This shows total lack of ambition from Illiman. I can understand him wanting to play for his boyhood club towards the end of his career, but now at his present age, it doesn’t make sense. He could have showcased his skills on the worldwide stage this coming season and moved onto a top European clubs next year, but could it be that not only does he lack ambition, but also lacks confidence in his own ability in playing in top flight football? I’m just beginning to think that he knows his own capabilities as he certainly didn’t shine against Man City and didn’t really stand out in the couple of games in the World Cup. Yes, he played well against Spurs, but who didn’t when they were playing such dross football. If this is the case, then perhaps he feels he’s quitting United as the top star and his move to OM is probably the same standard as the lower end Premier, top half Championship level where he knows he can continue to shine. In other words, he knows he has found his level and not confident enough with the risk of a move any higher. If he played to the same standard as he did against City throughout the majority of the coming season, he wouldn’t be worth jack shit this time next year.
Probably he’s just not prepared to take that gamble.
I mean, Billy dropped down a league to move to us in his prime. Did that show a lack of ambition? Or did he see the club in a position below where he thought it should be and think he could be a part of sorting that out?

Let's say a championship club, maybe even one with a decent shot at promotion, had offered to build their team around Billy at the same time that offer came in. He'd have been tempted, but he was coming here from the moment Adkins picked up the phone.

Maybe Ndiaye (rightly or wrongly) figures he can help his boyhood club, who to be fair to them are showing a ton of ambition with their signings this summer, take a step forward?

Fair play to the lad. It's his agent I'm furious with, as he appears to have single handedly engineered this move out of nowt over the course of the last 18 months.

Woodward? Currie? Deano? - personally i'd have all those above Illiman.
I’m 65 and watched all 3 for many seasons.
What I would say is they were all top Blades for their respective decades , but in the 21st century we have never had a quicker moving & quicker thinking creative , skillful , hardworking & effective player.
The aspect which puts him top of my list is that , along with all his talent when we’re in possession , his work rate & successful tackling when out of possession is the best I’ve ever seen from a forward.
He’s also very robust & resistant to injury for such a slightly built lad , despite never shirking a physical duel.
All these things considered , especially now the game is much more athletic than previously , he is the best all-round footballer I have ever seen in our team.
I would certainly have held him to his contract and accepted the loss of his transfer fee when he walked next summer.
In the balance between:
A) approx $15m ; and
B) the extent to which he assists us getting another $100m for staying up
I would have sacrificed the $15m.

Yes he might have been disappointed , but I know his character would have seen him perform to his max in the PL and he could have gone to any big club in Europe after that.

Some people just love to play hindsight football club CEO at times like these.

Probably the same people that are slagging off the Brewster signing, but were very happy with signing him at the time.
I certainly wasn’t and nor were a lot of Blades.
$23m on a kid who was described as one for the future - ie: not PL-ready , when we needed players who were , especially a quality LCB to replace JoC and a midfielder to create some chances with LunnyTwat fucking us over the entire season.
Brewster was totally the wrong signing at the time , even ignoring his lack of preparedness for PL & the injuries , leading to virtually no contribution in 3 years.

When he goes it's still not as bad in my view as when we sold Deane in 1993 and replaced him with Jostein Flo (Flu!). I've said this before, but it's worth a repeat for those that remember. The song went Flo, Flo......x 12 (to the tune of there's no limit) who needs Deano. After a couple of months, I have to say he started well, the song was changed to "We need Deano"!

We knew selling Deane was almost certain relegation. Ndiaye, less so. He's not played in the top flight for starters. Granted I think he'd have done very well, but maybe his replacement will also. Personally I think we need two strikers to replace him, I'm as worried that McBurnie is injured, no sniffer after Billy has gone and Jebbo and Osula are raw.

Looking back to Flo again, he scored 9 goals which in hindsight wasn't bad! I'd take that now from Ili's replacement! I've seen this all before, some are wetting their knickers, there's some awful stuff happening in this world on a daily basis, selling Iliman for £20m isn't one of them. I would have liked more as we wanted more for Deane back in 1993; remember which club did bid more but the bid was rejected!? Once the window slams shut then we'll know for certain how this window has gone. It's gutting losing Iliman but at least we've got £20m or so and can reinvest in other players, hopefully some more permanent players rather than loans.

With hindsight I think your spot on, illy is the most naturally gifted player I have seen for us but Deano was our Le tizz, not ability wise of course, but he was what he was

Once its confirmed Illi has gone, I think we become worth less than the 171m that Prince seemingly wants to sell us for.

Seen all sorts of figures blasted around due to currency exchanges etc is it in £ or € or what. However if the rumoured €17million which is the most consistent replicates to around £14.5million. For me he has potential and if the deal is sealed with sell ons that is a reasonable price for us. He wasn't our academy player, he isn't an English international, an incredible talent however one that can be replaced or other key positions filled. I wouldn't say he is ancient at 23 but in footballing terms he is getting to his prime a 3 year deal probably sees him there. One bad tackle ends it there too. Ultimately he record for us shows as 1 relegation, 1 promotion and 1 FA Cup Semi final decent achievements in a short spell in the first team however with 1 very small appearance in the Premier League other than the FA Cup against Spurs it is too early to say how much he could push on next season. If £8-10million is made available for the squad we can certainly look at filling gaps. Before people shoot me down I know not like for like positions or players however MGW made championship look like Champagne he gets into the Premier League and that turned to Cava he played 35 times for both us in the Championship and 35 times last season for Forest. For us he scored 11 for Forest 5. Its difficult to say if he made the difference in them staying up.

On the positive note by removing the pressure off is Ndiaye staying going or staying it gives the squad chance to breathe a bit, we can realistically look at U23s, who wants to step up, Stuttgart at home is your chance, prove you are just as good. Chance for Osula or Jebbo to nail a place.

Its a gamble selling a place like him however if by January he hadn't been able to get into games or got crocked like Brewster then be out of contract. You would hope the deal does have a bit in it for us in the event of a sell on and also a couple or 3 targets signed.

This whole, it’s his club blah blah blah is gibberish.

He’s a professional footballer - it’s a job, it’s a career. As a fan it’s easy to say, I’d love to play for United. How many professionals play for their boyhood clubs? Or request moves based on this rationale? Maybe at the end of their careers but not when you’re just about to play in the Prem League.

He’s blown a huge opportunity in the Prem and looking at the fact he’d done the video, verbally said yes etc in can only mean one thing, ……bloody agents and third parties in his ear all chasing the £££

Deano era closer to todays but when I see 70s/60s football it just looks so slow to me. Akin to walking football! Pitches and lack of fitness compared to today obviously a huge factor but it's almost a completely different sport so trying to compare is like a 1900s Victorian heavyweight at 12 stone against a modern 6 foot 7 20 stone bloke!

Didn't think much of it but him waving to the fans on Saturday makes sense now. No other players came over so Ndiaye knew then clearly.
