If we start playing boring hoofball in the Championship

Its unlikely, but not inconceivable that should we get promoted there'll be a time when Wilder decides to change tactics in order to achieve the best results.

We have been here before of course with Kevin Blackwell, who was sacked on the basis of poor quality football rather than results, a decision which was in my opinion one of the worst in the club's recent history and responsible for our relegation to this god forsaken division.

There was a lot of pressure from the fans to get rid of him, whilst I don't anticipate the same would happen with Wilder because 1. He's a Blade 2. He's recognized as a good manager who got us out of this division, I would hope that as long as we are safely in the Championship that we NEVER EVER sack or call for a manager to be sacked on the basis Blackwell was ever again.

I know the question plays with a lot of hypotheticals, but I hope the majority can agree that we don't want history to repeat itself!

So things are going well yes? Why the fuck would you go digging around for a hypothetical bollocks situation that hasn't yet occurred? You must be bored to fuck.

A bird with an egg in its Bush is worth two that have hatched.

Blackwell was a good choice after Robbo the drunk. He deserved the next season and almost did it whist having to sell the family silver.

Should have sacked him after the playoff no show.

The kop sang "we want Gary Speed" at the qpr match. That was a bad decision as it turned out. We were brilliant against scumthorpe and somehow got beaten 4-0.

That game for me somehow was the writing on the wall.

Also remember noticing a certain Mark Duffy that night, and thinking he was a really tricky, excellent midfielder.

Tuftyball gone bad. It's almost worth it for the pinchy factor...
We could even re-brand it Pinchyball just for the laugh.

I mean, attributing pronouns to degrade people is a specialty of his - I give you "Runaround Done" and "Diplodocus Dave".

Pinchy would do well at a tabloid. They too are good at dividing people through derogatory categorisation...

The football under Blackwell was awful. His sacking didn't get us relegated. Managing to replace him with someone even worse did.

Spot on.

Boring as Blackell's team may have been and accepting he had some decent players to manage, I think on the yawn factor he came a distant third to Adams and Worst of all Adkins. More Blades were looking at their phones than towards the pitch last season.

How true, they're also very good at spouting bollocks

Please forgive the delay. I've been having surgical sutures in my sides. They split wide open at the idea that sacking the former semi-professional reserve non-league keeper was a serious mistake. Failing to publicly sack the useless fucker in the centre circle at half-time at Wembley, having first put him in the stocks and thrown eggs at him, was the grievous error there. Nothing else.

Oh, and some of the Pro-Hoof drivel is funny as well. Bassett 'style' would work today? Dear, oh dear. That notion was consigned to the bin a while ago, or so I thought. As redundant, discredited and ludicrous as the grotesque anti-football they advocate. Have they no shame?

I don't see why he would suddenly change style, if it is not working I think he will look at other formations, but I think he will keep with a style of pressing passing football, most managers these days know hoof ball is a prehistoric style that might get a couple of results but it is quickly found out, most teams even at this level, try and play proper football and the ones that do it the best tend to get out of the division, the championship looks to be no different.

Some on here are falling into the Massive trap: 'Div. One is a pub league. The Championship is Premier-lite.'

There are no 'pub leagues' at this level. As Charlton proved, every team is packed with young, determined, supremely-fit guys with plenty of skill. In our stay in Div. One, we've suffered embarrassing losses to the likes of Stevenage, Crawley, Hartlepool etc. This was more down to poor management being unable to adapt tactics, formations etc. CW won't be guilty of this.

I reckon that, in the top four leagues, about a third of the teams in each - including the PL - aren't up to the standards required. Will it be a surprise if Watford, Sunderland, Palace etc. get relegated sooner rather than later? Do Rotherham & Burton seriously think they're not over-achieving and a return to their natural level - League One - will be in their best interests rather than losing most weeks?

CW is the seventh manager we've had at this level. With the possible exception of Clough, and maybe Wilson (who both served up boring, unimaginative fare), the rest couldn't lace Wilder's boots.

Spot on, great post pretty much what I was trying to say but put much more eloquently. :)

i've tried to watch a few Championship games this season to get a feel for it. i have seen 'nothing' to frighten me.. not even the top two

I have seen a couple and some teams even look a bit sloppy in comparison to the Blades, I think it looks a tad more fluent but not scary and I really think with a few minor adjustments the current team could compete and finish respectably and not fear relegation.

Regardless of whether there was a choice he still integrated them successfully into the first team. And there probably was a choice, sure he could have played senior players out of position instead.

The general point I'm making is that I would urge us to never to hound a manager out again as long as we are safely in the championship!

A couple of seasons being mid-table I could tolerate but we want to be challenging for promotion eventually. I don't fancy plodding along doing sod all in the Championship for a decade.

Just me that referred to Bassett's style and its efficacy. I know you prefer to generalise those and attribute such comments to the masses as you'll get more bites that way.

I'm not really interested is discussing the merits of hoof v passing, it's been done to death and if you can't see that the current PL champions won their league by punting balls towards Vardy and Mahrez or that Bolton are hoof personified, then I'm wasting my time.

My reference to Bassett wasn't intended to give the impression that we would set up just like he did, just a simple comparison between long ball football that works and Blackwell's that didn't. I very much doubt CW would try to emulate Harry, he would have done so by now if that's what he thought was the best way to win games. I'm simply saying that if he did decide to play a game based on longer passing, he wouldn't make a pig's arse of it like the chubby goalkeeper did.

That semi pro had to wait 2 years after he was sacked by UTD to get another job in football at, wait for it, 4th Division Bury ?

Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments of the post, I think it only right and proper to raise the point that they were 3rd Division on his arrival bit, inevitably, 4th when they showed him the door.

McCabe out?

Depends what he is prepared to do in The Championship now he has the prince on board. If it is a repeat of last time we were there then we will end up back in League 1.

We haven't even got there yet and it's already starting.

Much the same as those who claimed "Wilder was the cheap option the board wouldn't back him, won't go up" brigade at the start of the season now conveniently forgotten.

Any promotion celebration must be spoiled by worrying about next season for some. That's a shame.

I didn't start the thread.

When people really started to turn on Blackwell mid way through the 08/09 season I thought it was unwarranted given how he'd saved us from certain relegation under Robson and we were 3rd in the league with a real shot at automatic promotion. He'd brought through Kyle Naughton as part of an incredibly mean defence as well.

The football was bad but it proved effective and when you are winning it doesn't matter as much. It also seemed incredibly unhelpful at the time to give the manager and players that much grief when a return to the Premiership looked on the cards.

Granted the stick he took for the insipid play-off final performance was very much deserved and it all fell apart from there.

The season after it was dreadful though (Cresswell on the left wing, Nyron Nosworthy etc). He followed this up by making Leon Brittan his marquee signing in the summer.....who spent the handful of matches he played for us watching the ball fly miles above his his head. 3 straight defeats at the beginning of the 2010/11 season and his sacking was well over due.

The problem was the majority of appointments that came after.

Afraid to say we have seen it in action tonight let's hope it's an exception.

Don't mind it as long as it gets results have no idea why Duffy didn't start. We need creativity

They were all over us in midfield. Time and again Basham had the ball, looked up, and just swung his foot, lazily hoofing the ball up to the front two. Hull did to use what we used to do to teams and we haven't really got an answer for teams that do that to us.

The midfield was poor - no one wanted it off the defenders - and before any one adds - Lundstram is even worse at wanting it in tight positions, so he isn't the solution. The game cried out for a number 10 after 20 minutes, never mind when Duffy came on. It might even have ben better with 2 number 10's away from home against a shit team like Hull

A very poor Hull team made us look useless.
