The least surprising news yesterday was that John Lundstram won the Man Of The Match award. Not because he was the best player (he did OK) but because he scored a goal. It seems to be every home game the award goes to the goalscorer. How many at the game actually text in to name a Man Of The Match?

It’s just plain stupid.

I asked who decides it because it’s definitely not the majority of us!

The problem is, it devalues it for the rest of us. I totally ignore it.

And worse than that, it’s a missed commercial opportunity for the club. They could charge 20p a vote and they’d get 20000 plus votes - £4000 quid extra a game. And we’d get a true reflection of what the fans really think.

I don't think there's any grand conspiracy. Lundstram was comfortably the best player on the pitch and was subsequently awarded the man of the match for his efforts.That's the way it should be

Probably symptomatic of the “I want it now” world we live in ( Sorry I was a kid before t’internet) but if the club truly wanted to engage fans in this couldn’t we vote after the game and it be awarded later? I doubt players give a toss about it being an immediate thing and would value any award much more if it was based on votes cast for say 1 hour after the end of the game. Jeez even Strictly won’t let you vote until they’ve finished dancing - ahem, obviously, according to Mrs C.....(gotta love those Latin American moves though )

Yes because nobody in the history of MOTM winners has ever been substituted before. Nothing to do with putting in a full shift Friday vs Leicester, or the fact he was the midfielder covering for Stevens at LB, which was the problem area, which Wilder saw and addressed.

In my Iraqi sweatshop where I produce scarves of the half and half variety, I give my 20000 employees 1 min break towards the end of each game to vote for the MoM

There were 467 people that voted last night, although I don't think they put the nominations on the screen. I didn't notice them anyway.

I remember the Preston game, when Sharpy had done nothing all game, then scored from the spot, the only thing he did right all game. Just before they announced the motm I jokingly said to my mate "Billy Sharp", was gobsmacked when a split second later 'motm Billy Sharp'!!

Another factor in all this is what I call the Tony Pritchett factor. The Star reporter on United from the 70s to 90s was famous for giving the player who was deservedly getting stick from Blades fans the motm in his Monday match report in the Star. In the late 80s / early 90s you'd have thought we'd have got another Glenn Hoddle or Bryan Robson turning out at the Lane the number of motm and fawning match reports he gave to John Gannon and Jamie Hoyland.

If players genuinely do well at the Lane, they'll get praise from the fans, if they're playing poorly the fans will let them know about it. It's not a witch hunt, it's calling it as we see it.
