Am I the only one that is quite happy to see us limp along under the radar into the playoffs?

There will be tremendous pressure for everyone in the playoffs, none more so than for the team that comes third. Personally, if we couldn't make automatic promotion, then I'm perfectly happy with coming in 4th or 5th.

I believe it will lower the massive expectations of the fans and the players have a chance to pleasantly surprise.

Just because we are big fish in a small pond, it doesn't give us automatic rights to win it, anymore than it gives Manure automatic rights to the PL. All players will have to pull in the same direction and earn it. We may just do it with less pressure as we seem to save our best for the teams above us, which in turn, tells me, that we are a good side when expectations are lower.

Expectations will be very high if we get into the play offs, I can see there being massive pressure on us to do well
We are not in good form and the players lack confidence, we need to hit a good run of form very soon and carry it into the play offs with us (if we get there)

There's a difference between 'under the radar' and finishing 4th or 5th because we've not been capable of coping with the likes of Fleetwood at home.

We are more than capable of beating anyone in this division, the problem is, we don't seem to believe it ourselves anymore.

Would have preferred automatic but the playoffs are our back door to the Championship, said all along we play our best football when we have a full house and the fans are at full voice, bring it on.

I am totally with you Going Up but the Moron element that seems to be ever increasing within our ranks seem to be of the Man Ure mentality that we just have to turn up and all our opponents will let us win !
I think that's unfair. The moron element is constant. Those expecting a club of our resource and support to take games by the scruff of the neck are increasing.

Have we really stooped so low that your expectations are being surpassed?

This season has been a complete bore fest. The fans have been really patient given the utter crap served up most weeks.

"The fans"? Not this one. Myself and Foulkes Jr Sr have enjoyed almost all of what we've seen. Especially Saturday.

Theres big holes in the whingers case , we have not been dreadful all season Ive seen us play some of the best football in years, our win over southampton is light years ahead of anything we produced in 3 years
the other argument about its the longest ever outside the championship is wrong we dropped in in 76 and got out 2 years later , but into div 4 and took another 3 years to get back into the championship so were out for 5 years

As a team finishing 3rd you go into the playoffs feeling pissed off and hard done to, 5th or 6th is like blagging your way in, nothing to lose. You shouldn't be in the position of getting promoted but you've found yourself there somehow and the team in second are 10 or 15 points in front which now means nothing. It might be to our advantage, that's what I'd be telling the players

That's over thirty years ago

The whole case for some fans who said they didn't mind the Blades going down into the third was that then the club would have the chance to change the culture of long ball and build a young team playing passing football that would take us back up through the Championship and into the Premiership all the time growing together., and I even believe at the time Nottingham forest was their Icon..
Sounds daft now I know but it was the dream back then, and from the kind of football he has achieved these last couple of seasons all be it spasmodic at times, I think if he can get the right blend of players together with a bit of luck, Nigel is the man that could make that dream come true....
.

Seriously, don't you enjoy going to watch the Blades? Why go, if not.
I absolutely love it, always have, and always will. The percentage that the 90 minutes of game time adds to my day is variable. Right now, it's almost down there with the worst I've seen. It's just not a style I enjoy, watching so much play with our back to goal, then aimless punts up field (to be fair, I think this is a sign that Clough is trying to address the negativity). I am honestly stunned that anyone would enjoy this style of football.

I'm not a constant moaner. I try and remain consistent in my view, not blow in the wind, and describe exactly what I see. Right now it's rubbish and it pains me. I gain nothing from seeing it or stating it. I share the suspicion that there's a few who will do nothing other than moan about whatever we do. I've tackled this on many occasions.

I was thinking about this recently, I can't remember us being that team that hits form at the right moment and sneaks into the play-offs. Obviously, we are in the top-6 already, but the points difference makes it feel a bit different. If we hit form now and cement our play-off place it could be quite a contrast to previous seasons:

  • 2003 - steady in 3rd for a long period of the season
  • 2009 - In and out of top 2, missing out on auto
  • 2012 - Missed out on auto
  • 2013 - dreadful form, slipping down the table.

That missing out on auto feeling should be well out of our systems by the time the play offs start.

I've expressed my thoughts terribly here. Like the ramblings of a mad man. I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

Glad to read that Alco! Let's us both hope our team can get that "enjoyment" percentage back up.

But innit a game of opinions or do only yours count ?

What like we did against Yeovil?

Fair play. But seriously, wow.

This is how we saw Saturday's game:

I loved pretty much everything about the match today.

It looked to me like there's been a co-ordinated and concerted effort to be positive:
  • Phipps was in our stand talking to supporters down the front and then walked his way around the ground stopping off to chat with fans all the way round
  • Doyle on the bench - no criticism of him at all, but to me a sign of our intent
  • The players seemed to make a point of applauding the fans before and after the game
  • The first half hour was as good as I've seen us play in the League this season: we passed quickly, moved the ball around, got it forward, pressed the opposition, all we needed was a goal, and then Baxter stepped up
  • We either went off the boil or deliberately retreated after that
  • We scored a fantastic disallowed goal :)
  • For me Holt, Davies, Baxter, and Basham had very good games
It wasn't perfect, and there were things that could have been done better, but myself and Foulkes Jr Sr thought it was the best performance we'd seen this season, apart from Southampton.

To that I'd add the half-time freestyler.

The main thing I'd change (and this seems to be the biggest gripe for a lot of fans) is that when we scored we should have pressed on to get 2 or 3 bc I think we could have.

I don't think we necessarily go negative, but I do think we go counterattacking.

To be honest, I thought the first half was OK. I've grown weary of watching us shit ourselves against clubs like Port Vale, and it tends to cloud my overall judgement.

There's a definite sense of entitlement in some quarters.

Absolutely not. In the face of utter negativity from Clough and co., I think the crowd are just worn down and expect very little.

Tonight's Football Heaven showed this. Clough was 'happy' that we narrowly beat a poor Port Vale side. Lee Johnson (Barnsley manager) was 'upset at only getting a draw with Preston. Of course we're upset. We want to win every game.'

Did you really enjoy Saturday v Port Vale?

I watched Port Vale dominate our midfield in the 2nd half (with MB, a 38 year old, pulling the strings for them) and thought............why.

Didn't enjoy us v P'boro - again, they dominated our midfield - didn't enjoy F'wood either - 2 quick goals and they just shut up shop and all we did was huff and puff.

Just too many poor performances at home - we seem more suited to playing away - just find it hard to enjoy games but it doesn't stop me going and feeling excited BEFORE a new game starts - just disappointed by the end.

As for tomorrow, Tuesday morning means a hard graft doing IT during the day, but going to the Lane will get me going again........all part of being a Blade I suppose.......and as our anthem says at the end...." come thrill me again"...........YES PLEASE :)

In the face of utter negativity from Clough and co

In my eyes the club could not have done much more than they did on Saturday to be positive.

It's frankly astounding to me that they can be accused of negativity. They didn't push on to get two or three - that would be my one reservation.

the crowd

Some of the crowd.

Clough was 'happy' that we narrowly beat a poor Port Vale side. Lee Johnson (Barnsley manager) was 'upset at only getting a draw with Preston. Of course we're upset. We want to win every game.'

1-0 doesn't make it narrow. To me it was probably more convincing than 4-1 against Colchester when I was never really convinced we'd hold on till somewhere near the end.

From what I've heard he was happy to get a win and a clean sheet, and a few other things. Not a narrow victory against a poor team.

We want to win every game. It's just a greeting card platitude. It might show an allegedly positive mindset, but there are alternative more considered approaches.

Those aren't the words.
