To cheer myself up I have just re watched the Promotion sealing game against IT in 2019.

3 things just jump out at me;

Our energy in closing down, going forward and backing up others.
Mark Duffy! His quality & ability to receive the ball and bring others into the game with accurate passes, which is what made the first goal.
Chris Wilder. The architect behind it all, & orchestrating things from the touchline.

Today, no energy, no MD & no CW. Just disappointing!

Seems just like yesterday doesn't it...?

It's enjoyable and depressing to watch ain't it.
What wilder built was made up of high energy, hard working performances with a sprinkling of quality and some fairly innovative tactics.

But underpinned within it was the energy and hard work. Take it out and it just didn't work.

This season or more or less since the pandemic we've not really seen that same energy levels like you mention. Injuries have been a big part as has not having a proper preseason too. And as confidence dropped further and further it became worse. They're working hard but it's a rut.

New manager in the summer needs to get everything freshened up and them fighting fit and energised again. Do that and the players who have dropped in form should return to form.

Dropped the Duffy role not the formation. And to be fair it worked for most of last season.

What I'm getting at is the energy levels are not the same. But I don't think it's through a lack of effort

The thing I most remember is as I was walking leaving the stadium we clapped the Ipswich fans coach as they left wishing them well x

Watching that again is like looking at photographs of your beautiful girlfriend who left you for the postman.
I can't look at the photos yet!

It looks odd now to suggest a converted 35 year old winger may be of use but it is a pity that Wilder took such a hard line.

He could have sent Duffy out the door with his tail between his legs. He could have still given Lunny a go instead. But having him around would have given another option. He's not a player that relied on pace at all. He was just clever.

He could we'll have been one of those players, like McGoldrick, who took to the level like a duck to water. It's a pity we never got a chance to see it, especially when you see the amount of leeway Lundstram was given and he's wanting to go! Duffy was wanting to stay!

That's what you MOST remember? Jesus. I remember a guy falling through a bus shelter, being absolutely steaming drunk and singing Blades songs walking through my part of S6.

You clapped a bus.

Someone has to reassess what's going off. Don't know if it's me.

Indeed. Decisions like that, in hindsight, are baffling. It's why I'm not so fussed Wilder has gone. The good times will be remembered, but the transfer dealings won't be.

They were a decent bunch. Was in the boozer with a lot before. Despite everything they'd come in party mode.

The problem was not so much that, but that having utilised it to great effect he really didn't have much else. After we got promoted we were playing sides who could nullify it having seen us enough in action. It turned out we had no alternative.

That's a bit harsh as the mythical "Plan B" doesn't really exist anywhere, but we were further handicapped by not having particularly talented players.

In the end we ended up playing ugly, cautious football, with the inevitable outcome because the coaching staff couldn't (or wouldn't) adapt.
