Is it just me that's not bothered about Murphy?

Far too weak and too many games passed him by for me. He was great on his day but I don't think you can rely on him to get us out of the league. I would much rather have Adams in that position and if the money is used to strengthen other areas then it's a good deal for the club.

So far this season/pre season I have only been to Macclesfield, Morecambe and yesterday. In which he appeared in none of those games and I had actually forgotten that we had him!

My thoughts are he went from being one of best in division to very average much too often. Great player on his day though, but something that we couldn't guarantee. Hopefully Woolford/Adams is going to be good enough replacements

Nope, looking how the team played yesterday going forward and like you said strengthen other areas.... I ain't bothered.

No. Inevitable in this division and good business if it funds Che's increased wage demands.

After the incredible reaction that "the club" or "board" had sold Murphy and news broke that Murphy had put in a written transfer request ,we should try and move on. if Murph wants to play for Scotland, then great. The fact that SUFC, languishing in the 3rd tier couldn't help him then it is our loss, but we have been adequately compensated.
If Clough had taken us up, we would still have Murphy - we are partly to blame.

Let the kid move on, I for one wish him luck, would loudly applaud his FIRST appearance back at the lane and look forward to a BETTER player playing down the left flank. Adams has more to offer and will look forward to seeing for a few years before a Premier league club pay millions for him.

Good Luck Murphy - but you need to step up your game in that division.

A bit rich. He wasn't player of the year for nowt!

But no point moping about it. He's gone & that's that. And yesterday was seriously promising up front, with the Billy-Fish-Che combo.

And Che's become a beast (a raw beast, but a beast none the less) - really exciting to consider what he could do for us this season.
Did his defensive job in a disciplined way too, yesterday.

I would have rather some of the more average players shipped out, but I'm really not that annoyed about it. Yes, on his day he was very good. Unfortunately that day only seemed to be once a month. The rest of the time he was in the average (often Nesh) bracket.
That's probably why he was with us in league one. Very good players who are consistently very good, play at higher levels than us.
Good luck and goodbye Jamie. The first goal you score for Brighton will have people spewing about how we have again sold the best thing since sliced bread. Those same people won't be so quick to wax lyrical about your 6/10 performances the rest of the time.
To put him alongside Deano, Fjortoft, Beattie etc is absurd. All things are relative but even so, not such a huge loss.

You can't just have one good winger. Having Murphy and Adams means teams would struggle to double up and it's harder for midfielders to come across and help as they have both wings to think about. Murphy would have loved that space in the 2nd half. We have to replace that as a matter of urgency, however I think Adkins likes JCR so it might be done in house.

I wouldn't say 'I'm not bothered' but in Adkin's preferred 4-4-2/4-3-3 I'm not that sure Murphy would have been as effective...in Clough's system we relied too much on Murphy ( or someone, to produce a bit of magic to get a goal) hopefully we'll be more robust and create more chances this year, Brighton should suit his game better.

Murphy may well suit the Championship better also!

Think you are right here - we will create more chances as Billy and Fish are a cut above and their extra talent showed yesterday. We seemed to go a bit long at times but that kept Chezzer guessing.

Our formation looks as though it will be a more open game, possibly better to watch which puts more emphasis on the defence. This looked much better and more balanced - just need them to play a few more yards up the pitch - that way teams will have less to operate in midfield.

As for Murphy, he might do better one level up - he was doubled up on a lot last season - but so was Adams yesterday at times. What I liked with Adams was when he got one on one, there was only one intension in his mind - use his pace. Great to see.

Not sure the defence can play higher up the pitch with Collins, think it's a case of 'batten down the hatches at the moment!...hopefully we'll get two or three more in, get some of the injured players back and start playing better, pushing up the pitch and creating lots of chances!

UTB!

P.s- I heard Russel Slade talking after Cardiff's game and he stated they've got 38 players! And while he'd like to bring some in, and keep his best players, it's a bit tricky...guess Adkin's is in a similar situation...

yep - Collins pace could be an issue and not yet sure how quick/slow Edgar is yet. It was quite noticeable at times how far up the pitch Freeman and Mceveley were when Howard had the ball - on the half way line. Very interesting tactics from Adkins and co.

We have to solve midfield - over run in 2.5 games out of 3 - this won't be lost on Adkins and I suppose defence has been the main focus since Gillingham.
We have made progress in a week which is good to see.
We move on............

I'm bothered. One of the best ways of getting out of League One is to have in your side players who are Championship standard and Murphy is. Yes, he could be frustrating and go missing from time to time and occasionally he could look a bit "nesh" - an accusation that was levelled at Alan Woodward more than once during his career - but he was a genuinely creative winger, good goalscorer and with plenty of assists to his credit.

The opposition wouldn't be able to "double up" on him if they had other genuine threats to deal with and Murphy would have relished Sammon, Sharp and Adams stepping up to the plate like they did yesterday and it would have taken some of the burden off him.

It's done now, anyway. Let's just hope Adams doesn't miss any of the coming games with "flu".

Yep, agree re: midfield.
Mentioned this on another thread but the Bash/Baxter middle isn't quite working yet is it?
Decent players but not the right players together to do this job?

Who knows, maybe they'll work on it and sort it out.?

Maybe Murphy leaving the club could turn out better for us, like everyone keeps saying he was hit and miss, not the strongest player, if we replace him with a player who is strong on the ball and can run at defenders creating chances for our forwards and midfield then I would be happy with that.

Have said that when posters were talking about selling our best players ie Done and Murphy, I have always maintained that we keep Done. Reasons for Murphy going have been well documented on here and by your post, but in the main he wasn't consistent enough. Done however I see as a different matter. Works tremendously hard, scores goals and his performances seem to be more consistent. Just unfortunate he's bloody injured

We can't afford to carry anyone in the team if we want to get out of this division. As good as Murphy is on his day, those days recently weren't often enough

Problem with Murphy is often we became one-dimensional and relied on him too heavily, if he had a bad game our options up front were lacking. He got marked out of games way too often. Amazing player and we have lost an asset but we do not need him in any way shape or form.

Player of the Year for a reason <insert joke about Baxter being joint player of the year>.

But it was out of our hands. I think we've got the best manager we could have and a few bob to improve the team/squad/group.

Work in progress, but it really is progress.

It'd be great to see Murphy playing for Scotland, but I wonder how realistic that is.

NA gave a great interview yesterday. He had a praise and a grumble! He acknowledged straight away that we were a work in progress (it couldn't be otherwise, really) and that he wanted better. I have complete confidence in him. There's a definite plan of action and you can see the beginnings of what he wants. It will take time but good and exciting things ahead....

Note of caution - I said something similar about Weir....

Well if Stevie May can?....... :)

At least Adkins, unlike Weir, has a proven track record.

I honestly think we should give him time to mould the team how he wants and I don't think we should be calling for his head if he doesn't deliver promotion this season. I'd be happy if we just played with more intent and positivity than last season. There are a number of players on 2 or 3 year contracts, so it could take time to make the changes Adkins wants. So I definitely agree it's a work in progress.

no it isn't quit working. What is interesting is that I would think we all see a more balanced defence (at long last) we now move on to other areas where there are issues. I don't dislike Baxter and he has a roll. We signed him as a forward and is being asked to do a job that I think is a bit beyond his stamina levels. As for Basham, I liked his box to box last year and in a 5 you can release players to do this. He is now been asked to be more static which again appears to be taking time to adjust to. He might actually not be able to adjust - time will tell.
For me we have to find a space for Wallace - he is the man if he can hold form and fitness - both attributes that appear well within him, but we have yet to see.

The great thing about Wallace is that he is also a game manager. There is a leader in him who marshall is troops when out of position. I don't think Basham or Baxter have this in their game. I think Basham probably could only blossom in this position with a game manager along side him.

Indeed he can be. I can understand him being a bit tentative especially after losing a couple of years to injury. His fitness will get better and then the confidence returns and hopefully he will be the puppet master.

Am sure it is something we all wish for.

If you want to build a team for the future. Bring in talent who play a nice tippy tippy style of football.
Then Murphy is a good addition, the boy clearly has talent and on his day is a match winner.

However I question Murphys mentality, he's not a leader and when our team was playing poorly he tended to disappear. He's also very much a confidence player who needs treating well by his manager. Remember he's been very ordinary in the 1st half of both his seasons but then showed his class and hit form in the 2nd half of both seasons.

The problem I see is that getting promotion from league 1 takes know how and can be a scrap.
The limited Connor Sammon is someone who is much more effective in a scrap compared to the light weight Murphy.

It's never good to lose a talented player but if we get good money then there is some logic in accepting the bid. Time will tell if it proves to be a shrewd piecce of business that progresses the club.

Put it this way I'd much rather lose Murphy instead of Adams mainly due to improved physicality that's needed to get out of league 1.

Exactly saw him on the left flank yesterday n he worked well with sammon as well especially in his second goal

To be fair or is it fare, he was player of the season in a squad of under performing shitters. Apart from one or two.

We're all hoping that Wallace will be 'the one' to boss midfield, but given his injury record can we afford to wait and see whether he can keep it together and get up to full fitness for a whole season?

I'm not so sure, big gamble for me in an important area...
