How anyone could want another season of that boring, defensive shite is beyond me. Time and time again we have been outplayed and outfought on our own ground. We should be dominating teams. To consistently play that way is nothing short of disgraceful.

Fortunately I think most fans are of a similar view - that's the impression I get at the matches themselves and on social media more generally. Clough seems to have a few supporters on here - but even here it is 50:50 which is hardly the sort of togetherness we need to go forward.
Deano you have to remember this is a forum overloaded with happy clappers. That said is this really the time for yet another Clough in / out debate / poll ? oh and Paulus how many managers have promoted Watford had this season ?

Teams who jump for quick changes of manager invariably build up problems - classic example Notts County relegated today -
Steve Cotterill, Craig Short, Paul Ince, Carl Heggs, Martin Allen, Keith Curle, Chris Kiwomya, Shaun Derry, Ricardo Moniz, 9 managers in 4.5 years. Who the hell will want to go there next season if, as given the track record, they get rid of Moniz over the summer? If you look at that list it's a real mixture of guys with decent track records, local heroes and off the wall punts - the bottom line is when you appoint someone no one really knows how it will go.

Yes of course people are frustrated by the things that have gone wrong this season, that we haven't achieved automatic, that Clough has made misjudgements in selection, tactics, personnel, but at the same time to my mind there are positives as well, the youth development seems much more co-ordinated with the first team, there seems more professionalism throughout the running of the club, the cup runs have been great and we are seeing a desire to play better football being embedded throughout the team. We have a plan and given time it is a plan that I think will work. To sack Clough now and start again on the off chance that a new bloke might suddenly make everything good strikes me as the counsel of desperation, a bit like voting UKIP and thinking that will miraculously solve the countries problems.

Unfortunately there is no exact science when it comes to managers, your example of Notts County is a fair one, but Watford have had 4 managers this season so how have they managed to be successful?

I look at it in a very simplistic way, if a manager is achieving or exceeding the expectation of the board and fans then he will keep his job if he doesn't he could be sacked.

Clough is now the 37th longest serving manager out of the 92, so by modern standards he has had enough time to achieve the expectations (promotion) of us fans and the board. If he fails in the playoffs he can have no complaints if he is sacked.

Quite, especially since Steve Coterill is at 42, and Mark Warburton below him.

Has Clough really down anything this year to convince anybody that we would be challenging for automatic next season in League 1?

I suppose the answer to that is no.

I am pro Clough because for once at the lane we do need stability. In saying that Watford have blown that one out of the water in achieving promotion.

If we don't make it this season , the board do have a difficult task in hand , as Clough like he is now , will be in a no win , no win situation.

He hasn't done anything in his League managerial carreer to convince me we will be in contention for Automatic promotion next season

Once again the Clough out club is in full force and no I don't go to many games for health reasons so I may not have the right to an opinion but even if the play offs are a complete farce for us again I would give him till middle August to bring in 3 good centre halves 1 good holding midfielder and 2 good forwards and clear about 10 of the dross out ! if he fails to do this then I will gladly join the lynching party :D
But for the next couple of weeks I will do what I have done for 50 plus years and live in a fantasy world :p

Out of interest- and I genuinely do not know the answer - since Clough was appointed how many of the 36 longer than him have won a cup or promotion and similarly how many of those who have neen in charge for less won?

There are a few but not all on this thread, disagree with me about what I said about tactics, but the obviously they aren't working because we haven't won a game in our last 5.

Couldn't agree more Fulwood.

It just staggers me that trolls united have to try and put spokes in the wheel at every available opportunity. There is some thing kamikaze about some of our so called fans and the word unity sadly lacks from their mentality.

I appreciate it's hard for some - just let the management, players and staff just get on with preparing for 2, possibly 3 very important games in our history. Considering everything, they are possibly the most important in our history. The fan base is extremely dived (understandable), but if there is one time we need to stay "united" it's now.

If it goes tits up, fine, have your inquest and blood letting - NOW IS NOT THE TIME.

I agree with a few others that if we fail to get through the play-offs then NC should be given another chance next season, but I believe we need to challenging for automatic given the resources he's had. I think we've massively under-achieved this season and I don't think he's ever really known all season what his best side is. This was obvious from day one with the side he put out against Bristol on the opening day (although we still should have won that game). What disappoints me is that I haven't really seen any opposing team at the Lane that I've thought have been really good and I believe with the players at our disposal, we should have been winning far more games. We've been searching for a striker all season but won't give a proper chance to one who's ended top scorer even though he's only started a handful of games (McNulty). I don't what his goals to games ratio is, but it must be decent. The list is endless, he's been playing a midfielder and a full back at centre back because he fell out with the two centre backs who should have started the season, the midfield has lacked a leader all season and although I'm glad we signed Brayford, I think we needed a dominant midfielder more. Morsy of Chessy ran the game yesterday, who can do that for us? I'm hoping he makes some decent signings in the summer and it all comes together next season.

UTB!!

He's pissed me off all season, but I'm willing to see what he'll do over the summer and next season

If we lose the playoffs would you like to see Clough leave?

At the moment I'm in the middle. I like what he's done in the cup and I think with a few additional players we would be automatic contenders, however I thought the same last year and his additions haven't really had that affect, the search for a striker has affected or search to bolster the squad.

Also the times I've seen us play this season, the tactics have been all over the place, with long balls to the shortest man on the pitch. messy defending and a bit of dodgy goalkeepering. Most of that can easily be sorted out though, and this is why I'm undecided so I would like to see what you guys think.

Do I have to keep repeating it?

Get a new manager and back him till he loses, then sack him.
New manager syndrome kicks in and we win a few then sack him when we lose one and then repeat, be champions well before Easter.

Really? Perhaps they should give way to a few more single-cells and crayon drawers? Unlimited space for those in the brain-free land of S2.

Weir'll certainly be in the top 6 and I'll now predict it - Top 2. Those who are conceding top spot to Wolves will be in for a surprise.

Single cells and crayon drawers indeed, You should be embarrassed to post such rubbish as the above . No further proof needed that what you know about football can be written on a postage stamp.

Eyup Mr Pinch.

Will you happily accept the board's decision at the end of the season, even if it's a vote of no confidence ?

Or will they be labelled single-cells too ?

Me - well i'm happy to go with whatever the board go with, i'm too tired to get too emotional these days.

I am surprisingly on the fence about this. I am sure he will face some tough questions from the board, and the board will act on however he responds. I wouldn't be surprised or upset either way as he must surely have learnt a lot from this season. We are probably 1 quality CB and CM away from being a strong team.

In the meantime, he needs to get this players galvanised. They need to go out on Thursday and for the first 10 minutes they need to put it all in and get the fans onside. Fans react to energy. If we get a goal, then go and get another. We are team which doesn't know whether to stick or twist when we get our noses in front. let's just go for it and whatever happens don't go out with a whimper.

Not wishing to go off on a tangent but I think we're two quality centre halves short. Basham is needed elsewhere, McEv is good backup and Tel is sadly unreliable. It's a yawning chasm in the squad.

I think I would leave Basham at the back, and get someone similar with better midfield skills. Basham is great up to the final 3rd where to be fair he is not very good.

Good post. It would be nice to see us go for it but i just can't see it, and yes we're not far off a good side but add another CB to your list as JD has already mentioned, get the players and management working in the same direction and we would have the nucleus of a good side, i'm struggling to see how Clough is going to achieve this at the moment though as to not have the nucleus in place at this stage with the resources he's had is not acceptable really.

If the players need to be galvanized or motivated in any way for the next three games then they are a disgrace and not fit to be professional footballers.

No further proof needed that what you know about football can be written on a postage stamp.

As I said earlier, they nominate themselves don't they?

I've spent over 50 years and over 1500 matches learning nothing. I'm afraid the single-cells really bristle when anyone dares to challenge their knee-jerk, self-serving, cave-dweller drivel.

It's NC's first full season. He worked absolute wonders last season. This one has not gone as well as expected. He's made mistakes and the football has not been anywhere near as good as I hoped. We are, however, still in with a great chance of promotion. Perhaps if "supporters" acted like people worth the name instead of taking pleasure in our shortcomings and knocking the manager at every opportunity (blaming management for DC-L's less then stellar cameo is the latest of many ludicrous examples) we might just improve the team's chances by a percentage or two. Instead the vast majority of 26,000 sit in near-silence broken only by moans, complaints and blaming the manager because the ambient temperature is a degree too low. Pathetic bunch, they are...no bottle....no bollocks.

Building a club takes time. We may need to wait another 12 months for tangible progress, who knows? I'd sooner have NC guiding that process, however, than the sort of Upanatem, two game, Quickfix miracle worker that many S2 Neanderthals would prefer. Such people get found out sooner rather than later.

I don't disagree that we have our fair share of fans who ridiculously over-criticise at the slightest thing, you hear them on the kop every other week. I think fans are absolutley fed-up of this club under-achieving for so long, and we all show our levels of patience from one end of the spectrum to yours :-)

I completely agree though that it will be counter-productive in a play-off situation, and we will be playing into the oppositions hands by replicating a library this Thursday. Might as well give it our best shot - as crap as we have been for most of this season, I think the three teams in with us are very beatable, if we can raise the bar one last time.

I do though think it's a bit mischievous to label the people on here the "single-cells" - for which I bet many are shouting their voices raw every home game (not sure you'll agree with this statement but hey-ho).

Excuse me Sir. I give you this:

:)

I have to disagree that we have massively underachieved, we are where we are for a reason we have not been good enough we have shown we are no better in this league than the rest of them, you get what you sow and for us this season it's a playoff space, what we do with this can only be achieved with what we have got at the moment, I want SU to be the best they can be and we have seen glimpses of that this season, if the players need a kick up the back side to motivate them lets do that, but let's do it in a positive way.
