Is Bramall Lane the oldest stadium?

The oldest stadium in the world where the oldest part of the stadium was built in 1973 (I think)

And one of the newest parts of the stadium is about as ramshackle as it gets

It's the oldest professional football ground that McCabe has in his property portfolio.

Its exactly the same plot of land as it was when originally built.

No it's not.

Sheffield United started claiming this a few years ago - and it was true back then, because Mansfield Town FC were not in the professional football league. But since they got back into the professional league it is no longer correct. That doesn't stop us keep announcing it though. And I suppose if you repeat something enough times people accept it without questioning it.

Mansfield Town's ground, "Field Mill", is the oldest professional football stadium in the world.

Oh no it isn't.

how can field mill be considered as it wasnt a league ground till after mansfield town were formed
bramall lane has been in constant use since the football league was formed in 1892
the first league wasnt played at field mill was 1919 -20 season
27 years of being non league discounts it

Just to add to the mix, I read somewhere that the first ever recorded game of football was between Bents Green and Norton, presumably played somewhere between the two suburbs? Maybe bottom end of London Road? Whether professional or not I seem to remember there were one or two deaths and free beer at the end of the game. Is that classed as professional? By the way, I stand to be shot down thoroughly by those with more knowledge!

Read an article that stated Sheffield rules football was played at Bramall lane c1858
because it's not been ratified,or records don't now exist,it isn't in the record books

if its the oldest professional ground in use surely its the ground thats hosted league football the longest
not one that started playing league football after world war 1

forest green rovers play on a football pitch thats probably been there since 1850 , but it really cant claim to be an old league ground

It is complicated, I think the most older grounds can make a claim for earlier sports, but for continuous use professionally, Yorkshire being there from 1855, Bramall Lane probably wins out.
No-one ever brings up the MCG. Built in 1853 it pre-dates Bramall Lane. The statement is "oldest professional sports stadium" so I don't know why that wouldn't hold the title.

My definition of a 'stadium' would be an enclosed arena.
According to Mansfield Town: The First 100 Years (The Official History), by Jack Retter with Paul Taylor, Glen Publications, 1997, "So from 1861 when the ground was basically a field with a cricket pavilion (which the footballers were not allowed to use) the mill field has been used for football and has, certainly since Mansfield Town took up residence after the Great War, been developed into a modern stadium".
I'd be interested to know when the Lane became an enclosed arena.

Maidenhead Uniteds York Road ground lays its claim..

Notice the bit "continuously used by the same club'.

The oldest football league ground that's contuously been used by the same club is Deepdale In Preston.
That's why sometimes their fans will say they have the oldest stadium in the world.

What their really mean is that they are the pro club that has been the longest continuous tenants at the same ground in the world.

PNE have been using Deepdale since 1878 and the ground was built in 1875
United have only been using Bramall Lane since 1889 but the ground was built in 1855 for cricket and had its first football match played there in 1862, well before Deepdale was even built.

Yes good points :)

Maidenheads ground was also used for Cricket before a football was kicked in earnest on it, but I couldnt find any date for that from the bit of rummaging around I tried.

Just watched a program, here in Germany, about old stadiums. The three oldest were, 3: Bramall Lane, 2: Mansfield Town's. 1: Hallam FC. Showed the development of the Lane. Interesting, but I always thought the Lane was the oldest stadium still in use.

I hope the German commentary spent a lot of time talking about cricket, as Yorkshire used to play at Bramall Lane, and mentioned repeatedly what a bloody disgrace it is that Yorkshire now play in Leeds when they born in Sheffield.

I hope they also explained in German that Leeds is dump and Headingly is a nightmare to get to.

I'm surely there's some uniquely long word to explain Leeds in German

Yes, and probably some of the teams that amalgated to form United played at the Lane before Preston was formed.

Oldest professional stadium. However many think its the pig sty due to the fact it fuckin looks like an ancient ruin.
