Not sure where we'll be shopping this Summer but Fleetwood have signed Schumacher from Bury and Hughes from Notts County this week, not world beaters by any stretch but both decent in this division.

They also paid £300k for Jamille Matt which would suggest that they have a far greater transfer fund than we do.

All the posts above scoffing at the idea of investing in players at a lower market price: what would you rate Miller at? It's generally thought that we spent £60k on him. Blackman cost £150k and was sold for nearly 10x that after 6 months. How much would Yeovil get for £20k Paddy Madden?

The key for United will be identifying players not playing to the best of their ability at the moment but who can shine in our team. A decent technical central midfielder won't look good in a long ball side but might work in ours, same goes for a small but quick centre forward.

We need to get back to uncovering the Simon Traceys and Brian Deanes rather than giving the Kitsons of this world an unnecessary financial boost.

But this isn't an imaginative new system this the the bog standard system. We all know that the imaginative system involves the academy players. This means finding a system that suits buying cheap players along with non-exceptional youngsters. To get us into to the Champonship. I think the imaginative bit is that we imagine we are in the championship because we won't go up with the strategy tabled by the owner and the club chair.

The imaginative format is looking for young players that are on the up, that can get better, that dont cost a fortune in either wages or transfer fees ie Miller and Blackman. Instead of the likes of Kitson, Robson Porter and Doyle. There were plenty of these players in our division look at Brentford Crewe,Walsall and Yeovil.
Weve wasted far too much money in the past on players like Doyle, Robson, Kitson, Jordan Stewart players whose best years were behind them with little or no resale value that wont get better they will only decline in quality.
The loan market if used right, that means scouting the players before we sign them, can be a vital asset to a club
Unfortunately the managers that we have had over the last 2 seasons have been very poor in this market and have wasted a lot of the clubs resources on Notworthy, Cofie, Poleon etc etc

I think everyone would agree that they'd rather sign up and coming youngsters rather than the likes of Kitson and Porter etc. I think the problem is that a) potential usually doesn't equate to a top player a few years down the line and b) if it is realised, then it takes time. I'm all for long-term thinking, I bang on about it enough. But I think if the Club was to issue a statement saying that we are building up from the bottom a really strong young team, that it might mean being in League 1 for 3 seasons but ultimately we'd be stronger for it, fans would take to the car park.

The fans and club have got to decide what they actually want, and be realistic on how it can be achieved. If they want the up and coming youngsters, give them (and the manager) the years they need to develop. If they want automatic promotion this season, spend spend spend on experienced players who are known quantities. There's a half-way house, but that still involves the likes of Kitson et al.

For the record, I don't think buying young players and hope they become good is "imaginative" and if anyone at United thinks it is, then in all seriousness, I think the club needs footballing help.

Here what your saying CG,but if united get the right man in I don't think long or maguire will go. Think about it, maguire at best, top half championship player, at the moment. Long under study to an average premier league teams goalie. If the new man gets off to a good start they may well both be in the championship next season anyway. And no I don't think mcCabe will back the new manager with cash, but the new man will know that when he comes in anyway.

Better still if McCall comes his record/experience would be valuable to Maguire.

The only problem with that theory is that Murphy was apparently a stand out player in the second best team in Scotland, yet hardly pulled up in any trees in the English third division.

I have little faith that other Motherwell players will be any better than him.

Bit similar to Ched Evans then. Prior to his 'final' season I would suggest his performances were seen as poor. Was he not seen as good as relatively speaking as Murphy? In the end Wilo got the best out of him (either that or his impending trial spurred him on a bit).

Excellent theory Bergs, sadly not consistent with our current policy.

We are the football equivalent of the "Primark effect". We buy players (I use the term "buy" to cover any incoming player) because they are cheap and we can afford them and NOT because they are part of a structured team building. The manager then has mould what he's got into some sort of cohesive unit.

'Primark effect'? More like 'Poundland' I'd say:) .

No he couldn't. Motherwell are in the Europa League and (as I have said 276 times) will probably get knocked out in the qualifying stage by a team from Romania or Serbia

ok fair enough, still dont get why he left chance of european footie for us
