If we finally get promoted, who'll cut it!!!

Agreed, Championship clubs regularly spend around £10m on one player. When we were last there, that sort of money on your starting XI would make you one of the favourites for promotion!

Exactly.

Look what we have in the English 2nd tier now. Relegated clubs with eye-watering parachute payments, more revenue from TV rights, huge transfer budgets, the likes of which we didn't even have when we were a Premiership club.

Rafa Benitez and half the Newcastle squad wouldn't willingly drop down to the 2nd division of any other country on earth. There's some big clubs clubs, some very good players with world-class facilities in that division.
The magnitude of the job we have on our hands if we get there is something we have to be equal to, and sadly means saying goodbye to players who served us well in this division.

As I have mentioned recently, when the Prince came on board the talk was about premier league in five years after we get out of this division, I know some will go on about KM saying Europe in what ever when we went up to the premier but his comments a few years ago had more credence fir me because of the the Prince coming on board has anything happened to change this? I expect news after we win promotion on new and realistic targets for the club, hopefully the new " big hitters" who will be sponsoring us, according to Baki anyway. And when folk start saying "lets wait till we go up" Why? are we really going to jeopardise our chances because we dare to talk about it? Grow up.

Think you need to grow up. Re visit whats happened over the last decade then come back and put your hands up and say theres my bollox like what I just talked.
You sound pretentious mate.
Thats a pig virtue.

There wouldn't be major surgery under Wilder.
He's formulating a squad her based on team spirit and hard graft he and Knill has improved players out of all proportion.
He'd make the additions as necessary three or four main signings tops.

I am definitely not pretentious, what I am trying to say is theres nowt wrong with talking about going up, and by doing so it will jeopardise our chances of promotion, whats happened has happened, I just dont get this wanting to kick the owners all the time, pretentious? Fuck that pal.

The time for obtaining a couple of players that are Championship material is coming in the next month
I would rather get the players to get us promoted. I couldn't give a shit if they are championship material

If we continue this great form and manage to get promoted, I think our squad should consist of:

Moore
Ramsdale
EEL
JOC
Wright
Freeman
Fleck
Coutts
Duffy
Brooks
Lavary
Sharp

Complimented by a similar amount of quality and quantity as the following:

Ariyibi
Bogle
Evans
Morsy
Jackson Irvine from Burton
Mcfadzean
Bryne
A left back

Don't forget it's still a long season and you never know who is gonna pop up and surprise you. Don't be surprised if someone like Hussey makes himself the first name on the team sheet over the next 15 - 20 games, playing in a confident side like this.

Keep the likes of Wilson, Hussey, Basham, Whiteman, Scougall around the squad to cover and play in the cups.

That looks like quite a competitive Championship squad, without spending on a bomb. Under Wilder, perhaps mid-table.

I'd actually fancy us to do OK in the Championship with what we've got now plus the addition of two really good wing backs. A good pair can make a massive difference in this formation.

About five would get in most Championship sides

Moore
EEL
Fleck
Coutts
Duffy

A couple of useful squad players at that level..
Sharp
Wright

make no mistake if we did get up it would be all hands to the pump for the following season or two not to come back down, it's a much much tougher division than when we left it six years ago.

However as others have said we ain't got there yet.

Er because the owner and latterly owners have been fucking gash for years.
Have you been hibernating?
Let's win our next match and not talk crap about next season with wanker owners until and if that fucking happens.

After watching us annihilate Swindon I came home and watched Preston v Blackburn on TV. The commentators and pundits thought it was a really good game but both sides looked pretty pedestrian to me in comparison to the way we played.

I honestly think our best XI, on yesterday's evidence, would be too good for an average second tier side. We have skill, persistence and speed. It's a very potent combination.

That's the problem.
Barcelona have Messi, Suarez and Neymar up front,
Do you think they aren't interested in the next big name that comes along because they are happy with the way things are ?

All of our signings from this point on should be players that are better than what we currently have, players who will be able to make the step up.
Otherwise why bother signing them ?
The club better start making every signing an improvement on what we have, rather than the constant supply of versatile shirt fillers we've been subjected to for years otherwise it will fall so far behind that even becoming a decent Championship club will be beyond us

After 6 years in this pub league, to be rubbing shoulders with our peers and old foes in championship will be good enough for me.......Fuck the Prem.

We have tried buying players of so called championship quality for the last few years and we are still in League. Get promoted then get the players you need to improve

groundsmen are doing a fabulous job, they should definitely continue to cut it if we get to the Championship.

I don't think I am, and I'm not trying to be, but the 2nd division is much, much better than when we were last there. The gap between the two is considerable.

I like this team a lot, but serious questions need to be asked of their ability to make us competitive in the next division, as much as we love them now. Too much sentiment will put us back in the same place we strived to get out of for 6 years.
100% agree with that but I think a lot of them are better than you're giving them credit for. No side goes up, buys 9 new first teamers and does well. Wigan have ripped up their title winning side and have ended up struggling more than Burton and Barnsley who have largely kept the same team.

The step up to PROMOTION is huge, but the step up to consolidate isn't that big. There's a much much bigger gap between the top few in the championship and the bottom 6 than there is between league one and the champ.

If we want to go up and consolidate first season we can't rip up the team - it'd be suicide.
Moore, Fleck, EEL, JOC, Coutts, Fleck, Duffy, Sharp - are all good enough for consolidation in that division as long as they have a sprinkling of championship quality with them. That's the key.
I'd keep Freeman, Wright and Basham too as they wouldn't let us down.

I don't want us to go up and be blindly sentimental and end up back in league one but you have to strike a balance, you need 2 quality players in each position so if we do sign championship quality there we have nothing to worry about.

Preston are the example to follow if we go up.

They've kept much of their team, have a decent manager, have carried on doing the things that got them promoted and gradually strengthened their squad without spending big money.

They also helped themselves by signing a Championship quality player like Daniel Johnson when they were still in L1, we should be looking to do similar in January.

Dont see whats wrong with talking about the matches at Christmas or new year or next season, take one game at a time? Its part of being a fan Sean surely isn't it? When your in the pub or anywhere else you are talking about your team and when things are going reasonably well why not talk about the future to some extent? And no I've not been fuckin hibernating, just that bash the owner's all the time gets a bit boring, I have done it myself enough times but at the moment they are keeping a low profile and the team is doing ok, let me enjoy it Sean.

Do we have to look much further than J37 to see what a team promoted with serious momentum can achieve? I mean to say that there's a difference in the way Barnsley and Burton were promoted, with Burton grinding it out and Barnsley riding the crest of a wave. Our team looks far more akin to the unit that thrilled Oakwell for the 2nd half of last season than the one that made the seats all squeaky at the Pirelli.

Starting XI (Keeping with the 3-5-2)
Moore
EEL
JOC
Fleck
Duffy
Sharp

Squad players
Freeman
Wright
Coutts
Bash
Lavery
Ramsdale

Needed Signings
CB - Maguire? (I think hes out of contract in the summer)
RWB - Byrne
LWB - ?
CM - Coady?
ST - Preferably someone with a bit of pace. Maybe a Done that can score.

Exactly. Nixon says we're looking at a midfielder too which is interesting.
I don't think Scougall could make the step up, so we could sign someone to compete with Duffy longer term. Bradley Dack would be nice now his stock seems to have fell a bit, he's got the ability to step up.

The problem with these threads isn't that we're getting ahead of ourselves. It's that it soon turns from who's good enough to who isn't and becomes another thread about our 'shit' players.

What I know from previous promotions is that some players you think will step up don't and some you think will fail, succeed.

What did Nixon say exactly? I expect us to be in for a midfielder, just not sure what type. I think the Emyr Huws link is pretty strong so he might be the one.

Another option to compete with Duffy could be Ben Reeves at MK Dons. Seems that he's out of contract in 6 months. Graham Carey too.

Is that the Coutts who pulls all the strings in our midfield and is dominating games as a matter of routine? He's a class above.
