again. Hopefully he doesn't go the way of Paul Jewell and basically disappear off the radar forever. That said, I think Chris would be great on Soccer Saturday if that's the way he wanted to go.

I see him as a newer, more palatable version of Warnock to be honest. No good with money but can polish a turd until in our case this season, they can be polished no more.

I don't hate Wilder or want him out. He has said he has made mistakes and that's fair enough, he doesn't need to say more than that.

However, what I really want is to see he is learning from his mistakes and addressing them and it's this that makes me a little anxious right now.

No. He saved us from languishing in League 1 and got us to 9th in the PL on a shoestring budget relatively.

Who took over a team doomed at the end of January going down losing a play off against Bristol City then went and built a team in his own image
Well yes, but you sound like you’re trying to convince me? I’m a Basset fan.

I do think he has some responsibility for that relegation. It wouldn’t have been the escape of the century had he kept us up.

Err no... Bassett got us up two divisions and in quicker time (back to back)
Agreed but I think he meant he was appointed when we were tn Div 2 therefore only up one as he went down first if you see what I mean.

Whilst it hurts me that we will be relegated it is not the fact that we will be relegated that gives me doubts about Wilder....

Its the way we are going down that concerns me - we are not 'playing proper football the sheff utd way' nor have we got the same mentality that brought us to the top table and gave us huge success.

Something has happened post the Leicester rant - it was never the same after - I don't know what but something - I also think there's something gone off between him and the owner - either this or Wilder is having a complete and utter breakdown.
Absolutely spot on.

How does he get the blame for injuries , budget , stevens , Norwood , lundstam , fleck turning to mush but having to play them cos he has no choice , moose being a complete knob ?
A lot has conspired this season and no one cuts him any slack for it , this is not a pop at the prince btw ... considering his wealth or lack of wealth and covid he’s done what he can !
I think a lot of people cut him a huge amount of slack far more than is justifiable.
He rarely gets blamed by any pundits on TV - last night Roy Keane made a few good points but he wasn't making any criticisms of him, almost the opposite.
Many fans suggest that he has done such an amazing job that not only is he the messiah but no fault attaches to him at all and he should be spared any criticism.
He has been very good for United since he arrived but not this season and as has been pointed out, by ekke287 and no doubt others, the writing was on the wall before the end of last season.
From my time I consider John Harris in his tweed jacket and sensible shoes was the man.
On the assumption he does stay I hope next year he does a great job and we get back. But that is far from certain.
Whatever happens over the next months the problems we have in the team, the club, the structure, scouting, recruitment, finances, training, etc. all need to be addressed. Otherwise, the opportunity to stay in the Premiership, which has this season gone up in smoke, will only ever be fleeting for a season or two at best.

Youve also forgotten a major point.

Wilder's first 200 games will be split across 3 divisions, Harris 2 and Davidson 2. Harris and Davidson spent more time managing in the top flight(s) therefore relatively their results should be 'weighted' to relect this. A result for example against Arsenal is surely better than one against Millwall.....

Personally, I couldn’t give a shit about Wilder’s reputation. If he stays and gets us up again, great, if he ends up like Paul Jewell, that’s his problem, not mine. I’ll be more concerned about how good the next bloke is.

But there's still time to get the maximum worst defeats, home defeats and or away defeats and the lowest goals scored. Yep some great unwanted records to aim for particular when the manager reminds you publicly that you are up against multi-million pound players.

Did Winston say 'The mighty armed forces of the third Reich have proved themselves time and again smashing countries like Poland, Holland Belgium and now France because the German state has re-armed with modern equipment with up to date technology, whilst we are relying on warships built for the last war, old biplanes, old tanks but we have spirit'. Do you expect us to repel the Hun? Of course, but their equipment and numbers of aircraft greatly outnumber our resources'. We shall but give it a go.

Did he fuck.

In his managerial career Wilder has had a pretty good reputation, now he came to us and his "stock" soared 100 fold. Last season and previous seasons he and the players took the plaudits of the fans, now this season seems to be a "perfect storm" of if it can go wrong it will.

Now bad buys coupled with bad luck and injuries has not helped us this season but, also what has not helped is CW's reticence to change the side from 3-5-2 and he doesn't seem to want to change or or hasn't got players to do so. I don't know why buy unsure why won't go 4-3-3 we have nothing to lose now we're down, despite the players coming out and saying "oh we can pull it off".

Mr Wilder is a stubborn old bugger and has been at the heart of our problems but, the players need to take a long hard look in the mirror as they've been appalling.

I'm hoping he can rally both himself and the team and make a bid to return but, the rot is set in ATM and older fans know when it sets in we seem to have the knack of sinking further into mediocrity. We've lost 21 from 26 league games that to me is diabolical and yes, this season we have stunk the PL out and I think every fan was hopeful of at least top 10.

We are going to have to rebuild I'll not name players who we need as opinions differ but, we need JoC back and playing the midfield needs beefing up with someone that can win the ball and perhaps make things happen or even have a bleeding shot.

Our strikers couldn't score in a brothel with a tenner in each lug hole ATM, and their confidence is below on the floor we don't want to be another Sunderland or Huddersfield for that matter. We need to be in this together from CW all the way down to Doreen the char lady, let's hope we can come back like Norwich but it looks increasingly unlikely.

We have to give CW the chance to repair this season's woeful return in addition, there's no one out there to replace him as the decent ones are in a job. By that I mean Pearson, Hughton, McCarthy they are my choices nobody else's but I hope CW can come back from this as his reputation and confidence are also on the floor in bits.

With United fans he’ll no doubt be remembered fondly for the good times with this season being huge negative which will be discussed, but while ever he is still in the job he’s got the cancel to put things right.

On a national level, his reputation is pretty much done, there is no way a Premier League will touch him now.
