Interview With Collins

How strange, he says he has no idea why he was frozen out and he sounds genuine

Criticism aimed at Morgan maybe, some people who could have helped but looked the other way. Morgan seems the obvious one he's talking about.

Good articulate interview, he clearly cares about the club.

I wonder who he was referring to as someone who could have asked more questions at the time why he wasn't playing last season.

I assume he means someone should have been challenging Clough. I suspect Clough had too much of a grip for anyone to question him. You just know Garner and the rest of the his cronies wouldn't have.

His reaction to his goal and his celebrations were of a true blade

Yeah I've changed my mind a bit after listening to that.
Edit: Also, it's that sort of passion that you want in a captain. I hope McEveley has that same desire as club captain. That isn't a swipe at Mceveley btw, just very impressed by Collins after hearing that.

What that interview shows me is that any comment on player/manager/board members personality is very little else but pure speculation, mischief making or look at me, look at me in motive

I think it's very fair to say that only a very small circle of people within the club know the ins and outs of each person involved.

Read a lot of posts on here over the last 12 months that start with "I have it on good authority" or "As I understand it" and basically you know shit.

We don't know why Collins was frozen out, why Butler left, if Clough was how he has been portrayed

Speculation is great but at least have the balls to say it's what you feel is happening other than presenting it as fact.

Good post.

And although the interview has changed my opinion about Collins, we still don't know what went on between the two of them, and I wouldn't take at face value the I didn't know why. That could easily be:
  • I disagreed with why
  • I didn't accept why, or genuinely
  • I didn't know why

Just out of interest in what way has it changed your opinion of him? Not criticising just curious.

For me he has always come across as a decent person who clearly cares about the club he plays for - unfortunately he's just a crap centre half.

I really not worried what he says, it's all about how he plays.

His contract won't be extended again and he's earned a lot of money from playing throughout the most consistently poor era in our history. To redeem himself he needs to play better than he ever has before and help us get up. This is his last dab at achieving a respectable history with us.

I'd heard that he was a bit of a 'bad egg' in the dressing room along with Doyle. The way it was said was as if he was difficult and the whole fall out with Clough and aftermath seemed kind of childish. Also, his berating of Long on Saturday seemed a bit shitty from what people on here saw. However, after hearing him speak it's evident that he cares a lot and a lot of it is probably passion and his desire to play for us is fantastic.
Ability wise, no change.

He's emotional. Passionate. Not just a whinger. If you know that and he, say, has a go at another player then you can manage it. Tell players not to take it personally. Some will work that out for themselves. It'd be better if he didn't do it of course but he does, so if you think it's worth it then manage it, if not then let him leave.

I've listened a lot to Michael Vaughan (and others) talking about managing difficult characters eg KP and Freddie, and it really is man management.

Collins did an interview with Talksport on the eve of last season and he came across really well in that, I remember and was saying how much he was looking forward to the weekend and the season starting. Ihave always liked his attitude and think he comes across as quite bright and articulate. Especially for a footballer :-)

Then the day after Clough decided to play a teenager and a shit right back at centre half against Bristol City!

He was asked point blank and sounded to me like the last one - didn't know why - as I can't see any reason now after Clough has gone why he couldn't say if there had been some sort of direct fall out. I'm sure the club would not want him to say owt that could put them in a bad light but Clough is gone and the board themselves have come out with a few diplomatically worded crticisms of Clough (McCabe said he signed injured playres and Phipps said he played for a point at home).

Whatever his limitations as a player I sympathise with him after that interview (as I did about the shit that McNulty received last season) - I once had a year when I was working where I had an absolute shit boss who did the same to me and I could do nowt right, had a year in the cold. He got moved on and a new guy came in and it was my chance for a fresh start and I took it with a vengeance.

considering that clough indicated in several interviews reasons as to why he was dropped (even stating that if Collins had an issuw with it he knew where the managers office was... but he hadnt been to see him, I would say its one of the first 2...

Glad for Collins after his problems last yr but my only doubt preseason was his yr long clough imposed exile. & that he be rusty when he started in the 1st team again. He says he has "no logical explanation" for his absence under the previous regime last season.which is right because that Situation was quite dodgy to say the least but then to be clough went a bit weird like a dictator. Like in march when we had no fit CB's & people asking what about Collins he was conviently returning from injury

I thought that was a pretty clear swipe at the media, who didn't really press Clough to really go into the reasons.
I seem to recall Giddings and co asking questions about Collins from time to time but Clough didn't say much in response, they probably got bored. Until late in the season when he developed a calf strain.

Whilst it is nice to hear that Collins cares about SUFC so much, I would suggest that people take this with a degree of common sense. What do you honestly expect him to say? At the bare minimum, I expect the players to give everything they have and to care about the result so I'm not going to get over-emotional about Collins' words just like I didn't when Doyle gave a very emotional interview post-Charlton. However, as much as Collins probably doesn't like it, the facts are that we were relegated with him in the team (with Doyle), he has been here for four League 1 seasons where we have inexplicably failed to be promoted (with Doyle) and - as many suspected - the excellent defensive records we have had with Collins in the team went up in smoke when a certain Harry Maguire was sold. For 2/3 seasons, Harry was, in my opinion, carrying Collins who I rate as a mediocre League 1 defender and have done since the relegation. He struck gold with Maguire at his side and their partnership was good but Collins' defensive abilities were over-exaggerated last season when he fell out with Clough and wasn't playing. His last two away games for SUFC were 5 and 3-goal defeats to Swindon and Chesterfield which does tell a story. Also, when he left on loan, where did he end up? Smack bang in the middle of the division at Port Vale.

For this season, I still don't think he is good enough. Some were blinded by Doyle's interview and Cockney baiting when it was painfully obvious that he was a massive part of the problem at BDTBL last season. We cannot make the same mistake with Collins here. An option as a backup defender, no problem. He is not a first choice central defender for a promotion team though however many nice things he says about us.

Not listened yet but loved the passionate celebration tonight

Agree, Doyle also came across well after the Fulham game, both seem to have 'got into been a Blade', both still a big reason why we are where we are.

I've no idea what the players attitudes are towards the club are but if the squad feel like Collins then attitude shouldn't be a problem. I'll let people speculate about what happened Saturday at Gillingham?

Beat me to it.

Massively unprofessional on Clough's part talking to the media and saying stuff like that - "he knew where the managers office was" and then it as would seem obvious now, not speaking to the player himself. He was his manager and it was his duty. Clough goes down in my opinion every time I think about him.
