Fortnight actually comes from the roman language and in its original form "fortu nate" (Latin - Fortu natum) means (basically) one term, as in the length of time a roman soldier served (20 days) before having 3 days break. This was exclusive to guards of palaces occupied by only the highest ranking officials ie the current emperor or close family. Your average roman soldier had no weekend or days off to speak of, much like a modern day soldier really.
