Ok I know this is a broad question and there isn't a 'one size fits all' answer, though watching tonight does make me wonder what our approach should be with the current crop.

Would our youngsters develop more and contribute more to us being around the first-team set up, getting the odd game here and there, or is it better that they go to league one and start 30+ games and come back when they are clearly ready for first team football?

I'd err towards the latter, though we don't have the squad numbers at present of course. It will be a long season and wary of relying on younger players too much when we're trying to get promotion, there is a lot of pressure, and unfair pressure with that if they are not ready for it.

Fantastic display from several of them tonight though of course⭐

Marsh, Hampson, One out on loan. I like Marsh, but just needs to get some time playing regularly, don’t think he’s there just yet.

Boyes did well, but does he want to go out on loan again? I think he should personally go if he’s not in Wilder’s plans.

Peck and Seriki need to be around the squad, will improve. Predict they will get minutes.

It obviously depends on just how much minutes they would get with us. I just don't think you can beat playing competitive games. Going to the right clubs at the right time is important too.

Without having anything to back this up I would imagine the number of players who break into a team in the top two divisions following successful loans is more than those who come straight into the team from the academies.

As said, a bit of both....

Marsh, Hampson, One and maybe a couple of others will benefit from regular minutes elsewhere. You would think league one would be a good fit.

We need bulk and numbers..... Peck, Seriki and Brooks have given the gaffer food for thought over the last few weeks.

A really good dilemma to be in when we are undergoing to transition that we are. Players have left the club and the numbers have been low, but they have jumped into the mix and have shown their worth.

Depends how many more we can bring in.

I'd want to keep Peck around possibly Seriki. I think the other lads need a loan out.

Keep: Seriki, Peck, Brooks, Marsh.

Loans for the rest if we find the right clubs?

Seriki, Peck and Marsh have had loan spells that weren't really successful, but they returned to the U21s and are now on the fringes of the first team. Were the loans valuable lessons, or a waste of time?

I think we need to keep the majority of them around the squad - you're not going to play them all at once, but you want them able to step in as a sub or starter

I'd prefer to keep at least Seriki, Peck and Marsh with us for this season. Brooks is non-negotiable for me to be a part of the squad this season with regular minutes.

We've never had the best record with injuries and if Harmer, O'Hare or Arblaster get knocks or fatigued in a long Championship season, these are players that can step in quite comfortably for a few games. Trade off of regular minutes but I don't see why we don't continue to give the younger lads a good 60 minutes for the cup runs and step in where required in league games.

Boyes, One, Faxton, Blacker could probably do with a loan.

No point loaning out players who are actually going to get proper game time with us. From what I've seen, Seriki might not be ready to play 46 games but he'll be genuinely competing for a shirt. Based on tonight, Peck's only problem is that our midfield is the strongest part of the team in quality and numbers. Still, I expect those two to get time on the pitch and possibly if they keep it up or injuries/suspension go their way actually start some matches. Any of the others would probably be better off on loan, but not sure we have the depth to allow it.

Depends on the player.

Marsh- huge potential. However not consistent enough with the ball. Needs games, and won’t get them much here in the league. Loan

Hampson- as above, especially with JRS landing.

Peck- Stay and get game time here

Boyle- RND back a problem for him but didn’t look out of it. But needs games- Loan

One- If we get another striker in he can make up the four, but I think we need 2. So see what we get in.

I think/hope One will be a big player for us in the future but he's only 18 so a season playing mesters football would do him a world of good, the same for hampson and boyes

Entirely needs to be done on a case by case basis. Some should be in and around the first team squad. Some have players ahead of them in the queue and need game time. Some would develop better getting minutes in our age group setups. Some would develop better getting first team football at a lower level. It depends, in every case

Better to be working with Wilder and his coaching staff. This isn’t the first time turning water to wine.

We will need some of these younger players as both Hamer, Souza and Anel could be on their way if The Prince has ihis way

Keep: Seriki, Peck, Brooks, Marsh.

Could be either, we'll never know. I doubt that had they stayed, they'd have got any minutes with us though. Perhaps training with the 1st team would have been more valuable as well.

Peck should be starting games soon

Seriki should stay, he seems to have put his game together quite significantly in the last year or so

Brooks will obviously play a lot

I think Marsh should stay

The rest can have loans

Peck and Seriki need to be around the squad
These 2 need to stay here.

Marsh and Hampson id maybe say a higher L1 club, if no lower Champ will take them.

Boyes. Maybe it's time to sell? Not saying he's not going to be good, but he's behind Burrows (~same age), McCallum and RND.
Sell him but insert a sell on and maybe a buy-back

^^ what he said^^

Not voted as the answer is , it depends.

Great to see 4/5 lads making an impact on the squad at this level. Some others need to go out to learn.

It all depends on how well they've progressed in the development team. The standard in the development team is akin to high end National League and lower to mid-table League Two, hence why so many of our academy prospects go out to these divisions. When we were in League One it was easier for them to close the gap in demand to make the first team. To make the jump from the development team to the Championship or Premier League is something else entirely.

A player like Marsh is too good for the development team and would probably benefit more from a loan. He's keeping match fit in development games but not playing for the senior team. Arguably he's gaining nothing from staying around the first team and a loan move to League One would probably have been better for him.

Even then where they go makes a huge difference. Sam Curtis has gone to Peterborough who rely on youth and play fast attacking football, committing numbers forward. He's a good fit for them.

Marsh plays like Didsy where he drops back, links up and can score goals. Send him to a team that just cross the ball or lump it up top long ball and he'll struggle as that's not his game.

A good manager changes the system to suit the player, not ask the player to change the way they play to suit the system.

^Good point about Marsh and Curtis. Were you the one who mentioned One’s experience at Scottish clubs already? He certainly looks the part despite his tender years.

The development league isn’t anywhere near league standard & even say probably below the National League if I’m honest so it’s a hell of a gap between that and the Championship.
I’ve said for a while kids playing against kids still while still in their late teens / early 20s doesn’t help develop them at all , the missing link was when they got rid of the Central League , a very competitive reserve league with the sides at the top end very very good experienced pros and a proper stepping stone & learning environment for the youngsters coming through but still under bathe watchful eye of the club without loaning them out .
At some point you have to adapt your game around the players you are coming up against in order to develop , there will always be an opponent that is bigger / faster / more experienced than you and have to learn how to combat that develop your game .. Having played at a decent level myself as youngster we were playing against men at 17 / 18 years old and boy did that give you a wake up call .. but made you a better player & you grew up & learned a lot quicker.
For me in our current situation where we are light on depth we definitely need the likes of Peck , Brooks , Seriki & Marsh in or around the squad , as they’re young they will have good / not so good games while they are learning their trade as we’ve seen with Arblaster too but they will develop quicker .. if we had a stronger squad I’d definitely be advocating loaning them out in order to speed up their development .. obvs Arblaster being the exception in there . Still very good to see we appear to consistently bringing our young und through , if you look across the city it’s the complete opposite ⚔️

I did. It's one of the reasons why Ndiaye settled so quickly as he'd been playing for Boreham Wood before we signed him. He had experience of playing meaningful matches prior to joining us.

I have some concerns that Marsh could miss out if he is a nominated squad player, but only getting more games at Acadamy level.
As you pointed out, he needs a well tailored loan, or perhaps first team exposure from the bench?

At the moment, he is getting neither.

Initially voted for “keep them around” but now we’re seemingly well stocked (outside CB) I’d look to get the likes of oné, marsh, blacker and Baptiste out on loan for the next six months with a view to see where they and ourselves are at. Development football will do nothing for them now, and it makes more sense to send them to play “mans” football.
