Yep.

There was much call for Billy Sharpe to be given a go long before Colin put him in the first team (and a certain Keith Edwards many years ago).
If someone scores goals then they are brought to the attention and people want to see if they can transfer the skill at the highest level.

I'm too young to recall Edwards, but I don't think there was anywhere near as much excitement about Billy coming through. In fact, I think the first time he was anyone's radar was when he scored goals for Rushden.

Anyway, people liked the Billy Sharp name because it alluded to the 'Blades'.

Clive Mendonca scored lots of goals in the mid 80's for the juniors and had a similar hype. Mind you, his name sounds a bit exotic as well (the "Mendonca", not the "Clive").
 
VERY exotic. Especially in a mid 80s South Yorkshire...
 
Bruno Ribeiro was the worst ,he had his name chanted all the time and he was beyond useless. Uhlenbeek too.
 
Mendonca was very keenly awaited as he had scored freely when we won the Northern Intermediate League in 1986 and had continued in the same vein a year later, with the highlight being him scoring 4 in a 5-1 win for the reserves over Wednesday reserves. He got a couple of sub appearances at the end of 1986-7 - United struggled for goals for much of that season and I was puzzled why McEwan didn't bring him up earlier.

His header to beat Hull in October 1987 in his first appearance of the season was one of the few highlights that year.

Sharp was a big enough deal for there to be a good deal of disappointment when he was sold for the first time.

He's a 17 year old skillful player from Chesterfield.

He must have something about him to have played for Italy u/18's however
 
Who was the kid we had on loan from Juventes(?) a few years ago - during the Warnock era, I think?

Like De Girolamo, he was class on Champ Manager and had played for Italy U18's.

I think you're thinking of Arturo Lupoli who was on loan from Fiorentina in 2009. He made his debut and scored against Wednesday on 7/2/09. Of course we lost that 2-1 and it was downhill from there. He only got one more goal and off he went at the end of the season. He now plays for Grosseto in the Italian Second Division.

On 30 January 2008 Inter reached a loan agreement with Middlesbrough which fell through after he failed a medical and would be unlikely to challenge for a first team place.[2] The next day Inter announced to have loaned Slavkovski toSheffield United.[3][4] On 18 March 2008, Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell claimed that he was still not ready to play in the first team stating that he would play in the reserve team where he could be assessed.[5] Slavkovski returned to Italy at the end of the season without having made a first team appearance for the Blades.[6] He did, however, make six appearances for the reserve team, scoring twice.

On 27 June 2008, Slavkovski confirmed a 5-year deal with Hajduk Split. It was subsequently confirmed that he is in a very weak physical condition as a result of unsporting behavior and that it would have taken weeks for him to regain fitness.[7] The announced transfer was later cancelled due to his condition, and Slavovski remained contracted with Inter. On October 2008, he started training with Malmö FF, confirming he was still an Inter player and announcing that he will stay on in Sweden for the remainder of the year.[8][9] His contract with Inter expired on June 2009, and was not extended; since then, he allegedly rejected a number of offers from Serie B and Lega Pro Prima Divisione clubs.[10] On 22 January 2010, it was announced that VfL Bochum II had signed Slavkovski. The Macedonian and former Inter Milan forward signed a six-month contract with the option to renew the contract. Slavkovski also had a trial with Barnet.[11] He was however released by the end of the season, after failing to play a single game for the club's first team. An interesting comment on Wikipedia about Slavkoski's condition shortly after he left us:-

"It was subsequently confirmed that he is in a very weak physical condition as a result of unsporting behavior and that it would have taken weeks for him to regain fitness"

What "unsporting behaviour" do we suspect caused his weak condition?
A professional foul? Removing his shirt? Or booze and drugs?

Vincent Pericard? He really did play for Juventus (against Arsenal in the Champions League). 10 years later he was playing for Havant & Waterlooville!
