Jags tonight will captain England who else, if anyone has been a part of our youth system and captained England?

Has any SUFC youth product ever captained a full international team, never mind England? I'd suggest not.

We've had a few players that have captained their countries while at the Lane - Nudger, Billy Gillespie, Rob Page, Nuddy, perhaps Shaun Murphy and Edgar if we include loanees, but as far as I know we've not had any from our youth system.

Anyway congratulations Jaggers, if only United had kept to their word when they originally opened the academy (and before anyone suggests I know Jagielka was before the academy) and built a team of our own youngsters (instead of flogging them off at the first hint of a bid). I'm pretty sure if we'd have kept them all we wouldn't be in the mess we're in now.

Either he made his first team debut at aged 15 or he played in some kind of system we have at the Lane predominantly for youths.

It can't be the Academy Pete because we have been reliably informed over the years on Bladesmad that its failing and now on here that it's just a waste of money.

Ernest Needham captained England and he debuted for us when he was about 16.

I see Silent Blade's been on the case, but just to add detail - from Wikipedia:

Ernest 'Nudger' Needham (21 January 1873 – 8 March 1936) was an English footballer and cricketer. He played football 14 times for England and captained the side in 1901.

He was an outstanding left half who played for Sheffield United from 1891 until 1910. He was instrumental in their promotion campaign of 1892–93 and then captained their team from 1895 to 1905. Under his captaincy, United won the Football League First Division in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899 and 1902.

Early career
Needham was born at Whittington Moor, Chesterfield. Having previously played as a forward for Waverley F.C. and Staveley Wanderers, Needham agreed to sign for United when they met his club, Staveley Town on 10 February 1891.

Sheffield United
He made his debut for the Blades on 5 September 1891, in a pre-season game against Woolwich Arsenal.

Yes it is especially since the EPPP came into force a few years ago. Think of the money we could save so that we can buy new players

Any money saved would go somewhere... But it certainly wouldn't be on new players, t'would be heading Belgium way.

No he joined us from Staveley Town when he was 18

Thought he'd come from somewhere in north Derbyshire. I'd also question whether United would have had a youth set up in 1891. I know they had the Strollers for the reserves but does anyone know when we started with a youth system?

after WW2 I think

Cheers Silent, I'd got it in my head it was after WWII , I think the England youth system started at that time as well.

The first FA Youth Cup was in 1952-53. I wish the Youth set up was like in the 1950s , 1960s, 1970s etc (we had so many that went through the ranks) which was much cheaper to run and less "stealing of youth players" by big clubs rather than the costly academies of nowadays and "stealing" by big clubs due to the EPPP

The academy. How much free cash per season could we be spending on players?
How much are the running costs of the Academy? Do you know? It isnt cheap. I would only keep the u21s team as the EPPP ruling doesnt affect the u21s. I would keep the Shirecliffe centre and maximise the income by running it as if it is a sports centre (the first team and the u21s have the priority to the training facilities). It is worth having an Academy only if you are in Category 1 AND if our 1st team are in the Premier League

But don't you think producing our own players will help us to achieve that aim?
Because we sure as hell aren't buying them.

Not as rubbish as the suggestion of getting rid of the academey.
We have had the Academy since 2001 and since then we have had only one season in the PL, 9 seasons in the championship and this season is our 5th in the League 1. The idea of having an academy was to have good young players to get into the 1st team and us to have more seasons in the PL. It hasnt really worked and we still keep signing young players from the PL or from the Championship

we have had it for 14 years, we have had a few good players that came through the ranks (we now will have less because of the EPPP) and the 1st team arent having much success and we are still signing young players from the PL or the Championships

The academy isn't the reason we are no longer in the premier league.
And our entire squad was never going to be made up of youth players.
No ones is.
Everyone buys young players.

Dont you admit the EPPP has affected our Academy a lot?

Just stumbled across this thread... So what do people suggest we do with the Academy facility then? Sell it to Wednesday?
