By the clubs seemingly rigid wage structure? I fully appreciate the "no Billy big balls" view, but we are sitting 7th in the prem. If teams in 1st to 6th are paying their players twice as much then as much as it pains me to say it then our lads deserve the same. I'm worried that we will end up losing some of our key players eventually.
I don't entirely agree, but I think you've got a good point in so much as, if we are paying way below what other clubs at our level are paying, then we risk people leaving to get better wages. The bit I disagree with is, "our lads deserve the same". I think what our lads deserve is to be remunerated at a level that is appropriate for their skills and experience. That's quite different to saying they should deserve the same.
e.g. if Messi signed for us tomorrow, I dare say that he'd expect to be paid more money than any of the existing squad - and that would be fair, because his skills and experience warrant it.
I think because of where we've come from, a lot of the lads will be on lower wages than those established players in the Prem. If we can't compete on wages then we have to tie them in with other longer term incentives. And those can be linked to the team performance. I hear that's what we've done? I believe they all get a share of £10M if we stay up for example. That's really sensible because it encourages them to stay and it doesn't put us at any risk, because if we stay up we can easily afford it.
The other thing to think about is how much playing for this club and this manager means to these players? Not everyone is a mercenary although some are and, tbh, I don't blame anyone for looking to get a better deal for themselves in life. But money isn't the be all and end all. I think there are situations where we can pay our players less than they might get elsewhere if the other things they get by being here are valued enough.
e.g.
- regular first team football
- being recognised for international honours
- enjoying the social aspects associated with the club
- happy living in the area
The bottom line is, if it's all about money and they are good enough, then there's nothing on earth we can do to prevent them leaving for that. So there's no point in trying to compete on wages with some of these clubs. I think there's a real danger in that and I think it will be the downfall of some clubs over time. A sensible wage structure, linked to individual and team performance, attractive long-term incentives and the points bulleted above will all help us to retain players despite higher wages being on offer elsewhere.
