Absolutely brilliant result for the Inter Blades this morning against last years IFA Champions. Well done to Kempy, Jake, Presty, Tits, Danny S, Chris, Sean A, James, Liam, Tom, Andy, Ryan and me, for a fantastic performance.
Both teams were missing a few players, but the difference today was the new found confidence we seem to have running through the side since the wins against Cambridge & Forest, and a massive will to win.
The weather was cold but clear and Sunny, and no gale force wind for once! The low sun behind one of the goals was always going to be a problem for the team defending into it. The referee seemed as though he knew what he was talking about before the game in the pre-match ref's chat, but he turned out to be a little over fussy. Finally, the pitch wasn't the greatest, it was much worse than when we played Donny at the beginning of the season, but I've seen and played on worse.
We started fairly well, we got stuck in, used the wings well and were comfortable at the back. We took the lead about half way through the first half, I can't remember too much about the goal but it was Chris Beckett once again who pounced from close range to put us 1-0 up. Rotherham battled back but we managed to close down any attacks and restrict them to just a few shots at goal which Kempy dealt with. Just as we looked to be heading into the interval with a one goal lead we struck again. Kempy hit a huge clearance straight up the middle of the park, the defender either misjudged it or lost it in the sun and Tom ran through on goal. It was always going to be 50/50 as to who made it to the ball first but Tom McCaig's extra pace beat the keeper to it and he headed past him, unfortunately he took a knock somewhere rather delicate for his troubles... but who cares! they weren't mine and we were 2-0 up at half time! ;-)
The second half followed a similar pattern but it was Rotherham who struck first. One of the Millers forwards found himself clean through on goal after a punt down the middle and he stuck it in the corner to bring the score back to 2-1. We went a bit quiet then for a short period but then picked our game back up again and with about 20 minutes left we extended our lead to 2 goals again. A corner from the left was played into the near post by James, and Liam Wasden rose highest to back flick the ball over the keeper into the far corner. The referee was starting to get a bit fussy about back-chat from both sides and unfortunately for one of their players, he took the brunt of it and was sent off "for being sarcastic" ??? This fired the Millers players up a bit and despite the numerical disadvantage they grabbed a goal back from a half cleared corner. A few minutes later though we sealed the victory, some good work by the lads up front ended up with the ball running free to Chris Beckett just inside the area and he rifled it home to put us 4-2 up. We nearly added a fifth just before full time, but the keeper pulled off the best save ever from my right foot rocket from the edge of the box ;-)
Well done all, a great all round performance, safe hands in goal, a tight defence, combative and creative midfield and the two lads up front are on fire at the moment.
Next match possibly on Saturday 30th December, still searching for opponents but I have a few potential options.
I don't post the fixtures/results on here as often as I used to as we have our own website, message board & mailing list, so if anybody is interested in keeping tabs on how we're doing then check out our website for the up-to-date news and stats. If you can't find it via google etc. then mail me for the link. The boys have won their last three games and are playing well, it would be nice to see a few faces down cheering them on if anybody has the time.
cheers,
Danny B.
