Its unlikely, but not inconceivable that should we get promoted there'll be a time when Wilder decides to change tactics in order to achieve the best results.

We have been here before of course with Kevin Blackwell, who was sacked on the basis of poor quality football rather than results, a decision which was in my opinion one of the worst in the club's recent history and responsible for our relegation to this god forsaken division.

There was a lot of pressure from the fans to get rid of him, whilst I don't anticipate the same would happen with Wilder because 1. He's a Blade 2. He's recognized as a good manager who got us out of this division, I would hope that as long as we are safely in the Championship that we NEVER EVER sack or call for a manager to be sacked on the basis Blackwell was ever again.

I know the question plays with a lot of hypotheticals, but I hope the majority can agree that we don't want history to repeat itself!

I don't see why he would suddenly change style, if it is not working I think he will look at other formations, but I think he will keep with a style of pressing passing football, most managers these days know hoof ball is a prehistoric style that might get a couple of results but it is quickly found out, most teams even at this level, try and play proper football and the ones that do it the best tend to get out of the division, the championship looks to be no different.

Blackwell would have taken us to League One eventually.

Sacking him merely deprived him of the opportunity.

I don't think we will resort to poor quality football . Poor quality football is caused by poor tactics and poor players . We will change tactics , formation depending on who we are playing and how the match is going .

Wilder will gets some slack being a Blade but results are be all and end all .

Warnock and Adams are Blades but the crowd turned against them when served with crap , poor tactics , poor loans , buys and losing .

You can win the premiership and still get the boot .

Fans and the board have to be patient , as sure eggs are eggs we will go on a bad run in the championship .

Let's get there first eh , as fate as a way of kicking Sheffield United Football Club and all associated , in the bollocks.

It's only the 2nd most unpleasant style to watch.

Backwards, sideways, gutless tippy tap for the sake of looking pretty but yielding no fucking result whatsoever, is far more soul-destroying to watch.

The method which gets the result is the method to use. The ball going into the net is the only "entertainment" that matters. Fuck anybody elses delicate aesthetic sensibilities.

Nah..........Gareth Southgate made England play with 3 at the back in Germany last night.

Now I reckon both Chelsea and now England are following CW & AK lead.........;)

New times, where we lead the rest follow....................

Who needs Conte when we have Wilder .

Big light coming up at the end of the tunnel.

So you're saying we should never sack a manager because he's fucking useless again?

No we won't so don't worry about it

We have footballers in the team and Wilder won't ask them to do what isn't natural to them

Unlike our last 700 managers or so

So you're saying we should never sack a manager because he's fucking useless again?

I think reading between the lines, he is saying would we give Wilder time if he was playing hoof ball, to be fair Bush its never going to happen so its all good, as for sacking the manager, we should give more time but if utterly shite we should get rid no question, I know a lot of people say sacking managers as not worked for us, but we could not have got to wilder with out said sackings, and both Nigel's had expiry dates, Madkins went a little over.

my big wonder if we go up is will the board run the club better than the last time, looking at the bigger picture and making both better and more concise decisions to benefit the club on all levels.

We probably wont get promoted so no need to change anything.

STOP IT.

You could not be any more wrong about semipro if you tried.

He set us back 10 years. We are only now just seeing the green shoots of recovery.

Sacking him was being kind. A public flogging would have been more appropriate !

IMHO ;)

PS there is no way Tufty will go 100% Hoof.

So you're saying we should never sack a manager because he's fucking useless again?

Is finishing 8th in the Championship 'fucking useless'? He brought in Naughton, Walker and Lowton into the side, yes there was some dross and dire games but the results were actually rather effective. We got a good draw at Cardiff with ten men, then were thrashed by the future champions QPR and the fierce reaction was in part the reason why he went. It was only when Speed (RIP) and Adams tried to change the style of play did we look like a relegation side.

We all hope it doesn't happen, but it may well happen that our now tactics don't work in the Championship so in theory the style of play may suffer as we adapt. The question is, how tolerant should we be? As Tyler rightly says, as long as the results are ok that's all that matters. Seems others would want Wilder to go if we repeat the 2009-10 season :(

Iniesta - who's that?, does he play for Accrington Stanley?

nah - Iniesta would just end up being an expensive sub, Fleck, Coutts and Co have it covered :)

Yes it is with the budget he had. It's not comparable with CW's situation. Blackwell wasted huge amounts of money and achieved nothing.

If we do play long ball with CW, he'll sign players who can play that kind of football, big athletic midfielders who cover every blade of grass not ball playing middies who just wave their arms around as the ball goes over their head again, another target man so if one gets injured we're not hoofing balls towards a striker who needs good service to score, defenders who can defend. It would be Bassett, not Blackwell, and it would work.

If CW does end up with one of the highest budgets in the league and finishes a season in eighth playing the kind of football you play if you've got the lowest budget in the league, then he deserves the sack. But it won't happen. It's like discussing what will happen if CW takes a dump in the centre circle before kick off.

Agree, it's very unlikely but as I've said in my reply to FM, if it does, Wilder will do it properly and it will be exciting, if not pretty. He won't ever be like Blackwell.

100% - It feels like we all still have hang ups but this change that Wilder has brought around is slowly becoming the place we all now associate with being a good place and in Wilder we trust.

Has it ever occurred to you that semi pro inherited the most expensively assembled UTD squad in its history and left it in an utter mess ?

That semi pro had to wait 2 years after he was sacked by UTD to get another job in football at, wait for it, 4th Division Bury ?

That he was quickly shown the door there for fucking them over as well ?

That he hasnt had a managers job since ?

That, if it wasn't for Colin, it's highly unlikely he would work in English football ever again, even as a coach ?

UTB

Looking back on the Championship season of 2009-10, how many of these teams had a far smaller budget than us?

Probably Swansea and Blackpool, though they were very well managed so it was no disgrace to finish behind them and certainly not worthy of being sacked for that reason. If people remember we also had an injury crisis and had an absurd amount of loan players to cobble together a team, we did ok considering the circumstances.

1 Newcastle United (C) (P) 46 30 12 4 90 35 +55 102 Promotion to Premier League
2 West Bromwich Albion (P) 46 26 13 7 89 48 +41 91
3 Nottingham Forest 46 22 13 11 65 40 +25 79
4 Cardiff City 46 22 10 14 73 54 +19 76
5 Leicester City 46 21 13 12 61 45 +16 76
6 Blackpool (P) 46 19 13 14 74 58 +16 70
7 Swansea City 46 17 18 11 40 37 +3 69
8 Sheffield United 46 17 14 15 62 55 +7 65

Naughton and especially Walker were brought in because McCabe put a stop to us paying for shite loans the clown kept getting. There was no more money for him. He had no choice.

Regardless of whether there was a choice he still integrated them successfully into the first team. And there probably was a choice, sure he could have played senior players out of position instead.

The general point I'm making is that I would urge us to never to hound a manager out again as long as we are safely in the championship!

I am not sure what point you are trying to make? Wilder will play to the strengths of his squad.

Well you're wrong.

So that general point is because of what happened to Blackwell? He messed up, badly, more than once. That's why unless Colin employees him in case Stan Ternent shows up, no one is interested in him.

I think that's extremely unlikely. All managers have their preferred style of playing and all of us, as human beings, tend to repeat what has worked for us before. In Wilders case that's high energy, pressing and passing football. For Bassett it was the long ball, aggressive percentage game. Kendall was short, neat, passing. Clough was cautious, keep it tight, stifling of the opposition. Adkins was employ your old mates and talk bullshit.

Chris won't change his style no chance.

Nothing to worry about. This team would be top half Championship without any additions or change of style. With a bit of investment they'll do even better.
