Now dont get me wrong, I am a huge Didsy fan, his fitness for a guy of his age is amazing and the tracking back and other defensive duties cannot be questioned.

However my one concern is his conversion rate...Especially in the Premier League where we will only get a select few clear cut chances of scoring.

Now I know he will chip in with a few goals throughout the season and his goal to game ratio since being with us isn't completely terrible (1 goal every 3 games). However it could definitely be better, and last season the amount of good chances for scoring he missed was probably equal with the amount of goals he did score.

In the Premier League we cant afford this...

The main difference between McGoldrick and the likes of McBurnie and Sharp is that when they get a chance they will make sure more often than not the ball ends up in the back of the net any way possible.

So putting it out there...

1) Is McGoldrick clinical enough for the Premier League where our clear cut chances of scoring will be severely reduced?

2) Is playing him in AM a better option?

I think he is as clinical as a lot of Premier League strikers playing for clubs in the league positions we're looking to be in, as in, not a robot.

Think in that 8th down to 17th range anything approaching 10 goals is outstanding, which will mean a few misses if we create chances at the same rate.

He'll have good games, bad games, outstanding games. He's adjusting to the pace and the types of chances being made, since he's already getting in the positions to score, I'd back him to put some away.

As for where you play him, depends on the opposition, but I think Freeman's pace was a big help today in the 10 role, but McG was still great on the ball and rarely gave it away, and that pass to Baldock against Ipswich last game of the season lives long in the memory, he could do a job there I'm sure.

His overall game is fantastic. He’s had 2 half chances and not scored them. But it’s his intelligent play that creates the chances. His record says he will score. He’s no Kane when it comes to finishing but other parts of his game are of an elite standard.

The players that do it all don’t play for teams like us ever!

One game in (ONE) and we get this nonsense.

Sharp was shit too as he only scored one and Robinson should be transported down under as he didn't score at all.

Now dont get me wrong, I am a huge Didsy fan,

Glad you are a huge 'fan' as god knows what you' have posted if you were a hater.

In short - no he's not clinical enough to be an out an out striker in the premier league - he's not dubbed Mcgoaldrought by the wags for nothing

Yes - he'd be fantastic as our AM in many games

I think going forward mcburnie and Robinson will be our first choice front 2 but it’s a long season and McGoldrick and sharp (as we seen yesterday will definitely have a part to play). It’s certainly a good headache to have and this is without taking 10million pound signing mousset into account. Exciting times.

Good post.

This is what the Prem is about.
You have to score them goals.

I also have my concerns around Goldie being clinical enough in front of the sticks. He is a cracking player but not a natural goalscorer imo. That said, he is a very clever player and will do a very good job for us this season.

I can see him playing quite a few games for us this season either as a link man between our midfield and a quicker lad up top i.e. Mr Swiss Family (like today), or he will play in the hole behind a front pairing.

He is one of our many options available that CW has been very clever to accumulate for his disposal. If you listen to CW's recent comments he talks about his forwards all having different attributes which cover a multitude of skills and strengths. Goldie is included in that armoury and he will be a huge asset for us.

More often than not, you have to sacrifice some area in order to be better in others. We probably sacrificed a more natural goalscorer starting today (Billy) for a clever link up forward (Goldie). All our forwards have a tole to play though and it has never been more of a squad game than it is now.

We need him , he's a great player and character , and even if he's not scoring ,its his passing , vision , and clever runs that create openings for others to score . All forwards are going to get used to be on the bench , as the squad will be changed an awful lot this season , the bench was awesome yesterday and so it proved when they all came on , McGoldrick has easy got this season left in him !

OHHHH David McGoldrick !!!

I'm not sure that we will have a first choice. I personally think that Wilder will rotate players and play different forwards and partnerships up top this season, depending on who we are playing and individual fitness. He will intend to use all of the lads up top on a regular basis. He will have them all working together in training in order for them to get a better understanding of the strengths and styles of each of the other forwards. Note his recent comment about how we will get better as a team as the season goes on (and we integrate our new signings).

The days of just having a single partnership of say Deane and Agana throughout the season, have gone. The game has moved on.

It depends ,if you start a thread after he's missed a couple of half chances th then no he isn't clinical enough
If you start a thread after he's scored then yeah maybe he is

Questioning our Player of the Year after one game, in which he played very well. At the back end of last season he was massive for us, he stepped up when the pressure was on and was converting everything.

Yesterday he had two half-chances, which he did brilliantly to create with his own movement, that I'd have been amazed if the Bournemouth lads (amongst the best in the league) would have scored. He actually did really well with the second one, took it early and made a good connection.

He caused Bournemouth trouble with his running and his quality on the ball was still there to see. He is integral to linking our play and needs to stay in the first XI.

As for Sharp's chances, I think he will have to wait & see how well we adapt to the Premier League. If we're comfortable at this level & enjoy plenty of the ball, are able to execute our style and create a lot of good chances - then he may find himself back in the starting XI to finish those chances off. Until we've fully found our feet, I suspect Wilder will play a striker who can offer a little bit more outside of the box. But what a player to have for moments like yesterday. Superb.

Not Sissoko though......
All strikers want to convert the chances but only the very best, well out of our range, will do it on a regular basis
In any event shooting can be practised
And Improved
You can’t train people to have a footballing brain
McGoldrick has that brain and therefore will prove his worth this season

It’s a worthy debate and one I was having after he missed the first one. I know it’s a whole different level of quality but Sterling/ Aguero/ Salah have that chance and you’re 1-0 down. That’s the quality you’re up against in this league.
Mate the three you have mentioned play for probably the two best teams in the world , those three will get 10 to 15 + chances a match where as McGoldrick and the rest of our strikers will be lucky if they get 5 chances a match to score .
We all know when we play those two teams we are going to lose it just a matter how many goal we can keep it down to !!!

If you read the original post it quite clearly states often he wasn't all that clinical last season either (goals vs good chances to score). I was tempted to post this question during pre season but held off. The number of clear cut chances we are going to get this season are going to reduce dramatically so I think it's a valid question to ask.

My thoughts are that if you are relying on Goldie to get you 20 to 25 goals this season then he ain't your man (though he will chip in and score a few).

If though, you are using him to set up others to enable others to score enough goals to help keep us up this season, then he is your man.

He will do a fine job for us this season, and the other lads up top will benefit from having Goldie on the pitch with them.

People often posted threads about this when he missed a few and came up with hilarious nicknames like mcgoaldrought and mcgoalmiss

He won our player of the year

But just out of interest what do you make of Robinson's misses yesterday ? Is he not good enough now either ?

McGoldrick is never going to be clinical because he’s NOT a natural goal scorer, his shots seem to lack power too.

However his hold-up play, passing, awareness/ intelligence and work rate is first class. Think he’s a really good player in more of a “linking” midfield to attack role.
If he was a better finisher and younger than he’d be valued at over 40 million.

Them two chances, from Lunny's passes, may be just the type Mousse will thrive on.
What bit we've seen of him. Quick and with a powerful shot.

We got Didzy last season for free from Ipswich and their fans to a man told us he was injury prone, over the hill, won't score, At end of season I said to one of their fans the 15 goals he scored for us helped take us up, they could have helped you stay up bet you feel silly now. We're one game in people should look at the fact he creates the space, the goals to help us will come, the lad owes us nothing we owe him a debt of gratitude.

I reckon if Robinson had been a little more aware, he'd have scored after McGoldrick's first shot.

Irrelevant to the point I’m making. This league ‘golden’ chances are few and far between, we’ve got to take the ones we get.

Look at Sharp yesterday, one chance and goal. Maupay for Brighton yesterday exactly the same they don’t play for the best teams. McGoldricks hold up play yesterday was top quality though.

Simple answer is probably not. I know injuries have plagued his career but he's never been a prolific goalscorer. There's a reason why the bulk of our spending has been on attacking options. Robinson's obviously talented and you can't imagine that McBurnie and Mousset have been signed as back up for what he already had. All that aside, he did well yesterday and got in behind the opposition twice. He's a good player and if it weren't for fitness he'd have had a shot at Premier League football a long time ago.

From what I saw David McG's performance showed great promise, all from a player we signed on a 'free', and what a bargain he's turned out to be.

The runs, his awareness of play around him, and his general football intelligence are exceptional, so any misgivings any Blade might have should be deposited in the deepest hole you can find. Like any player we have, he has to earn the right to be selected, but I'm a fan based purely on McG's quality of play, which is consistently high and will serve us well this season.

Not as clinical as the McBurnie who fluffed his lines and we fortunately Sharp on hand to stick it in...

Not a knocking of Mcburnie btw just an example that strikers do miss chances. Unless they're called Billy Sharp.

Sometimes I wonder if people just read the title of posts and assume its a hate post.

All of the above mentioned talents are why I said I am a fan of his and he is beneficial to the team as a whole.

Not once did i say he should be dropped. Merely suggested that his finishing might not be good enough for those golden opportunities we will get few of and suggested maybe playing him in AM behind players who might be more likely to make those chances count.
