Would you consider him as a club legend?

  • Yes of course, took us from League 1 to 9th in the Prem, bouncing day massacre and derby double etc

  • No, he walked out on us when we was in the dumps, wasted millions of pounds on crap signings etc

  • Not sure

I'm not sure how to answer that!!

Every fanbase has it's weirdos and idiots. But I'm not sure any manager has ever had the level of support Wilder has had over his 2 spells.

I just don't agree that United fans are any better or worse than others as a general rule when it comes to being fickle front runners who,as a group turn quicker that milk left out in Cairo

He's objectively a tier one club legend. Ironically that's why a few hundred malcontents in our own fan base despise him and, in truth, only ever begrudgingly gave him any credit for anything. If his name was Christophe Wilderinho the same people would be licking his ring piece. It's a funny old world...

What Wilder has inadvertently succeeded in doing is exposing the United fan base. It's unfortunately not really what it was built up to be by my predecessors. It's as entitled, deluded and changeable as any other and more than most. That's been a sad revelation (to me at least). I saw it a bit towards the end of Warnock's tenure (and before the promotion) , was told how it turned towards the back end of Basset, but it has been a stark reality since results started to go south in the second Prem season. Really surprising and disappointing. The nature of a lot of it has been disgusting and disrespectful. Wilder's biggest mistake was taking the job the second time having to endure it a
Imo

Our fan base ,like SWFC , is one of the best in football . We have never been and will never be - entitled ?

We have won f all for almost ever . We have seen failure after failure with the odd potential shooting star to re ignite the hope - it’s the hope that kills you .

I’m proud of my club and city , I’m proud of our supporters and whilst Weds may be deluded , they are our deluded .

CW has been fantastic for us - fact - he has galvanised a fkn shit show and given us our club and identity back . Sure, it may be time to move on , I don’t know , but he has my respect and our club , our city’s , supporters are first class work nowt to cling on

It's hard to judge. Are you talking about Wilder mark 1 who took us from League One to the Premier League and kept us up (stop exactly there)?

Or are we including the following season where he recruited badly, walked out on us when the Prince told him he could stay even if we were relegated, returned in a relegation fight and changed nothing, then missed out on promotion somehow having been outplayed and outclassed by 90% of teams all season where he couldn't get a consistent tune out of his team all season, stubbornly stuck to the same tactics and same playersz put square pegs in round holes, stuck with Captain Robbi, recruited poorly in January and didn't replace Souttar, had a public wobbly slagging off his own fans, squaring up with opposing players who were rightfully celebrating beating us on their own pitch and giving themselves a chance to stay up in a week where he threw away promotion, getting videoed pissed in a pub singing songs about an opposing manager, and losing the play off final through negative tactics and substitutions, trying to defend a 1-0 lead as per usual.

If we're talking just Mk 1 Wilder. Yes, legend, no doubt.

Overall, I'm not so sure as he's a shadow of his former self both on and off the pitch and last season somewhat stained his overall legacy.
Again bang on mate, but the bladey blades will shortly be on your case+ he's one of our own gang as well! And don't even repeat this on FB the idiots on there will slag you off! And probably tell you..." well if you don't want Wilder fck off to Hillsborough 😊"

Not sure it's quite this black and white.

He took us from the depths of shite to daring to dream of European football in the space of 4 seasons which is unlikely to be matched any time soon by anyone, never mind just us so is one to be extremely proud of.

If, hypothetically, Wilder had then been offered a job by an Everton, Palace, Villa, West Ham, he'd have gone down in history as one of our very best and he'd have gone with our best wishes.

But of course, that wasn't the case. He made a right royal bollocks of it in the second season, signing a load of garbage and snuck out the "back door", pointing the finger everywhere else except for himself.

On his return, I think there was justified resentment on account of these actions, whereas others could see past it for his past achievements with us, despite not being able to do the same anywhere else in between.

When he returned, nobody else was going to take the job on and Wilder had failed at Boro and Watford and both parties needed some sort of familiarity to see us through the storm.

My belief now though is that Chris Wilder needs Sheffield United more than we need him. We're the only club in the top 2 divisions where he's had any real success, whereas the other real top name managers do it either at the same club for a long period or can do it at multiple clubs, multiple times. He did that in the lower leagues but it's a different game when it comes to the Premier League.

Wilder could have been our Alex Ferguson but he's shot himself in the foot more than once in my view.

If he stays, fine. If he goes, that's fine, too.

I told a blade my view about wilder and got offered out. Bloke were in his 60s’. Embarrassing

A lot of people say Wilders managerial record at Boro and Watford was a failure but he was in charge for ;

Boro 45 games (40% win rate)
Watford 11 games (27% win rate)

Probably one of the drugged up piss heads what attend the away matches, I've come across them myself, it's making me wonder should I bother going! Got my season ticket for next season, but I might think fuck it! I'm in my 70s and don't need it.

I just laughed at him. Told him to act his age, not his shoe size.

Good post and I agree completely. Sad to admit it but our fans aren't among the best in football. Some of us will turn on players or staff in the blink of an eye, and the personal insults can be vile. It doesn't really matter if the player or manager is giving 100%. There's a nasty herd instinct that makes a section of our support abuse club staff and players on the pitch or in the street until they are hounded out.

I've seen it plenty over the years - the way that fans turned on genuine, decent employeers who generally did well and had a lot of love for the club, people like Basset and Porterfield. Most managers in my lifetime have given it their all and eventually become the subject of very nasty personal abuse - Warnock, Adams and Blackwell especially but every manager has got it to an extent. It's enough to put you off getting too emotionally involved.

I'll still watch the games but am inclined not to read the Blades sections on this forum. There's very little praise and far too much criticism. If Wilder leaves I feel sorry for his replacement. The honeymoon period will be brief, and if we're not in the top two by November the knives will definitely be out.

It seems to me that we're all really plunging into the unknown here. We all wanted the tekovver, now here we are with some Hollywood directors and the like on our board, falling out with wilder, and using ai to home in on 2 Nigerians at the same Bulgarian club. Wierd.

I have some sympathy with the new modern manager brigade mind, I get the desire to move away from the bladey bladeyness.

Glad it's not me who uas to decide whether to stick or twist.

Personally

I'd stick. But I'm an employee. What do I know

It’s time for a change but that ride from league one to the prem was unbelievable. So many good memories, the best time in my years of supporting the Blades without a shadow of a doubt. So yes, legend for me…Chrissy Wilder and Alan Knill 🎵

Highlights for me:

* The diving celebration with Fleck after his goal against Coventry.

* The coach getting back to Lane after league one promotion and him starting the chants off at the front of the coach.

* His league one interview at the town hall “I get my haircut down there”

* Celebrations in the hotel after bouncing day.
Did you see his interview as Northampton manager just before joining us, talking about how their board should be accepting a takeover offer on the table? Genuine, honest, heart on sleeve stuff, I wanted him at the Lane as soon as I saw it

Not to mention that Watford job is a poisoned chalice for managers, must have had something like 12 managers in the last 10 years.

The first Wilder era upto Covid was the best in my lifetime and I’ll be forever be greatful for that - it was astonishing!

However he should never have come back due to the manner he left us, it was complete betrayal.

This season has all be about missed opportunities, poor decision making and wasted money…. as much as I respect his first spell, he’s fallen in to the trap of being an older manager now who just can’t accept his failings and is so so set in his ways now is the time to part ways, we need to move on now from the last era and make fresh memories, given the right finance and strategy we are primed for success… BUT NOT WITH WILDER

Wilder hasn’t gone yet. Is this just a media story. If so shows how much we are easily controlled.
Personally wasn’t happy with the Wilder left us, especially with a golden handshake. On the other side he did not have the financial backup that is specially needed for the Premiership.
The Wembley curse and two polnt deduction and the problems with ownership were all factors that influenced last season.
All the top three teams had sticky moments last season. Ours just came at the wrong time.
Wilder has been the most successful manager in my time as a supporter for over 60 years. So he will be seen as one of the greatest.
They say success breeds success, under Wilders stewardship we have had many highs, as well as the lows.
Of course even Man City for all their money hit a bad patch this season. We’ve never had that money, so thing many clubs and fans envy us. Come on various trips to Wembley, even if not successfully, many clubs and fans would love to be in our shoes.
We should celebrate those moments. It says something about our great club as a whole including us

I've been told the board wanted to pick the team for the play off final by AI. I'm sure this weirdness doesn't happen elsewhere.

And it appears you’ll believe anything as long as it supports your view that Widler walks on water. Board could have done a better job than Widler then. Any views on whether the earth is flat?

In modern times

Harris
Bassett
Warnock
Wilder

All deserve their place as worthy of note and praise. 'Legend' is a subjective term

I’d put Wilder before Warnock. Wilder came in and saved the club. He deserves to be called a legend because of that. Subsequent events don’t change that for me.

If he’s not a legend then what do you have to do 😂 some unitedites take for granted massively where we are right now. Before he took us over we were in league 1 and the only way felt like it was down.

Make no mistake, Wilder and Knill single-handedly got this club out of the shit. Not the prince, not the fans, not the players, those 2. They dragged the entire club from the worst place in decades to the best place in decades.

Wilder’s got a flaw, however. Big money signings. He can’t do them in the slightest. Wilder’s next step has to be the acknowledgment of this and to accept a director of football. He should however be allowed to bring in low risk, low fee players as there aren’t many better in football than him at that style recruitment. The Cannon signing, I expect, is probably giving him a few sleepless nights this summer. That money gets spent on Darling and Dunne and we’re up already.

This squad needs another season in the championship though. Burrows, Seriki, Peck, Arblaster, O’Hare, Campbell, Brooks do not need a season of getting ripped to shreds when they can have a season developing and winning football matches. There’s no one better in football to help that crop of players than wilder.
