I was asked by my son who didn't get to either game who was better Brentford or Middlesbrough? I'm really not sure I can answer. ... thoughts?

In terms of playing 'football' Brentford by far but they'll probably be one of the best in the league at it. In terms of playing match winning football Middlesbrough, and they'll probably be one of the best in the league at that as well

Middlesbrough, strong in virtually every position. And they will get stronger as the season progresses, they have some very classy players.

Brentford. They created far more clear cut chances and forced Blackman into some very impressive saves.

Boro's goal today came about from Basham's cock up.

Brentfords defence looked worse...but dean was missing...
Brentford had a better understanding through the team, but they have been together longer than the newly assembled Boro
Boro have far more strength in depth and will get better
so atm i'd marginally say that Boro are better

Thought boro dominated us much more than Brentford did. Boro looked solid defensively throughout the team and we hardly looked like scoring.
Where as Brentford looked vulnerable and we could've had a couple

Right now I would say Brentford, as they played better football and had a much more discernible style of play, which is expected as Smith has been there a while.

Boro were functional, bland and unspectacular but strong where it counts and did the basics well. Excellent players but still figuring out how the new man wants them to play.

The key difference is that Boro will get much better, Brentford probably won't.

Boro weren't at their best but they obviously have a very strong squad, and I was impressed with their system. Clayton constantly dropping back between the centre halves gave them great flexibility and with the three centre forwards they have numbers at both ends of the pitch. It was hard for us to close them down in the first half but we made it much harder for them to play through midfield in the second half and they barely created a chance.

Their defence and midfield base looks very solid which is exactly as I expected, as they've been together a while and are all solid players. They never looked like doing anything careless.

As long as they find a way of getting their attacking players in the game they should be promoted comfortably. The way they set up today seems a good bet for them but better sides than us might exploit it a bit.
