With 2 signing last week and a few sure to leave looks to me like DW's first team is taking shape. I have assumed Ched, Quinn and Monty will go however both monty and quinn are in Malta so if they don't i see them in the starting 11. I am guessing at flynn on the right not sure which side he plays and also the front partnership being new.

GK Simmo
RB Lowton
CB Collins
CB Maguire
LB Jean-Francois
RM Flynn
CM Williamson
CM Doyle
LM ??
ST Slew
ST Porter

Subs(7 out of these)
Creswell
Harriott
Philliskirk
Kozluk
Long
Bogdanovic
Tonne
Conneely
Kruk?

I think Lowton might be pushed into midfield this season and I wouldn't be surprised if we lined up with a true 4-3-3.

Any ideas where he played monday?? He was the 2nd name on the list after Simmo so i guessed RB.

I think at the moment we don't have anyone for RB, so I would think it was a bang on balls accurate* assumption.

Its an industry term*

I suppose we will be doing a lot of guessing until after the donny and blackpool games.

What's happened to Connor Brown ? There were rumours that he'd re-signed but hasn't had a mention as far as I'm aware.

I would suspect the real preseason games (i.e. to take them seriously, give us a real idea of shape and tactics) would start next week.

He has been signed on for another year, however keep expectations at a reasonable level. He had a really nasty injury last year and was out for a hell of a lot of it. If he comes back at a similar level I'm sure we might see him make a few appearances this season. But I'm sure he will be eased back in at a sensible level.

id remove collins from that line up and put morgan in there after september time.

we still need another striker and a decent centre mid player - willo will get injured at some point, and a middle partner ship of doyle and mcallister doesnt exactly wet the whistle.

Personally I would wait to see Morgan back at all, before I included him in any lineup. Nasty injury at any age, but I'm not confident he will be back until I see him play.

You've missed out MacAllister

Tønne has started all three friendlies on the left, so looks favourite to start there. McAllister, Doyle and Harriott will fight for the central midfield spot alongside Williamson.

What worries me is the Maguire, Collins duo in front of Simonsen. Simonsen can be a good goalie and maybe Collins can be a decent CB, his record suggests this. But I don't think I have seen a good game with them playing together. Putting them with a lad who is not old enough to buy his own beer (is he 18 yet) is not fair on young Maguire or us.

I would say the squad is forming the same kind of shape as the curry had for my tea yesterday evening

He's probably a lager drinker. Kids today....

The line up is taking shape, but I still feel that any team at any level that contains Collins will struggle defensively because he is simply the weakest link.

DP, I think the squad is starting to take shape. However we are still 3 or 4 players away from it being complete. In post number 199 of my the summer ahead thread (http://www.s24su.com/showthread.php?23675-The-summer-ahead/page10) I stated that I think the squad is getting there but we need a centre back, another wing and possibly a striker. I would argue that all three of these need to have pace.

For me the most important thing is a CB with pace. Maguire is slow and so is Collins. They will struggle against a pacey striker. Morgs and Ertl are both slow too. Lescinle apparently has pace and Lowton is no slouch. But Kozluk and Taylor are slow also. I think we need more pace across the back line. One pacey CB and maybe even another quick defender (in an ideal world).

We need a left winger too. This would be my second priority. Someone atheletic, that can cross a ball and beat his man.

The third addittion that I would like to see Wilson make is another striker. Again someone with pace. Aart from Slew the front line is slow and immobile.

With these addittions I think that we could push for a top 6, maye even top 2 place. In the same motion a these players coming in I would like to see Monty and Ched out of the door. That is for both footballing and financial reasons.

IMO it is not time to get excited yet. There has been no revolution we hoped for. But Wilson has been chipping away and although there is still work to do, I think we could see a reasonable squad has been assembled by the end of August.

Don't disagree, but this is sheffield United so it wouldn't surprise me if we make do. With the amount of minutes collins has had in friendlies i think he will start.

From the line-up in the original post I would expect Cresswell to start when fit. Not saying i think he should, but think Wilson will make him one of the first on the team sheet, at least from the start of the season anyway

It will be interesting to see how his teams line up, whether he goes for the standard 4-4-2 or the 4-3-3 which seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment. He seems to like two wingers so probably 4-4-2 with Cressy and Porter up front, Slew as super sub. Not sure where Philliskirk will fit in although he has featured heavily pre-season.

Wilson favours a four man midfield most of the time if memory serves.

Would be surprised to see us play in a 4-3-3.

Kenilworth, your glass is not half empty/full its broken on the floor with the contents soaking into the carpet :)
go ahead dare to believe.
with an attitude like this in no time at all you will be branded some form of playground named group ie sunshine band etc ;)
at least wait till we fail before you all condemn us to league 2 oblivion.
a fair few of this group of players (at the moment) almost made the playoffs less than 2 seasons ago, im hoping with a decent start a mix of old and new, young and older players will do the trick and put us straight back in the championship.
ok pre season they hardly tore trees up but lets be honest, no one takes much note of pre season anyway its from Oldham onwards that matters.
As an (alleged) hoofball  im kinda hoping to be pleasently surprised by our style of play and the team that plays it.

Have to agree with your thoughts on what appears to be our cb partnership

Calamity Collins together with a prospective decent cb in Maguire, who is only 18 and imo, lacks a little pace.

This at the moment is my biggest concern.

mcallister must be vying for a starting place in the middle with either quinn if he stays,or willo.collins in the back four is like playing with a nail in your foot-no thankyou,lecinel-lowton-maguire-(morgs)-??more back up needed in this department,im sure we`ll be getting someone else in surely.
I find it hard to believe that our squad is finalised with another 2 weeks to go-this is utd were on about.
