Inevitable disappointment

Which players we've bought or brought through have excited you initially, only to end up disappointing when they went on to be at best mediocre.

I'll start off with...

David Cotterill - terrifying in that first loan spell. Then admittedly inconsistent afterwards. Still should never have been sold though.

Michael Tonge - whatever happened to the lad who scored two crackers against Liverpool? Grew into his body and out of his talent.

Simon Francis - a tall, quick, strong right back who was destined for the national side. Or maybe not.

Definitely agree with Simon Francis. I forget which year it was on Championship Manager that he always became a world beater and I had great hopes when he signed. Not sure where it went wrong for him, think he's still plodding along at Southend.

I'll throw Lee Hendrie into the mix as well.

Throw in Jimmy Johnstone and you have some real class that turned out to be shite.

At an average age of 74 when we signed them it wasn't too surprising though.

Tis always so after I've read one of his musings.

I've had a re-think and think that 95% of all signings we've ever made end up in this category becuase they either end up sold on or "past it" in the blink of an eye.
